I think KGON switched it on in 2002.

IIRC, (so there is some doubt here) the HD system was approved by the FCC in 2002 and the first HD radio was sold in 2004. KGON turned on HD mid to late 2004.

There’s no doubt at all. I must have the date confused with something else, probably the approval date. According to the Ibiquity site, the first station to broadcast commercially was on January 7, 2003.

“According to the Ibiquity site, the first station to broadcast commercially was on January 7, 2003.”

I’m guessing that broadcast was perhaps set up for the 2003 Consumer Electronics show to demo the technology…no consumer radios yet!…Found the article about the “first radio sold”:

    http://www.aes.org/aeshc/docs/recording.technology.history/ibiquity.html

“iBiquity Digital and its partners will formally debut commercial HD Radio products during a media conference at the International Consumer Electronics Show to be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Booth #4619 in the Las Vegas Convention Center’s North Hall. HD Radio products and demonstrations will be available at the booth through the show’s conclusion on Sunday, January 11.”

Exactly one year between the first station and first receiver!

Found this info about KGON HD:

“2004 KGON (FM) granted S.T.A. (Special Temporary Authority) for H.D. operation with 1 kw power.”

    From the archive:
    http://archive.pdxradio.com/2009-14/topic/this-day-in-portland-radio-history-october-4/page/2#post-174993

But was this first turn-on or just a power boost to 1 KW?

Spotted this today on the HD Radio Website: http://www.dts.com/news/articles/2015/08/dts-and-ibiquity-digital-corp.aspxed

DTS is excited to announce it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire iBiquity Digital Corporation, the developer of digital HD Radio technology for AM/FM audio and data broadcasting for approximately $172 million.

It will be interesting to see if DTS finds the magic to grow the technology.
