I didn’t know about 8 1/3 until I watched radiotvphononut’s demonstration of such a unit. I recall that he stated at some point that the records and the associated playback equipment was exclusively distributed by the American Foundation for the Blind.

Correct. I had such a turntable when I was young. (age 9 through 15). The unit had 3 speeds. (8 1/3, 16 2/3 and 33 1/3) The unit also had a platter that was only 10 inches in diameter, so you could not play music LP’s with it. The vast majority of the talking books I read were 16 2/3 rpm. Those that came in at 8rpm would play for nearly 50 minutes on a single side! 🙂 It was also fairly amusing to ‘watch’ an 8rpm disc rotate very slowly.
