Turn on any news channel right now, then you will have your answer.

I just wonder how long till we start to hear that he is alive and faked his death

  3. Ricksalemradio, absolutely. Probably even more than Elvis due to the proliferation of cable.

As for radio coverage, stations that have the ability to go live and are staffed as such, they are right there with this story. However, I am willing to bet that many are not.

  4. This afternoon "Charlie" was playing nothing but Jackson music. I think it was a GREAT MOVE! Also ABC Radio News continuous coverage on KEX, another GREAT MOVE. I believe KXL was also doing this. Yes, I believe Jackson's death is as BIG as Elvis. Jackson had so many twists and turns in his career, I'm drawn to this coverage.

ABC is doing an hour on Michael and an hour on Farah. These are people who, at the zenith of their popularity influenced contemporary society in major ways. The Thriller album is still the #1 selling record album of all time. Charlie's Angels is still in syndication in several countries. They were both human beings who had their good and bad points, but the fact that they are universally known around the world makes their deaths a big story.

These things come in threes.....Ed McMahon, Farah Faucett, Michael Jackson.

  6. Hal: Isn't that just so weird how it comes up, time after time, in deaths of three. I'd love to know what that's all about.

  7. Spinning the Eugene radio dial at about 9 p.m., Kool 99.1 has a few more MJ and J5 in the mix and the sat network feeding AM 840 has an occasional early J5 song, otherwise I'm not finding anyone else playing his music. KGO is talking about it and a rerun of Lars on KPNW had the first news flash.

It's a different world than when John Lennon passed. Virtually all top 40, AC and rock stations were playing Beatles marathons for the first 24 hours. There were still plenty of music stations on AM and the formats weren't as separated from each other.

  8. Listened to K103 this evening, they brought in their morning guys, took calls and played the music. It's one of the things radio does best, provide an immediate sense of community, hearing kids talk about discovering Jackson's music through their parents, hearing people talk about how they tried to dress like him, dance like him, was pretty cool. I never was a huge Jackson fan, but I loved Off the Wall. Perhaps his greatest legacy was his ability to bring people together. It's going to be even bigger as people all over the world wake up and hear the news.

I heard All Michael Jackson on Charlie, Z100, K103, The Buzz and Jammin'. John Williams was sitting in for Michael Bailey when it happened and before the fact, said he was "back on K103". I didn't know he ever was before. Go to the FCC's Daily Digest for Thursday, click on "Broadcast Actions" and tell me the first thing you see!

  10. I like how somebody at the house took a supposed 'last picture' of Michael laying on a gurney , intubated , wheeled on his way out to the ambulance. You cant get away from the poperatzy , even your closest care givers friends and family it seems.

  11. .............ALERT.............ALERT.........ALERT.................

LAPD is looking for Michael Jackson's doctor. "A doctor" who was at Jackson's house may have given him a fatal dose of Demerol for back pain after a rehersal the night before. The link:

And that happens if you 'believe' the patient when they tell you " I havent taken anything in the last 8 hours"...Right !

  12. From my newsroom sources in Eugene and Medford, no one went back-to-back Jackson in Oregon's second- and third-largest markets. I haven't heard back yet from Bend or any unmetered locations. Are smaller-market stations just too hopelessly automated to do anything? If AM 840 is only running the occasional J5 song because that's what's on the satellite, is that why Kool has MJ in the mix as well?

  13. KOOL-FM in the tri cities..featured selected cuts with interview clips of M.J. on the morning show today.

Yesterday about 4pm they aired a Mike Harvey dedicated to M.J. I think it was an old show, it was 3 hours. I talked to one of the morning show guys this morning and he told me that Gap West didnt like the idea of any of their stations going full tilt M.J. , especially in the medium and small markets that they are in.

    Posted on June 26, 2009 - 10:56 AM #
  14. Thanks, why do you think Gap would be opposed? I just posted an entry about this at OMC and I quoted Randy. I'd like to quote you as well.

  15. I dont know. I talked to a person working there this AM. I dont think he wants to be quoted about this, nor do I. I am out of radio now anyhow.

  17. I speak for myself here.

I think that the theory behind the notion of programming a wall to wall music format of any single artist for any length of time on a public radio station is russian radio programming roulette. The concept is not new. You burn out many of the listeners in about 20 minutes.

A larger market station might be able to do this sucessfully because there are more diverse " pairs of ears " avaliable to appreciate the effort and support the special programming. Smaller market stations have a more cloistered audience, narrower listening habits and will become tired of any single artist very much faster in small markets. Also, listeners in smaller markets tend to be more entrenched in their format choices ( personal experience here, from someone who moved from Portland to the Tri Cities many years ago ) and vocally active and opinionated and not shy about telling station management and programmers.

Smaller markets cater to fewer pairs of ears, and therefore , a smaller sample of opinions, and they are not as diverse a group which you would find in the bigger markets.

  18. Oregonmedia> "If AM 840 is only running the occasional J5 song because that's what's on the satellite, is that why Kool has MJ in the mix as well?"

Eugene's Kool runs local automation at night and not satellite.

I did not have the radio (or TV) on earlier than 9 p.m. and can't speak to what coverage might have happened in the afternoon when more stations have employees in the building.

  22. I've posted quick a thought on how what happened Thursday outside of Portland may have reinforced the opinions of those who feel radio as a medium is irrelevant to their lives. What do you think?

    Posted on June 27, 2009 - 10:37 AM #
  23. Now the Jackson family has taken Michael's body for a second Autopsy. They dont like the time frame for the toxicology tests. They want to know more about this Cardiologist hired by the Tour Promoter.

And the crap continues to hit the fan.

    Posted on June 27, 2009 - 12:26 PM #
  24. "They want to know more about this Cardiologist hired by the Tour Promoter."

Hired at Michael's insistence as reported in one story somewhere. The Tour Promoter's were actually against it because of the extra money. So while the doc may be in deep doo doo, I don't think the Tour Promoter will have any liability (assuming what I've read and repeated here is true).

"I've posted quick a thought on how what happened Thursday outside of Portland may have reinforced the opinions of those who feel radio as a medium is irrelevant to their lives. What do you think?"

I think if you want to share your thoughts with this group, you should post them right here.

Lets see, Jackson died of cardiac arrest in the presence of a cardiac specialist assigned to shadow him.

Moral: If you're going to be shadowed by a doctor, make sure its an ER doctor -- that way you're kept alive and stablized before the specialists can do their thing.

From the NY Times about Michael Jackson’s “cardiologist”:

“Dr. Murray, who public records show is a 56-year-old cardiologist with a practice in Las Vegas and a clinic in Houston, has lived in numerous homes over the last decade in several states, filed for personal bankruptcy in 1992 in California and has five tax liens against him for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

According to HealthGrades, a health care ratings company, Dr. Murray is board certified in neither of his two specialties, internal medicine and cardiology. Board certification is not required to practice a specialty but is recommended and indicates a high level of training and expertise”.

Let's hope this doesn't turn out to be about another case of an MD overprescribing highly addictive pain meds -- ala Anna Nicole Smith.

  27. I love this ! Salacious to the end ! This thing has taken on a life of its own here....there is more meat in the afterlife of M.J. than Anna Nicole, even Elvis combined IMO...a non board certified Cardiologist/Internist hobo doctor huh? And who do you think has been writing all those prescriptions to that Pharmacy that sued M.J. for over 100k???

And the circumstantial evidence piles up...tmz.com is gonnah make a bundle off this case !

  28. Fair enough, but I basically did post the thought. Like I said, it was quick:

While five Portland stations playing an all-MJ format may have been overkill, several Oregonians outside Portland told us they were looking forward to hearing Michael Jackson on their Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes, and were disappointed and baffled that they couldn't. There may be logical reasons why smaller-market stations are less inclined to break from their formats, but what happened Thursday outside of Portland may have only reinforced the opinions of many who feel radio as a medium is irrelevant to their lives.

    Did I go too far?
