There’s also KPIJ 88.5 In Junction City. They cover Eugene fairly well. More curiously, they also cover Oakridge surprisingly well if KAVE 88.5 is down. Something isn’t right with KPIJ and it’s detrimental to KAVE.
I hope KKNX improves the audio quality on FM. Levels, tone etc vary wildly between music, voice, ads, etc.
The sign on KKNX’s office suite (visible from Delta Hwy) says “KKNX AM 840 HD”.
I give KKNX credit for building a large enough following on AM to sustain the station. Listening to KKNX is a little like entering a time warp. Their new 105.1 FM translator needs some technical work to improve the audio, and the signal is very weak (99 watts?). But it has possibilities.
Local radio isn’t dead yet.
I get a little perplexed when I read here that Reagan is responsible for killing radio. It reads more like he gave broadcasters what they insisted they needed to thrive. These corporations then made a long series of corporate decisions rooted in their own newly granted right to be smart, or greedy. Broadcasters chose greedy. They made all the wrong decisions and sealed the bloody fate of their own business.
Corporate radio is on life support. Fortunately listener-supported stations like KRVM have no board of directors in Atlanta to keep happy.
Oldies KKNX AM-840 (MIELKE BROADCASTING GROUP) is on the air at 105.1 FM now: K286CJ. Not sure exactly when this happened but it’s pretty recent.
I don’t think this is top secret
KZEL & KNRQ alumnus Stu Allen (currently at KFLY?) is the incoming PD at KRVM. Longtime KRVM PD Ken Martin, also formerly with KZEL, is retiring soon.
KRVM’s 2014 Labor Day themed music show included “Working Class Hero” by John Lennon. I figured oh surely the host has a sanitized version or a bleep button. But no, the first big f-bomb went out. The host clearly wasn’t expecting it, briefly dropped the fader for a couple seconds, then decided to keep going and brought the fader back up. After the second f-bomb he cut it off early with the comment “Sorry, that’s not radio friendly” and pushed on.
I’ve heard f-bomb-laced tracks played on the Soul City show including today.
Last week during Breakfast With The Blues some song extolled the act of pleasuring your woman with your tongue. That track also ended early without comment.
I’m not sure what was going on at KWAX. Apparently everyone was locked out of the studio, someone was running the music server remotely, they hired a new classical guy who moved to Eugene for the gig but studio was locked up when he arrived and he didn’t know if he had a job, Eugene police did welfare check at studio, found nobody there, UO had no answers. Then all of a sudden things returned to normal more or less.
KRVM-HD1 has added album name to their PSD and more timely reversion to the station slogan when no PSD is available. Station logo may be added soon for HD1 & HD2.
KWAX has resumed using basic RBDS. Has anyone discussed the recent goings on at KWAX? Front page writeup in the Register-Guard, no personnel onsite, station boarded up, police breaking in to studio to make a welfare check, new studio space leased but left empty.
Angry letters to editor of Register-Guard about KLCC program changes.
KRVM is displaying HD PSD artist/track data on HD1 now. Might have a couple bugs but it’s basically working during daytime AAA programming.
Track/Artist display is working now on KRVM-HD2.
KZEL is off the air again. They’ve had a constant series of transmitter problems going back several months.
The KVAL story on KRVM was terrible. Waste of 3 minutes.
I’m surprised to be getting a very solid lock on 97.9 KLVP-HD in Eugene.
KRVM will be a community radio-themed feature story on KVAL News at 5 & 11 on Monday 11/16.
Well I guess touchy-feely is in the ear of the listener. They’ve had tracks in rotation that are like suicidal in theme. I can’t quote artists or titles, just saying once in a while something they play during AAA hours doesn’t work at all for me.
I support KRVM with my $$ and I’ve helped fund some of their recent technical improvements. Like getting HD2 stabilized & sounding better. Also RBDS track & artist display. But I *never* suggest what they should or shouldn’t play during AAA hours. It’s not my personal playlist. 🙂
EDIT: I did point out to the PD one time that they had played the AM-single edit of a Steely Dan track. Haven’t heard it again since then. 🙂
