Los Angeles Times, January 7, 1913, page II5:

    P. W. le Mown, secretary and treasurer of the Oregon Telephone Herald Company and owner of practically all of the western rights to the arrangement which by private 'phone transmits the news of the day, amusement of the theaters and harmony of the operas to the people in their own homes, is in the city. "This a wonderful mechanism was invented in Hungary, and for years a system has been in operation in Budapest and in other European metropolitan centers," he said. "Within the past five years it has had its first introduction in America, and during the last year more than 10,000 Portland residents have installed the service." Le Mown is staying at the Alexandria, registered from Portland.

Newspaper ads for the service appeared in The Oregonian & Journal:

Things were in serious trouble at KKSN/KKLI. I remember them automating KKLI and I think, KKSN. Sometime later, KKSN(AM) switched to Oldies. That was August 1987. Was the bankruptcy just not official until December?

  27. Yes, they called us in to talk about it and to assure us that we would be paid and that the stations would continue. The only Kisn air staff member to leave was Gina Ryder. I was told Mt. Hood, where she had gone to school thought it was a good idea.

An earlier marker in all this was posted on a monthly thread: Sept 17, 1987 Federal Tax Lien $56,368.44

Coming to the monthly thread will be the first blow: April 27, 1987 State Income Tax Lien $9,701.7

Craig, Dec 15th 1971 Christian Center of Salem went on air as KAPT, a month later as KCCS. It owned and ran the station in their church until it sold it in 2004. Format...a first in Christian radio...Christian Music.

  29. Broadway: First: Wish I could use the information. I'm already bending my Portland area station rule with KSLM-AM/FM because of the later transfer of studios (under different calls) to Portland.

Second: This wasn't KAPT's original sign on. I'm interested to know how long they had been off the air. KAPT was purchased by First Assembly of God Church in October 1971. KAPT originally signed on the air December 12, 1961 and was owned by Salem Broadcasters, a joint venture. Col. Carl W. Nelson was G.M. Richard Gilbert P.D. & Calvert Applegate C.E. KAPT was a Mutual affiliate. Studios at 212 High St. N.E.

Salem is in the Portland market. Side question: Why is there no "R" in "Colonel"?

    Posted on December 17, 2009 - 02:57 AM #
  33. Yes Salem is in the Portland Market but I tried to keep this history in the Portland area. I did expand it a bit to include closer cities such as Woodburn, McMinnville & St. Helens

Side Answer: Because British and American pronunciations differ but we continued to use the British spelling.

  35. Craig--Joe Allen was also C.E. of kphp,k-praise. at the time he died. You have room. Also, how have you been lately? Regards Steve.

  36. Joe Allen was a great guy. Very humurous and always in good spirits. He lived in St. Helens, so we saw a lot of him at KOHI. On my last day at KOHI (as I was getting ready to leave town for college),I had great plans for a memorable show...probably not for listeners, necessarily. While I was building up to the finale, a ball of fire about 2 feet in diameter lights up the transmitter.

At that point I knew there was a reason that I turned that monster on with the end of a broomstick and not my finger. Last time I saw Joe Allen, but I imagine he was there for quite awhile.

It looks like we're still going around on this: Before KVAN was 50kw, they were 10kw. They weren't ever 12kw during the day unless it was for testing the nighttime signal or new transmitter at reduced power during their STA. I'm not trying to be picky but know you strive for accuracy.
