Yep, 1150 is still on the 93.5 translator. Really the only reason to keep 1150 on the air at all. I suspect that Bustos will try and extend the STA as long as possible before actually turning on the 250 watt operation. As of last week the ten watts off of their building wasn’t on the air…it’s all about the translator.

Bustos applied today to diplex 1150 on the KBPS tower with 250 watts day and 12 watts night…and to extend their 10watt STA AGAIN. Current STA set to expire 2/17.

Digging a little deeper into this transaction, the 11 acre transmitter site and towers are retained by Don McCoun under McCoun Tower LLC. There is a relocation clause that compels the buyer to relocate the station when directed by McCoun Tower LLC…basically as soon as there is a buyer for the property they will need to relocate. Not a three year term, only agreed to lower rent for the first three years.

Flying Ant LLC, the buyer, is somehow connected to XRAY-FM as all communications on this matter are to be sent to Amanda Brockman (currently listed as the Director of Development at XRAY-FM) and the agreement was signed by Jefferson Smith, former member of the Oregon House of Representatives and also connected with XRAY-FM.

The former 1150 Studio & Transmitter building at the Fourth Plain site was demolished October 3rd thu the 6th. The demo crew stated it took twice as long as they thought it would take because the building was built so solid. (Mostly concrete construction)

The tower was taken down by crane today starting at 10:34a and on the ground in eight minutes. Buckled half way down the tower as the crane started to lay it down. The tower occupied the site for 63 years.

The developer is going to make end tables out of parts of the tower to be used around the pool area of the apartments that are going to be built on the site.

The Tower removal has been delayed again due to poor weather conditions. Now likely the end of June early July.

I may have spoken too soon, Bustos has filed an engineering STA:

KGDD’S TRANSMITTER SITE USE AGREEMENT HAS BEEN TERMINATED. IN ORDER TO KEEP THE STATION ON THE AIR UNTIL A NEW PERMANENT TRANSMITTER SITE CAN BE OBTAINED AND AN FCC APPLICATION GRANTED TO PERMIT USE OF SAID NEW SITE, THE LICENSEE HAS OBTAINED ‘TRAVELER’S INFORMATION STATION’ EQUIPMENT WHICH WILL BE OPERATED FROM ATOP THE ROOF OF THE HEADQUARTERS OF BUSTOS MEDIA HOLDINGS, LLC AT 5110 SE STARK STREET, PORTLAND, OREGON 97215.

THE PUBLIC INTEREST, CONVENIENCE AND NECESSITY WILL BE WELL SERVED BY A GRANT OF THIS STA REQUEST, WHICH WILL ALLOW KGDD TO CONTINUE TO SERVE THE PUBLIC WHILE A PERMANENT SITE IS OBTAINED.

THE ROOF OF OUR BUILDING IS 23 FEET (7.0 METERS) ABOVE GROUND LEVEL. THE EQUIPMENT IS TO BE LOCATED ON A BASE OF 3 FEET ABOVE THE ROOF LEVEL (0.9 METERS), AND THE WHIP ANTENNA OF THE STATION IS 18 FEET (5.5 METERS) TALL. THE OVERALL HEIGHT OF THE TIP OF THE ANTENNA ABOVE THE GROUND IS 44 FEET (13.4 METERS).

THE NUMERICAL INFORMATION IN THIS REQUEST HAS BEEN PROVIDED TO US BY CONSULTING RADIO ENGINEER BENJAMIN DAWSON OF HATFIELD AND DAWSON, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, WHOSE QUALIFICATIONS ARE WELL KNOWN TO THE FCC.

I didn’t think you could move and operate at a new site, regardless of low power, without FCC approval. Maybe that’s what Semoochie heard? Or at least being tested?

Semoochie – 1150 KGDD Portland is NOT on the air in any form from any location. All transmitters have been removed from the Fourth Plain site. You’re catching skywave from a different station.

Well, it’s official the tower will be taken down by crane on June 15th, just short of the July 4th anniversary of the station signing on the air in 1954, if the weather holds. Unfortunately I won’t be able to witness, planned to capture it on video, but I will be in Seattle on business.

Sad to see it go, grew up at that site.

    RIP 1150

The developer is paying the cost difference between the drop and what Andy describes, it triples the cost of removing the tower.

The transmitting equipment was removed from the site on 5/24. the tower was scheduled to come down next Tuesday the May 30th, however due to delays in obtaining demo permits from the city of Vancouver the removal has been put off.

The Tower was originally going to be destructively dropped, however the property developer wishes to save the top section of the tower and lighting beacon to use as an architectural detail of the apartments that are going to be built. They like to preserve bits of history of the properties they develop. As a result it will be a much more complex removal of the tower.

Looks like the site has had a few weeks reprieve, the tower removal is delayed for at least a few weeks due to weather and tower crew schedules.

The 1150 site is a leased site, no money grab by Bustos in selling the land. They also talked about buying 1480 to diplex off of that site.

I suspect that they will file a silent STA due to losing their transmitter site, continue to operate 93.5 as they did for over a year when 1150 was silent due to vandalism.
