Report: Sale Of KPLU/Tacoma-Seattle Surprised Staff

A report in SEATTLE’s CROSSCUT.ORG on the sale of PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY News-Talk-Jazz KPLU/TACOMA to the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, announced last week and yet to be filed with the FCC, blindsided KPLU staffers, who CROSSCUT reporter DAVID KROMAN says did not know of the negotiations and plans to sell the station.

KROMAN notes parallels to a similar deal in COLORADO and the “belief among some at KPLU that, if given the opportunity, the station could have appealed to its listeners and perhaps hung onto its license.”

KROMAN reports that KPLU staff was notified of the deal only a half hour before outside media, but that the licensee had been trying to sell the station for over a dozen years. DONNA GIBBS, VP/Marketing and Communications at PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, told KROMAN that “We believe this is a natural union between two stations that for many years have shared a common mission and a common region,” and, in response to a CHANGE.ORG petition to block the deal, noted that a contract has been signed and “If KPLU wanted to have a community-sponsored license they could have brought a proposal to the university at any time over the past 49 years.”

The vote, before a packed house a the WESTIN HOTEL in SEATTLE, has no formal effect, since the board has only limited authority to advise, but council President STEPHEN TAN told the crowd that the panel will send a letter with its concerns to the school.

Seattle public television station KCTS-TV officials say it will merge with nonprofit news website Crosscut.

The deal, effective Wednesday, is part of the station’s strategy to focus on digital and providing content across web, mobile and broadcast platforms.

Yeah, all nice and fluffy but if PLU wants to sell and you don’t want UW to buy them who do you propose will step up with a better offer? An intern? probably not happening.

I was listening to 102.9 now-fm heading from Seattle to Portland. I heard from 106.1 kiss-fm announcers, bender and molly that on January 19th at 12 noon will change their formats and telling listeners to move to 106.1. What format will 102.9 kynw will be?

Well, country didn’t really work. And they ran a simulcast with the AM sports radio KJR for several years. I think if there is one gaping hole in the “south sound” market, it is Classic Rock. I don’t know if that is a money target much any more, but from a format fit, it would work.

How does that work? Do you get a job at a small market airport, work your way through a medium market and up into LA or New York?
