    “1966 KRDR 1230 kHz., denied permit to move its transmitter site to Troutdale Airport, by Multnomah County.” Would that have covered Portland better than their previous location just south of Powell on Hogan Rd?

    JULY 29TH. TODAY IN PORTLAND RADIO HISTORY

    1905 Les Halpin was born in Kaslo, B.C., Canada. KOIN News Director, 1940-67. Began at KOIN in 1935.

    1913 Lou Gillette was born in Fairbanks, AK. KMCM Station Manager, 1949-53. KALE/KPOJ AM/FM, 1946-49.

    1953 First Portland area Radio test of Conelrad from 1:00 A.M. to 2:00 A.M. 5 stations broadcast on 640 K.C. & 5 on 1240 K.C.

    1956 KPOJ AM/FM inaugurated the first mobile studio on the West Coast during a Rita Moreno autograph party.

    1979 KMJK 106.7 MHz formatted, Mellow Rock “The Magic FM” changed to Top 40 as “The All New Magic 107.”

    2011 “Mel Blanc Day” proclaimed in Portland, honoring former KGW-KEX Star. Three month celebration.

    2011 KXPD 1040 kHz., Tigard signed back on the air with programming from China via “Easy FM” in English.

    JULY 30TH. TODAY IN PORTLAND RADIO HISTORY

    1937 KXL began carrying and contributing to programming of the company’s new “Northwest Network.”

    1947 KPDQ signed on the air on 800 K.C. with 1 K.W. daytime from the old KWJJ transmitter site at Oaks Park.

    1956 KGON 1230 K.C. with 250 watts, switched frequency to 1520 K.C. & increased power to 10 K.W., two tower directional.

    JULY 31ST. TODAY IN PORTLAND RADIO HISTORY

    1892 Herbert W. Armstrong was born in Des Moines, IA. KWJJ host of “Radio Church of God” 1937-42. KXL 1943.

    1946 KWJJ purchased property at 4636 S.W. Council Crest Drive for the future KPRA(FM)/KWJJ-FM transmitter.

    1975 Harry H. Buckendahl died at age 72 in Portland. KOIN AM/FM Vice-President & G.M., 1944-52 & 1960-68.

    1987 1260 Radio, Inc. (Deane Johnson) sold KCYX to Matrix Media, Inc. for $681,812. (Michael Symons).

    1998 KNRK’s “Big Stink 3” Estacada Timber Bowl concert: Green Day, Blink 182, Semisonic, Gravity Kills, etc.

    2006 KLVP “K-Love” changed call letters to KXPD, standing for: La X PortlanD, switching to Regional Mexican.

    2006 KPAM 860 kHz., & KKAD 1550 kHz., moved studios from “Pioneer Tower” to “The Pamplin Media Center.”
