Despite the Northwest’s professed love of craft beers, only one in eight beers sold in the country falls into this category. In fact, the top three beers, by sales, are “light” beers: Bud Light, Coors Light, and Miller Lite. Bud Light by itself outsells all of the craft beers put together!
The “watered down” American beers incorporate rice or corn to replace some of the barley. Today, even some craft breweries are releasing beers that are less “hoppy.” The history of why American beer preferences skew milder and less bitter is a long and interesting one that involves the Industrial Revolution and Prohibition.
