Biggest lesson from the 2016 election;
Do not underestimate the hypocrisy of Evangelical Christians.
There, so far, seems to be no limit as to how low they are willing to go in sacrificing their self-professed moral superiority.April 19, 2018 at 8:21 am #36272
Authoritarians will only reform when their authority is defeated.
Double, triple… down?
No problem.April 19, 2018 at 8:28 am #36274
And what could be more authoritarian than God?
Particularly God of the Old Testament.April 19, 2018 at 9:00 am #36275
Right?April 19, 2018 at 12:10 pm #36277
There is no racism in Islam.
So-called evangelicals (whatever that is) had no other choice. Evangelicals did not turn out for Romney in 2012, They got queer marriage, legal illegal drugs, race riots and socialism. Weren’t gonna happen ag’in.
For most folks, the choice is between The Don and Billary Clinton. They knew both candidate’s evil pasts and voted for the lesser of two evils.
Public education American history text books don’t teach classical history no more. Y’all probably don’t know it was evangelical (whatever that is) leaders and lay people who were the first non-traditional supporters of Dr. King and marched across the Murrow Bridge with him at Selma.April 19, 2018 at 12:50 pm #36281Andy BrownParticipant
“evangelical . . . people who were the first non-traditional supporters of Dr. King”
Yeah, and the Republicans were once liberal progressives who opposed the expansion of slavery, supported more money for public education, and advocated a more liberal immigration policy..
Things change. Evangelicals today are totally different. We parsed their history right here in this forum some years ago. T.V. evangelists changed the makeup of that group by setting horrible examples showcasing greed, deception and self abnegation when their treachery was exposed.
The lesser of the two evils? Hardly. Hillary was flawed but did not lose because she was the greater evil.
The U.S. has many problems. Right now, the biggest one is a president that is deeply flawed. The hypocrisy of evangelicals isn’t even in the top 5.
Big changes in 6 months. Until then, blather on but remember, if you think that there is no racism in Islaam, you are delusional. The long standing taboo about discussing matters of race in the Islamic world ended when modern journalism made its way into the Middle East.April 19, 2018 at 1:06 pm #36283
Hilary lost because she didn’t do the work to represent Americans properly.
She didn’t lose because Russians, mysogeny, or any other distraction.
She didn’t do the work. Told the left they were not needed.
People pretend to support candidates who pretend to represent them.
Had she even lifted a finger, she would be President today. Truth is, economics are a growing and severe problem. Not being Trump isn’t enough.
Won’t be going forward either. I’ve another post here about why that is.
What many do not realize is, “lesser evil” is highly subjective. Macro arguments do not get at the micro struggles those who are struggling need to see spoken to.
When we ask, “are you better off today?”, the context is nearly always in terms of, “could be worse, so shut up.”
That works, until it doesn’t, and today, “it could be worse” fails increasingly when “lesser evil” does not mean progress, or improvement, net gains.
I do not judge people for their votes anymore after what I’ve learned. It is time we focus on what will garner votes, not whatever super ugly deal might coerse people into voting for less pain and struggling. Increasing numbers of them just won’t do it.
They won’t do it, because what they need is a net reduction, a move toward a better future, not more of the sameApril 19, 2018 at 1:08 pm #36284
So-called evangelicals (whatever that is) had no other choice. Evangelicals did not turn out for Romney in 2012, They got queer marriage, legal illegal drugs, race riots and socialism.
Compromising their morality was the only choice they had if they wanted to use the Government, that they otherwise believe should stay out peoples lives, as a weapon against those they consider inferior to themselves.
In other words; Hypocrites.April 19, 2018 at 1:40 pm #36285
Big time. DominionismApril 19, 2018 at 2:16 pm #36288
Andy, nice try.
What the speculative wikipedia citation calls Moslem racism is, in fact, evangelism. Kill all infidels but spare the women and children. What the opinion piece calls anti-Iranian racism is most are Shia. What the article calls African racism is most are Christian. Commentary misses the mark. Submit to the Word of Allah or die.
“Modern journalism” is gob shite. Don’t get me started.
Amus. Your vision of what evangelical is is a cartoon.April 19, 2018 at 2:33 pm #36290
Your vision of what evangelical is is a cartoon.
Very fitting and accurate view.
But to be clear, I am referring not necessarily to all evangelicals, just those that consider themselves Christian and support Trump.
They are straight up hypocrites.April 20, 2018 at 1:10 pm #36312
Much better, Amus. Often you paint with such a broad brush (floor broom) it is difficult to see what you are painting.
Good article on the “Love Judge” written by David Freedlander, former EIC for Newsweek’s Daily Beast (which has weeks to live):
