“Trump blew off the trip because he said he didn’t consider it all that important to honor America’s war dead, the report said, citing four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussions. “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers,” the commander in chief reportedly said. In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 Marines who lost their lives in the World War I battle at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.”September 4, 2020 at 3:12 pm #47689VitalogyParticipant

Will this be THE ONE?
Trump has survived so much scandal, could this be the story that finally drops the hammer that he can’t overcome?
So many other sources have confirmed this reporting in the Atlantic, including a report on FOX News.
Of course the WH is denying it, which is expected…but how will the GOP respond to this. Many themselves, veterans.
But this does fit Trumps egregious statements and behavior…so we shouldn’t really be surprised.September 4, 2020 at 9:05 pm #47699edselehrParticipant
This story has legs, corroborated by multiple news outlets and born out by (somewhat less egregious) previous statements and tweets the President has put out. Look at how hard he is pushing back on this – he KNOWS this is going to damaging his standing with a big chunk of his base. Essentially, he is disparaging anyone who fights for principle rather than monetary gain. Not a good look on any president.September 4, 2020 at 10:02 pm #47700paulwalkerParticipant
Could this be the issue that defeats him? No, because his base won’t take their blinders off and they never will. These ignorant voters have just enough to re-elect their savior. Trump could do just about anything and still win. This is where we are unfortunately.September 4, 2020 at 10:21 pm #47701VitalogyParticipant
There’s no doubt he said these things. He’s got a verified recorded history of as much.
Will this sink him? Nope. Unless the sources reveal themselves. Even then unlikely.
John Kelly, how long will you let the POS Trump bash you?
It would be fantastic if someone had him on tape.September 4, 2020 at 10:26 pm #47702AndrewParticipant
Paul: “Could this be the issue that defeats him? No, because his base won’t take their blinders off and they never will.”
There is no need to persuade his base to abandon him. The only voters we need to peel off for Biden are the ones who couldn’t stand Clinton in 2016 and refused to vote for her, hoping Trump would “shake things up” but in a good way. What they got is not what many bargained for.
Voting for a candidate in the last election does not automatically make the voter a devoted, unwavering, life-long supporter.September 4, 2020 at 10:43 pm #47703paulwalkerParticipant
Agreed Andrew. Let’s just hope there are enough of those switch hitters voting in 60 days.September 5, 2020 at 12:40 am #47706semoochieParticipant
If that doesn’t do it, this one should and he can’t call it fake news because it comes right out of the White House and appears to appeal only to diehard racists!: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/trump-ends-anti-racism-training-in-federal-government-white-house/ar-BB18JiSD?li=BBnbcA1September 5, 2020 at 5:10 am #47708BrianlParticipant
Where this is going to hurt Trump is what has long been considered a GOP bedrock of support – the military and veterans. His “deferrments” and criticism of John McCain alone should be enough, but many still have doubled down on Trump.
This one could well make many of them reconsider.
Another contentious point that could REALLY piss off his military base could be this.September 5, 2020 at 7:09 am #47709radiogeekParticipant
Can this hurt Trump? I hope so. But look beyond this election to future US politics.
Nazi Germany came about in one of the historically wealthy, educated, and strong democracies in the world. Why? People voted for an easy fix in an era of economic hurt and pain.
We’re likely to see our economy collapse due to the lack of progress in shoring up the income of the ordinary folks who are suffering from job losses. The folks who still will vote for Trump this fall remain a danger as they are the same as the folks who voted Hitler into power. All we have to do is find another Republican asshole who is a little more competent than Trump but whistles the same dog whistles and away the US goes into full fascism.

The Nazis did not ascend in a country with a strong tradition of Democracy. The Weimar Republic of the 1920s was born right after World War I and widely considered a failure by almost everyone. One reason the Germans embraced totalitarianism after Hitler came to power was due to bad memories of Weimar. Their short experiment with democracy had been a failure.
The US had a much longer history of democracy when the Great Depression hit in 1929 than Germany did – and that’s probably the key reason our system of government held. There were popular fascist leaders in the US too when FDR was elected, and people were worried about a fascist take-over of the US also, but obviously it didn’t happen.September 5, 2020 at 11:30 am #47711
