    JANUARY 29TH. TODAY IN PORTLAND RADIO HISTORY

    1923 KGW debuted the “Hoot Owls” variety show. First on the program Charles F. Berg. 11:00 P.M. to midnight.

    1928 Kenneth “Ken” Ford was born in Chehalis, Wash. KVAN 1480 kHz., Air Personality in the late 1960’s.

    1950 KPOJ AM/FM feeder line failure to Mt. Scott caused the stations to be off the air Sunday evening.

    2000 Rosie O’Donnell began “Federal Court” lawsuit against “Rosie 105” for use of her trademarked first name.

    2006 KPDQ-FM 93.7 MHz., switched frequency to 93.9 MHz., and reduced power from 100 K.W. to 50 K.W.

    2006 KPDQ 800 kHz., SRN talk shows moved to KTRO. KPDQ format mostly changed to ministry-based talk.

    2006 KTRO 93.1 MHz., Gladstone signed on the air with 1.6 K.W. Studios at: “224 Corporate Center.”

    2012 KKSN 910 kHz., 4 towers at 4617 N.E. 158th Ave. were brought down and demolished. Were erected in 1966.

    1918 Robert C. Zimmerman was born in Iloito, The Philippines. KGW Choral Director, 1945-47.

    1989 KYTE-FM “Classical 101” switched to New Age Adult Contemporary, as “The Sound of The City.”

    2014 Nora Lou Martin died at age 92 in Beaverton. KEX & NBC Blue Network show “Grandpappy & His Pals”, 1941-42.

    JANUARY 31ST. TODAY IN PORTLAND RADIO HISTORY

    1935 KGW debuted the drama series “Rented Happiness” at 9:45 A.M. Janet Baumhover played the lead.

    1937 KOIN dropped the “Don Lee Broadcasting System.” KALE picked up Don Lee seven months later.

    1943 Victor Rangner, 40, died in the KXL Orpheum lobby just before hosting “The Scandinavian Hour.”

    1950 KGW-FM 100.3 was shut down to make KGW more attractive to buyers. KGW-FM would return in 1952.

    1951 KVAN 910 lost its PBS affiliation at 7:00 P.M. Progressive Broadcasting System suspended operation.

    1975 FCC denied the five “Star Stations” licenses, KOIL & KEFM Omaha, WIFE AM-FM Indianapolis & KISN.

    1980 Sammy Taylor died at age 64 in Lake Oswego. KWJJ Program Director, 1965-77 & Music Director, 1965-74.

    1999 Thomas J. “Tom” Swafford died at age 78 in Asheville, N.C. KALE/KPOJ Program Director, 1947-50.

    2000 KXL 750 launched “Radio Northwest Network to nine affiliates carrying “The Lars Larson Show.”

    2006 KKSL 1290 kHz, Lake Oswego was shut down forever. 1640 kHz KDZR carried on the tradition.

    2010 Barbara Angell died at age 89 in Lacey, Wash. KWJJ host, 1960. KPDQ host, 1957. KPTV host, 1953-57.
