"1969 KWJJ 1080 switched ABC Networks from American Information to the Entertainment Network." I'm guessing that this is when KKEY lost its ABC affiliation. KEX later picked up the Information network.

  3. Yes, here's what happened: On December 27, 1968 "The Don McNeill Show" as it was now known, was cancelled. Immediately after the cancellation KWJJ requested ABC move the Entertainment Network from KKEY to KWJJ, pointing out "Paul Harvey News & Comment" was an Entertainment Network program. JJ most likely would have been an Entertainment affiliate originally but did not want to broadcast Don McNeill because the program did not fit JJ's Country Format. This was the reason Don McNeill switched from JJ to KEY in 1965 when JJ went Country. Up to this point, original ABC Radio affiliates that previously carried Paul Harvey, could continue, even though they had affiliated with one of the other three ABC Networks. Paul Harvey was growing in popularity and JJ didn't want to take a chance on loosing clearance, in case the Entertainment Network was picked up by a more powerful station like KEX, where it might run into trouble. ABC offered KEY the Information Network affiliation, which JJ was jettisoning. KEY decided to go independent again.

It's been ten years. I thought it was a mistake at the time, that branding like that, could only work in the South.

Ernie Crater was still at KKEY when he died. After a few days of having no voice above a whisper, he checked himself into a hospital, found out he had cancer and died within a day or so. We were even kidding him about his voice and he certainly had no idea at the time.
