Transmitter fire knocks KPNW off-air

  1. From their website, with interesting listener emails included:

Friday morning, July, 3rd at approximately 6:30am KPNW suffered a major failure of our main 50,000 watt transmitter. This failure was complicated by extreme heat at the transmitter site both Friday and Saturday.

By early Friday afternoon we had our 60 year old RCA 10,000 watt transmitter on the air, but a combination of heat and age only allowed us to be on the air sporadically an hour or two at a time, and then off for an hour or so. Saturday evening it appeared that the backup had stabilized. It ran fine for several hours after which our engineer left the premises to get some sleep after working almost non-stop since Friday.

Sometime early Sunday morning our backup transmitter went off the air. When the engineer arrived on site the room was full of acrid smoke and a quick check showed that the transformer had caught fire earlier and was still smoking. We have been off the air continuously since.

As to what originally happened to our 50,000 watt main transmitter, it appears to be some sort of system overload. Many of the components of the transmitter are shorted out and will require replacement. Currently, we are both ordering and borrowing parts to rebuild the transmitter.

At this time we believe that we may be back on the air by Tuesday afternoon at the earliest. We are also considering bringing another transmitter in from one of our Bicoastal Media sister stations. However, depending on the brand re-tuning a transmitter to run on 1120am can be time consuming.

As a side note, we have been overwhelmed by emails and phone calls from our listeners concerned about the welfare of the station, it's employees and our shows. We are okay...a little frazzled, but working hard to get back on the air. Many listeners have postulated that the events of the weekend were caused by President Obama, or ultra-left wing terrorists. This obviously was not the case. Like any piece of electronics equipment, transmitters will eventually fail, and occasionally the failure is massive as compared to minor.

All of us here at KPNW understand your frustration with the current situation, we are working hard to try and restore our signal and the programming that you rely on day in and day out. Thanks,

    Harris, I suppose?

  3. Harris on the main. RCA on the backup.

I will say that it's nice to know that you can rely on your fellow broadcasters when things get bad. McKenzie River is loaning us a transformer, and Tom the engineer at Cumulus is helping us get it moved to our site. Even the Chief at KXL was offering us help and spare parts today.

Thanks to all of you pros for your help and concern.

Thanks for the heads-up on this. I'm not trying to make light of this unfortunate situation, but tonight is going to be DX time on 1120!!

  5. Alfredo, good listening. You might pick up the Japanese station that I and a few listeners heard on Friday night.

    They must be joking?

It is good to see that the spirit of cooperation among engineers is still alive and well in the Northwest. Ever since the beginning of the Radio business, when a Broadcaster has had technical trouble others in his vicinity have always pitched in to help. It is one aspect of our business that makes me proud.

  8. Wonder what happended to the two big 8-ton air conditioners that were out there in the RCA Ampliphase days?

  9. I thought the main xmtr was new in about 1996. Wasn't it Canadian made?

Back in the early 80's i remember that lightning fried the lines to a couple of the towers. We had to dig up the cables to replace them. Trouble was that the water table was about two feet below the surface. What an awful job!

"Why don't you announce you're off the air?" One of the great things about radio is that when someone's in trouble, the competition doesn't celebrate; they do everything they can to help!

  11. Yes, good luck to my old cohorts at KPNW. I also relish the idea of competitors coming to the aid of a station in trouble. KPNW is one of the great AM's of the Pacific Northwest. I dx'ed them as a kid from Seattle in the 70's, and worked with some of the legends of Eugene...the late Lee Chabre, and his late boss, Dave Woodward. Best wishes to all.

Earlier this evening, I was hearing Spanish on 1120, which may have been KZSJ San Martin, CA. Now, I am hearing KANN Roy, UT. KANN identifies itself as "SOS Radio." I am surprised that I am not hearing KMOX. I haven't yet heard anything that sounds like Japanese, but I will keep trying.

  13. I asked Lundun in an email if there were any more stations helping:

At this part no, but oddly I have had some listener emails offering general help which was nice. As to the transformer, that didn't work out. Evidently there is more damage to the backup than we expected. So we wait until tomorrow for the parts to arrive. I'll be at the site replacing fuses and doing grunt work so the engineers can concentrate on the more technical aspects of the repairs.

Oh my goodness--I think that I'm hearing the Japanese station on 1120! It is putting up a good fight against KANN. KMOX is a no-show.

The 27th edition (2006-2007) of the NRC AM radio log lists KZSJ as Vietnamese... could this be the "Japanese " station that we are hearing?

  16. Looks like KZSJ also runs a lot of Vietnamese programming.

    I was a little surprised I couldn't get KBND's daytime signal today.

I'm not sure if the Asian-sounding language that I heard last night on 1120 was KZSJ or the Japanese station. At the time that I heard the station, I was using a loop antenna pointed east-west in hopes of hearing either the Japanese station or KMOX. Eventually, I also heard an English language talkshow host who sounded like Ian Punitt. I checked KEX to see if I was hearing Coast-to-Coast AM, but the program on 1120 turned out to be something different.

At the time that I heard the Asian-sounding language on 1120 (about 11 to midnight) it was still daylight in Japan... so I am fairly certain that I was just hearing Vietnamese programming from KZSJ in California.

  20. Hate to kill the DX'ing fun, but we are now back on at 50K. Speaking of KMOX, I recieved an email from a HAM operator in Phoenix, Arizona asking us to not "hurry" our repairs because he was enjoying KMOX.

Well, I owe a couple of engineers lunch. I told Robin and Dave that if we were back on the air by noon I was buying lunch. We hit the air at 11:56am.
