Entercom Call Letter Shuffle: KSWD To Seattle’s New ‘Sound,’ KMPS To High Desert Sports AM

ENTERCOM has parked the heritage Country KMPS call letters, until recently on 94.1 FM in SEATTLE, on what has lately been Sports KRAK-A (CBS SPORTS RADIO 910)/HESPERIA-VICTORVILLE, CA. It has also changed the SEATTLE calls for what is now AC 94.1 THE SOUND to KSWD-F, the calls it used in LOS ANGELES for the former Classic Rock format of the same name, which was abandoned when the station was sold to EDUCATIONAL MEDIA FOUNDATION and flipped to Christian AC as KKLQ (K-LOVE).

SEATTLE’s version of THE SOUND debuted on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1st; it had been a Country station with KMPS calls since FEBRUARY 1st, 1978, but the calls and format there dated back to 1975 on the AM dial (now SALEM Business KKOL-A). As for KRAK, the calls went to the HIGH DESERT station in 2001 but are better remembered as the calls for the Country format on 1140 AM in SACRAMENTO for many years (that station is now Sports KHTK-A).

I just got word that long time Seattle radio broadcaster Jim French passed away (in December). Jim had a long running talk show on KIRO AM 710, worked at KVI AM 570 and started a great radio drama series called “Imagination Theatre”.

    More about Jim at, https://www.pugetsoundradio.com/2017/12/20/rip-jim-french-seattle-radio-personality-audio-drama-producer/

A behind the scenes video showing Jim at the KIRO radio microphone in 1990 is at,

Spririt Radio’s former Enumclaw translator K293AY (106.3) has just been bought by the Chehalis-based KACS-Network group. It now is relaying KACS as part of the growing religious radio network. MCH Enterprises had this one advertised for $20K recently but the final sales price is unavailable. (The facility would have made a nice cross-service AM-to-FM-xltr but apparently there were no takers for that use.

I pulled this from the Daily Digest “FM DIGITAL APPLICATIONS FOR EXPERIMENTAL PERMIT GRANTED
    ,
    SEATTLE
    P
    WA
    CLASSIC RADIO
    KING-FM 11755
    20200309AAR
    WA”

What in the world does this mean? It can’t be an experimental grant for a full digital signal because that would end the analog broadcast and KING-FM isn’t about to do that! What could possibly be experimental that has to do with the digital part of their signal? Any ideas?

Experimental period refers to midnight to 6 AM unless otherwise specified, at least it used to. It probably means they can implement the digital only mode overnight in order to make ACI measurements would be my guess (without seeing the application).

I suggest typing that APP number into FM Query and reading it.

This is the first I’ve heard of full digital operation on FM, even experimentally. I doubt if it will be used during my lifetime, if ever, which makes it even more surprising! I tried to find something on this but couldn’t and hadn’t thought of putting in the APP number. Thank you, Andy!

Or it could be asymmetrical HD sidebands, I believe that is still considered “experimental.”

I’m still getting nowhere. Maybe, you’ll have better luck.
