Gloria Johnson, the first woman of Portland Rock and Roll broadcasting, has passed away.
Gloria was a fixture on many of Portland’s rock stations beginning in the 1970’s and continuing into the 21st century.
She was the first Portland radio DJ I met when I moved out west at the age of 25 with a few years of progressive radio work under my belt. She was working at KVAN 1480 at the time and encouraged me to pursue work there.
R.I.P.
Yes, Gloria had a distinctive voice and was a mainstay for many, many years on KGON, and 105-KXYQ. Here’s a picture of her with fellow KVAN monomaniacs from 1973 (standing, third from left).
Thanks for sharing the picture. A lot of memories. I remember K-VAN very well. The station had a lot FCC issues through the years. Fun days in radio.
A distinctive voice and personality.
