The redacted transcripts of Omar Mateen’s calls to Orlando Police — made during his assault on the Pulse gay nightclub — included Mateen’s claim of responsibility, as well as identifying himself to police as an Islamic soldier. All other references to ISIS or Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi were scrubbed clean by the Justice Department.
“Selectively editing this transcript is preposterous,” said Ryan, R-Wis., in a statement. “We know the shooter was a radical Islamist extremist inspired by ISIS. We also know he intentionally targeted the LGBT community. The administration should release the full, unredacted transcript so the public is clear-eyed about who did this, and why.“
The reasons for the original redaction were provided and seem well reasoned.
The only reason you care is you and the like-minded want to throw as much gasoline as possible upon the idea that Islamic terrorism is something everyone should be massively worried about (despite all statistical evidence to the contrary) to help further your own political agenda
I think that this is primarily a partisan issue. Were it not possible to “connect the dots” between pointing a finger at Islamic extremism and the idea that the Obama administration and Democrats in general are soft on terrorism, I think that many people in the Republican party would not care about the shooting primarily because it happened at a gay bar. On the contrary, they would want it swept under the rug because it makes guns look bad.
