The mayors of American cities large and small reacted with outrage on Wednesday as President Trump signed an executive order saying he would halt funding to municipalities that did not cooperate with federal immigration officials.

“The rhetoric doesn’t match the legal authority,” said Peter L. Markowitz, the director of the Immigration Justice Clinic at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York. “In fact, the president has very limited power to exercise any kind of significant defunding.”

“We’re going to defend all of our people regardless of where they come from, regardless of their immigration status,” Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York said at a news conference with other city officials.

In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared: “I want to be clear: We’re going to stay a sanctuary city. There is no stranger among us. Whether you’re from Poland or Pakistan, whether you’re from Ireland or India or Israel and whether you’re from Mexico or Moldova, where my grandfather came from, you are welcome in Chicago as you pursue the American dream.”

Mr. Trump’s order targeted what are known as sanctuary cities and counties, which generally do not comply with federal requests to detain undocumented immigrants who have been arrested on charges unrelated to their immigration status and turn them over to the federal authorities for possible deportation. Mr. Trump’s order said that jurisdictions that refused to comply “are not eligible to receive Federal grants, except as deemed necessary for law enforcement purposes.”

According to a 2012 Supreme Court decision, Mr. Markowitz said, Congress is not permitted to set conditions on spending to coerce states or localities to participate in a federal program against their will. Any conditions, at a minimum, must be directly related to the punitive action.

In other words, Mr. Markowitz said: “You can’t say ‘if you don’t use your police officers to go after unauthorized immigrants, you don’t get any money for your hospitals.’ They can’t impose conditions that are totally unrelated.”

    He’s a clueless bully.

The amount of chaos, and real damage, this buffoon is doing to our country in a short amount of time is utterly amazing.

Trump’s White House is, predictably, leaking like a sieve. It sounds like a great number of people around him are horrified by the thin skinned, petulant, shallow, child they’ve helped install into office.

Perhaps at some point they’ll put country above party and help us do something about it.

Enforcing the law is “chaos and damage,” but lawlessness is not?

This long-distance dedication goes out to Bacon in Denial, as he’s staying true to the one he loves, despite a reality-based world that just doesn’t understand.

Sometimes it’s hard to be conservative
giving all your love to just one man-child.
    You’ll have bad times
    And he’ll have good times,
Doin’ things that you don’t understand.
But if you love Trump you’ll forgive him,
even though he’s hard to understand.
And if you love him Oh be proud of him,
    ‘Cause after all he’s just a man-child.
    Stand By Your Man-Child,
Give him nuclear arms to cling to,
And some bizzare fixation to tweet
when nights are cold and lonely.
    Stand By Your Man-Child,
And tell the world you love him.
Giving all the love you can.
    Stand…By…You…Man-Child!

    (deepest apologies to Ms. Wynette)

Explain to me please why mayors violating immigration laws is a good thing, and why enforcing those laws (for the sake of reducing criminal activity) leads to “chaos and damage.”

It’s not the responsibility of state and local authorities to enforce immigration law – that responsibility belongs to the national government. Separation of powers, the 10th amendment…ever heard of them? States cannot obstruct the federal government from carrying out it’s powers, but they are also not obligated to assist. Trump wants them to assist.

Odd that you should use the phase “good faith” since yours is so destructive.

Golly! Sorry Bacon for not being more politically correct! I know that political correctness is important, and you are absolutely right! What we say and how we say it is vital to a civilized society! We should all think about how the words we use affects others!

    Cases in point:

“illegals” is offensive; “undocumented immigrants” is more accurate.

“Baby killer” is offensive; “Abortion rights activist” is more accurate.

    Thanks for the reminder!

Serious question f&b… if you somehow found out that some members of a Spanish speaking family that you attend church with were in the US “illegally”, would you turn them in to the feds?

Fuck bacon, he’s a boob and an ass (yes, I know that is to date biologically impossible).

Vern, you hypocritical bastard, if you don’t like it here, you can fucking leave and jack off over your keyboard posting at some other web forum.

And you know, your calls for decorum are no longer valid for two reasons:

    1. You (as ed has just pointed out) are guilty now and have been for so long when it comes to being outrageously offensive here to everybody at one time or another. You also refuse to answer direct questions no matter how “politely” or political “correctly” they are phrased . . . because you are defective both morally and intellectually. You have no standing here. None. Zero.

    2. Your president drumpf has lowered the bar as to how people treat people both on line and in person. This is the new order of conversation and you will just have to live with it. Don’t like it? Too fucking bad.

What I have enjoyed the most ace is how you came on so strong about being a Christian etc. and a born again Catholic but you have thrown that all out the window to support a rogue wannabe politician with an ego the size of Jupiter. And you can’t argue to the negative. You have thrown every decent part of Christianity to the dogs. Now you will experience a slow descent into the hell of drumpf’s bombast and lies. You deserve it. You are mentally incompetent and intellectually challenged. You belong in a hospital.
