ParticipantI was in Salem on labor day. Between approx. 3-30 and 4-00 I was in a favorable location and tuned them in. They were playing oldies, interspersed with fire updates. It’s good to know I wasn’t witnessing their last few hours.

ParticipantI thought an entity like a community TV station was not permitted to own a non-commercial radio frequency. Are they able to skirt around that with the partnership with the Spanish group?

ParticipantCCTV is the non-profit that runs the public access TV channels for Salem-area cable systems. When cities doled out cable franchises the bidders or communities would often propose a third-party to control the public access facility.. that way the content would be free of corporate pressures..

ParticipantKBZY (1490 AM) in Salem has been off the air for two days. But you can still hear the station on the internet using the Simple Radio app.

ParticipantOver a decade ago, Portland Community Media (formerly Portland Cable Access) announced in its newsletter that it was considering launching an LPFM station. These plans never came to fruition. I have been left curious whether the stumbling block was legal in nature or whether sufficient funds and manpower weren’t available.

ParticipantThe signal of KWBY sounds stronger… Did they finally upgrade or is just ground conductivity imporved thanks to the recent rains? (Bustos/Distell have one year remaining in that CP but an extension/re-filing would be easy.)

ParticipantI measured the signals of KWBY and KWIP on the Newport WebSDR. 940 was an S-unit higher than KWIP… Previously KWBY was much lower in signal strength there… Any confirmations as to 10kw?

ParticipantI am just outside the proposed 5mv/m contour, probably within four. I’ll check tomorrow. It should be fairly obvious!

ParticipantKWBY appears to be up and running with the 10KW and has filed the 302-AM. On the bedroom radio, it seems to be stronger than either 910 or 970!

ParticipantKWBY seems a bit stronger than 880, 920 and 990 here in Eugene, near sheldon plaza.

ParticipantKWBY is now fairly easy to receive in southwest Portland, so they definitely did increase power. I have not yet attempted to measure their signal strength relative to other local stations.

ParticipantI’ve noticed both today and yesterday that KWBY’s signal was much weaker after about 3-00 p.m. I wonder if they are under some kind of pre-sunset restriction?

ParticipantIt could just be responding to critical hours conditions. If they dropped to 200 watts, it would probably be covered up by Fresno, even at 3PM, assuming you could hear it at all.
