With KINK moving first to the Pacwest Center, thought this would be a good time to review the history of Portland Radio’s most enduring studio locations. Below on the far left are compiled years at one location. You might notice some call letters missing from locations. The calls not listed are stations that moved to the location later and therefore are not listed since they have a shorter span of time or less than 10 years.

Great post Craig! Interesting note about KBPS. Although the station was in the main Benson High School building from 1923-1992 it was in at least three and possibly four locations in the building during those years. The longest running studios were in the area above the auditorium. We were there from at least the early 1950’s until the ’92 move to the building on the back of the campus facing 15th.

Great post! I had no idea about the longevity of many of these studio locations! (or even the actual location of many of them)

    How about an alternate wording:

    “87 KBPS – Benson Polytechnic School Campus – 1923-Current” ? 🙂

How about elsewhere in the state. I know that KIHR in Hood River is still located in the same building on 22nd Street as when it began in 1950.

So 60 years, longer than anything in Portland but KBPS.

And KODL The Dalles was located on Scenic Drive from 1940 to 2000, another 60 years.

I’m sure there are others in Oregon still longer…

“How about elsewhere in the state.”

Those would be posted on HoodRiverRadio.com and TheDallesRadio.com! 😀

Interesting thread. What are the old KGW studios on Jefferson today?

A friend took me up to Council Crest in the early 80’s, (I think KCNR at the time), and told me the whole building was spooked. Details?

Thanks Guys! It took about 8 hours of research. Most of the information was culled from radio histories researched years ago. What wasn’t written down was pulled from Portland Telephone book listings from 1946 to current.

“How about elsewhere in the state.”

Seguedad: It would be very difficult to present correctly since I haven’t researched stations as thoroughly across the state, plus I don’t have those telephone books to rely on. There might be enough information to present Salem stations which I’ll work on tonight and present.

Research was done for the McMinnville station but information was held because the station is so far removed from the Portland market. I believe smaller market stations might have a leg up on studio longevity since so many have their studios & transmitter in one location. Here’s the McMinnville example:

    44 KLYC/KCYX/KMCM – 2163 Lafayette Ave. (McMinnville) – 1949-93.

“What are the old KGW studios on Jefferson today?”

Paul: I’m not sure I understand your question. I believe the answer is sales offices.

My question was simply, what exists where the classic KGW 60’s-70’s studios used to be? I know up at KING-AM, the cozy studios were converted to KING-FM with the major re-do of the complex in ’81, but have no idea what exists in that space now. Just wondering about KGW.

I believe it was KINK sales offices in the original KGW space but that all changed last week.

If you’re talking about the entire building, it’s still KGW(TV).

Couldn’t pull together the Salem station addresses. Was hoping the Broadcasting Yearbook’s would list yearly address but Salem stations opted for P.O. Box listings. That’s the problem with most small markets in the Yearbooks, as well as “The Oregon Blue Book” listings back to 1951. I was able to verify one station since I have more information on it. If only I had Salem Telephone book listings, I could pull this off:

    46 KSLM – 520 West Hills Way N.W. (Salem) – 1949-95 – “Kingwood Heights”

    Great thread!

How about 105.1 KRSK and 97.1 KYCH/KKSN-FM? I’m trying to remember when they moved into the Bancroft Building.

I believe perhaps KGON/KYMN/KYXI should be listed here as well. But I may not have the rules down exactly.

Lets see.. the Johnson Rd site was built in 1962 and I believe the studios were built at that time for KGON AM , then a callsign change to KYMN then to KYXI in 1966? or 67 ? So collectively this AM station on 1520 was studioed on Johnson Rd from 1962 to 1988 ??

Seems like it would be so.

    And Paul,

I used to go up to that old studio bldg on Council Crest either with Mike Cooley or working for him in the early and mid 70s. Yes, it is a creepy building , or was ..It was all wooden , multiple levels , dark and forboding with lots of history. It is widely known now that high EMR , Electromagnetic radiation fields can cause , in some people , feelings of nervousness even mild paranoia or neuroligical skin sensations.

    From Craig’s list above:

    “26 KSGO/KYXI/KYMN/KGON(AM) – 15201 S.E. Johnson Rd. (Clackamas) – 1962-88.”
