Portland radio debate table - 1948

Just a quick 2 minute video from 1948 and the British Pathe archives, showing the two Republican presidential candidates then appearing for a live radio debate in Portland. It was carried by KEX, KGW, KOIN, KALE, and over the major networks across the country.

Neat vintage radio equipment shown in the video. I wonder which Portland radio studio they were in?

Wow, have times changed. Contrast this with the debates going on today.

Harold Stassen sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1944, 48, 52, 64, 68, 80, 84, 88 and 92. He continued to campaign for president as late as 2000, stopped only by death, having died in 2001.

Yes, persistent to the max. Stassen also served admirably in World War II.

According to an uncited entry in Wikipedia, this May 17, 1948 radio debate was the very first one in US history, between presidential candidates, to air live coast to coast.
