It looks like Bob McCarl died the day before his birthday! We had another one just like that, not too long ago.

  3. Yes! I've found it fascinating how you can see connections in these daily posts. Consecutive events you would have rarely noticed otherwise. Also note KGW-FM's power increases. Both happened one year to the day apart.

    Posted on April 1, 2010 - 07:28 AM #
  4. I realize it's probably just semantics, but....

CBS didn't "sell" KLTH & KXJM to Clear Channel. It was part of a 7 station trade involving several markets. Also, the trade itself didn't occur on April 1st, but the execution of the trade, causing control of the stations to be switched from CBS to Clear Channel happened on the date. The announced trade was back in December of 2008.

    I know. It's nit-picky.

  5. So when did KGW-FM change its frequency? (...or as Mr. Grant used to say, "its frequently")

    Posted on April 1, 2010 - 08:31 AM #
  6. Matt: I try when possible to use dates when the control of a station is handed over to the new owner. With limited space (one line for each event) it leaves little left. I've re-written it and changed the master copy to this:

2009 CBS Radio Stations traded KLTH(FM), KXJM 107.5MHz & 5 others to Clear Channel Communication.

    Don: KGW-FM switched from 95.3mc to 100.3mc on October 10, 1947.

There's something I've been meaning to mention for some time: There used to be a caller to the talk shows, who would record ALL of them and if you wanted a copy, you would let him know and chances are, he would have it. His on air handle was "Don from Salem". I very much doubt if this is the same person and is probably much younger but thought it was interesting.

    Posted on April 1, 2010 - 10:10 PM #
  8. I think there was a different person named Don who lived in Salem. I am known for 2 things mostly. I used to win so many promotions on Stoner's Forgotten Oldies shows that I got banned from calling. But he would let me e-mail really obscure oldies to him for use on the show. For example, many people know that the Isley Brothers recorded "Twist and Shout" before the Beatles did. BUT how many people know that the Top Notes recorded it before the Isley Brothers?

My second claim to fame is that I used to call up Dream Weaver on KPAM and sing on the air. Usually, I would sing "Shtiggy Boom", a really horrible song popularized by the Nuggets in 1955. Dale Farr would play it on Friday afternoons on KBOO.

Currently, I'm 59 years old. You can use that for any reference that you are trying to establish.

  10. PS to Semoochie:

On Dream Weaver's show, I called myself "Dion". The history there is a little mean. One day at work, my boss handed out assignments that he had typed up. My boss eventually retired early because he developed Parkinson's disease. Well, he must have had an attack of the shakes while he was typing, and "Don" came out "Dion".

  12. Thanks Craig, for the revision of the CBS/CC trade. I really enjoy this feature, and in no way was I trying to minimize your hard work. My biggest concern was the term "sold." Thanks again for the correction.

For April 8th & 9th, you have 3 references to 92.3. Do you have a mini-history of the call letters assigned to that frequency locally?

Does anyone have a thought as to a reason that stations that never show up in the ratings, change calls and formats at will? I don't really see the point. It seems like their best option is to identify which format works best, stay with that one and hope for some share of it!

Just to follow up on my previous comments: If you can't sell numbers, your only hope is to sell the concept of your format. If you pick something that generally works on a national scale, at least you have something behind you to sell the concept. Programming 4 additional signals as "value add" to a non-starter is of little value.

A slow day in Portland Radio's past, nothing to report today. So enjoy this West Coast network map from 1929 showing the NBC Orange Network of Pacific stations and the ill fated American Broadcasting Co. - ABC. This was a network 17 years before the ABC we know today. This ABC was Seattle owned with flagship KJR. Also owned by ABC were KEX & KGA. ABC carried fledgling CBS on alternate nights. This ABC had almost crossed the country picking up affiliates, having just lined up Washington D.C. when the money ran out Aug 20th and the network collapsing on August 25, 1929. Actually, they switched from the New KISN-FM, which carried over to the AM. I think they were using "Greatest Hits of All Time!". Shortly afterwards, KISN went back to some semblance of the old KISN-FM format. I'd like to think it would have worked better if they'd left the full staff in place.
