I find Mexico’s new fascination with virtual Ch. 1 to be interesting because it’s used so rarely north of the border. The listings on RabbitEars, near as I can tell, list only two such stations in the US. One is an LPTV in IL along the mighty Miss, sending religious programming into St. Louis, MO. The other is that multilingual station in San Jose, CA, that I talked about on another thread awhile back. A lot of broadcasters here will be watching to see the public acceptance of Ch. 1’s coming from Mexico in markets like San Diego, El Paso, and Brownsville/Harlingen. And what about virtual channels above 68 up into the 70’s, 80’s and up to 99? And Canada hasn’t used virtual Ch. 1 yet that I’ve heard of.

The branding ‘Channel One’ has long (1989) been a digital content provider. The daily news program has been accompanied by commercial advertising for marketing in schools, with supplementary educational resources. It was founded by Christopher Whittle, an advertising and marketing executive based in Knoxville, Tennessee. On May 13, 2014, it was sold for an undisclosed price to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

It would be difficult to build a new service with a shared branding so that’s my guess why no one else has run with it in the U.S.

Interesting that translators will have no protection. Does this mean, below 30 or anything above channel 30? We only have 1 translator above 30, KOIN on 34. The others are 17, 21, 23, & 26. So hopefully KOIN can move down in frequency. There are some open, 27, 25, 24, 22, 20, 19, 18, 16, 15, or 14. I don’t know how hard it is to change frequencies with a translator, but I presume it can be done.

Stage 3 of the forward auction ends this week.

I in the meantime here is a report by Free Press where they took a survey of public TV stations to see if they were participating in the auction or not.

The good news is all of Public TV stations in the Northwest aren’t selling.
