    SEPTEMBER 15TH. TODAY IN PORTLAND RADIO HISTORY

    1904 Red Dunning was born in Hoquiam, Wash. KOIN Musical Director, 1944-69. With KOIN since 1929.

    1905 Robert E. Hartzog was born in Wesson, MS. KALE Chief Engineer, 1932-40. KOIN 27 years. KFEC, KIT.

    1934 KOIN’s Art Kirkham broadcast live from the Pendleton Round-Up. The special carried on CBS Radio.

    1972 KQIV signed on the air on 106.7 MHz., with 100 K.W. Studios were at “The Lake Oswego Elks Lodge.”

    1982 KEX’s new transmitter caught fire. A total loss: $125,000. Later replaced with a Continental 317C-2.

    1988 Victor Ives returned KVIX 1290 kHz., to former owner Dave Jack, when Ives fell behind in payments.

    1988 KVIX 1290 Old-Time Radio became KLVS, switched to the Nation’s 2nd All Elvis Station. First was: WCVG.

    1992 Stanley M. Goard died at age 86. KPFM Pioneer FM Owner, 1946-60. Launching KPAM in 1951-60.

    2012 Michael “Mike” Johnson died at age 68 in Palo Alto, Calif. KMHD Producer. KZSC Co-Producer.

    2015 KDZR 1640 kHz., Lake Oswego, Radio Disney Group, LLC sold to Salem Media of Oregon, Inc. for $275,000.

    1911 Thomas “Tom” James was born in Riverside, Wash. KPOJ & KPOJ-FM staff engineer, 1947-69.

    1916 Sid (or) Si Sherman was born in Oregon. KRWC Sales Manager, 1954-56 & Farm Director, 1954-55.

    1919 Franklin “Frank” Hood was born in Idaho. KWJJ & KPRA (FM) Chief Engineer, 1947-48. On KWJJ 1941-47.

    1945 KWJJ affiliated with ABC, Associated Broadcasting Corp. during its inaugural as the fifth network.

    1953 Dick Sheetz was born in Salem. KGON Operations Manager & Program Director, 1992-95. Program Director, 1991-92.

    1953 2nd Portland area Radio test of Conelrad at 1:30 A.M. & 4:30 A.M. 5 stations broadcast on 640 K.C. and 5 on 1240 K.C.

    1955 Charles M. Weagant died at 49 in Portland. KHFS Co-founder & Chief Engineer, 1954-55. KBPS Chief Engineer.

    1976 Harry Grannatt died at age 78 in Portland. KGW Hoot Owls “Grand Stringbean” 1928-33. KXL 1941.

    1979 Cleve Allen died at age 36 in Portland. KGW Air Personality, 1972. KINK 1971. KLIQ, KBOO, KBPS.

    SEPTEMBER 17TH. TODAY IN PORTLAND RADIO HISTORY

    1931 Kenneth A. “Kenny” Green was born in Los Angeles, CA. KAAR 1480 kHz. Vice-President & Co-owner, 1987.

    1938 KEX 1180 K.C., ended its FCC mandated night silent period and began broadcasting unlimited time.

    1945 KGW announced purchasing a Wire Recorder for remote broadcasts. Tape was introduced in 1947.

    1962 KGW Top 40 “K-62” switched its format back to “Middle of the Road” music as “Radio 62.”

    1986 Inspirational Broadcasting Corp sold KPDQ AM/FM to Salem Communications Corp. for $6.5 Million.

    1987 KKSN “Kisn 91” & KKLI “K-Lite 97 FM” were served by the IRS with a Federal Tax Lien. $56,368.44.

    1989 Clyde H. Bruyn died at age 97 in Portland. KEX Chief Engineer, 1928-33. KEX Engineer, 1933-67. KGW Engineer, 1933-44.

    1997 Jyrl Burris died at age 65 in Portland. Rose City’s first female D.J., playing Popular music on KLIQ in 1952.

    2003 Beaverton pirate “Energy 98” was given a 2nd notice by the FCC to stop broadcasting on 98.1 MHz.
