    Barry Bennett Passes

Condolences to the family and friends of veteran NORTHWEST radio air talent and programmer BARRY BENNETT, who passed away in KALISPELL MT.

BENNETT started his career at BEE BROADCASTING in 1983 on KBBZ. He worked in MODESTO at KHOP under the name “CASANOVA” in the early 90s. From 2000-2008 he worked at KHTQ/SPOKANE, first as MD and later as PD. He used the on air moniker FNG — The Freakin New Guy and was known for his non stop and hilarious request line listener abuse.

Funeral services will be SATURDAY APRIL 13th at St Mathews in KALISPELL.

FCC Nixes Request For Waiver, Dismisses One Of Applicant’s Two Overlapping FM Translator Applications

The FCC has dismissed one of two applications for FM translators filed by SAM-SNO EDUCATIONAL MEDIA in the Auction 83 filing window.

The applicant had requested a waiver of the rule prohibiting contour overlap between two translator applications filed by the same licensee in the same market, contending that the overlap was de minimis (1.4 square kilometers and 761 people). However, the Commission rejected the waiver request, dismissed SAM-SNO’s application for a translator at MCCLEARY, WA, and will continue to process the application for a translator at NORTH OLYMPIA, WA.

    FCC Upholds 2007 Sale

The FCC has denied an application by RADIO PALOUSE, INC. for review of the 2007 grant of the sale by PALOUSE COUNTRY, INC. of Country KZZL/PULLMAN, WA and Hot AC KRAO (myRADIO 102.5), Country KCLX-A, and Talk KMAX-A/COLFAX, WA to INLAND NORTHWEST BROADCASTING, LLC. The appeal was based on the use of contour-overlap analysis to determine multiple ownership status, which RADIO PALOUSE contended should not have been used in the specific market, saying that the Commission should have defined the market as stations licensed to three specific communities.

    KZIU-HD2 Flips For HANK FM

ENVISION RADIO NETWORKS and KROEGER MEDIA, INC. are gotten syndicated Country Hits HANK FM on KZIU-HD2/WALLA WALLA, WA. Similar to its Adult Hits cousin BOB FM, HANK FM mixes over 1,000 titles spanning from the ’80s through the ’00s and today.

There are three distinct HANK flavors — HANK Plays Everything Country, HANK Classic Hit Country, and HANK Plays New Country — as well as different levels of programming packages available for both cash and barter.

All Access almost got it right. New Zoo 102 KZIU is licensed to Weston OR with translators in Walla2, College Place, Malaga, and Richland WA. They are putting the HD2 into the Walla2 translator- a translator they certainly didn’t need to provide city grade signal there. Seems to be a lot of that lately-using the HD2 to program a translator.

BTW, the mother station was the old KUJJ, which until last Christmas was still flying the flag of Smooth Jazz…a fairly niche choice given where they are.

In a story like this which is almost a promotion, the radio station will use their target city as where they are. Just as KRSK Molalla would say Portland.
