And right now, we are very close to a full moon phase, so the earths crust is being flexed somewhat. Moon Phase Chart:

Ok, here is my interpretation. When I lived in Anchorage for just two years in the 90's I experienced four earthquakes between 4-5. They are certainly not uncommon.

What would be more interesting is what was the activity in the months before the great south-central quake of March '64? (one of the biggest, if not THE biggest ever recorded in North America). Is there any correlation?

  5. Paul: It's just too bad we weren't wired in 1964 like we are now for any kind of quake. I don't think they kept great records back then, not thinking it could mean something in a correlation. By the way, we're about at four quakes so far this year in Alaska that were 5.0 or better and we're just halfway through 2009.

  7. Alaska shook through THREE 5.0 quakes today! This makes SIX 5.0 Alaska quakes in June.

"Things were swinging pretty good and shaking, like pictures on the wall, bottles rattling — and my blood pressure went up at least 20 points," said Pam Rannals, a bartender in Talkeetna, about 30 miles from the epicenter. "We had bears in the parking lot last night and now the earthquake. Those are the talk of the town."

Well, right now we are close to "new moon" phase, so the sun and moon are again exerting near-maximum tidal forces on the earth, slightly flexing the crust. Some studies seem to indicate that the tidal theory is bunk... others do not!

Numbers don't lie. Two gravatational pulls on one side of the planet? It'll be easier to argue the planet is flat than to debunk that.

--------------------6.0-Magnitude Quake in Gulf of California Rattles Western Mexico--------------------

    Friday, July 03, 2009

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake rattled western Mexico Friday, with no immediate reports of injuries or damage, Reuters reported.

The quake, centered in the Sea of Cortez in the Gulf of California, struck 42 miles southwest of Ahome, a city of approximately 390,000 people in Mexico's Sinaloa state.

At a depth of six miles the quake hit at 5 a.m. local time and people in the city of Los Mochis felt windows rattle in buildings.

The Gulf of California separates mainland Mexico from the Baja California peninsula.

Meanwhile, a 5.2-magnitude quake hit southeast Colombia in the Valle de Cauca region Friday, without reports of damages or victims.

Hundreds of small quakes occur weekly up and down the Pacific coast. The biggest one of the year to hit Portland happened this morning at 5:20 am. Woke me up, goll dang it!

It felt like big bird hit the house. Just a quick bang, was only a 2.5, thank god. Centered near Laurelhurst Park. Detail.
