  1. This from The Craig Adams News Service:

"Talk 1550" KKOV will switch from its talk format back to Adult Standards, October 29th at midnight, picking up it previous slogan "Sunny 1550." As previous, the automated format will come from Dial Global. KKOV switched to Talk on April 4, 2011. That's 19 months.

Could this mean KPAM is returning to all-day conservative political talk?

    That's great about KKOV.

I hope KPAM doesn't go back to all political talk. Too much of that already. How about Classic Country?

This is an interesting move. They're replacing a station with low numbers that's saleable and presumably barter, with one that isn't! Maybe the good doctor just wanted something to listen to. What's next, KOIN 970 airing old daily CBS series?

That would be a pretty good stunt. Run Arthur Godfrey, Lowell Thomas, Art Linkletter, Arlene Francis and all those other shows that used to get a 40 share! The tagline could be, "Koin has really flipped!".

"What's next, KOIN 970 airing old daily CBS series?"

And that would be bad because.......??????

I find that now that I have XM satellite in the car and on the internet, I listen more often than not to CH82 which plays old time radio programs from the '30's - 60's. A lot of good stuff there. Yeah, there is some bad, also. Theater of the mind!!!

When did KOIN-6's sale to LIN Broadcasting become official? Missed that! Wonder if KKOV will switch call letters when the change comes on the 29th? (Which is the last Monday of the month, by the way.)

  19. While you're at it... let's flip that KOIN (970) back into time with the KOIN Clock. I love the idea of KOIN radio returning and place KXL back on 750 amd KOIN-FM 101 as classical.

I like KPOJ for 1330 because it reminds me of one wacky promotion that they did for Gilette Blue Blades in the late 1950s. They asked listeners to mail their used razor blades to the station!! I can't recall whether I read this in one of Craig's radio history posts or on another Website related to Portland radio, unfortunately.

  24. I wonder what decades they now consider "Adult Standards". It use to be 40's - 50's music. Likely now, it's 50's - 60's. With maybe a few 70's thrown in....

I think that you are probably right. In the 1980s, one would often hear big bands and swing on nostalgia/Adult Standards stations, with some pre-rock & roll 1950s pop thrown in. Now, one hears music from the late 1950s with a mix of soft adult hits from the early 1960s through the 1990s. That is not a typo; I have heard Enya and Celine Dion played on Nostalgia stations.

Before it last left this market, the "Sunny" format had shifted almost completely out of the '50s adult standards and solidly into the '60s and early '70s. Their playlist is getting unsettlingly close to my age group.

I once joked that one day, Nirvana will fall into the category of Nostalgia. Now, it is just a question of whether broadcast media, such as nostalgia-formatted radio stations, will still exist when Gen-X hits the rocking chair.

  31. Dial Global Adult Standards has lots of Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis etc but with some early light rock and even current releases by Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart (American songbook), the duets of Lionel Richie.

[Terrestrial] Broadcast media will probably be endangered by the time Gen X starts flooding the world's nursing homes. By the time my generation (Y) gets there, they'll probably be just as easy to find as new cinematic releases on Beta are today.

  36. I see today that Cumulus has signed Michael Savage to a big new deal and that Savage will return to the airwaves nationlly Oct. 23. His previous show was airing on KKOV until a few weeks ago. But if KKOV is dropping conservative talk on Oct. 29, his new show obviously won't be returning there. I wonder if any of the other Portland or Salem stations that have at least part of their schedule devoted to conservative talk programs (KXL, KPAM, KUFO, KUIK, KEX, KYKN) are going to show any interest in Savage?

They used to play "Walk, Don't Run '64" but it's been awhile. Mary Pierce used it for her theme song on KKEY. I found the original, told her about it and carted it up, just before going on vacation. When I returned, so had the newer version.

Mort, I agree..."In Space" is one of The Ventures' best efforts over the years, but "Surfing" (1962) and the first "Golden Greats" LP (1967) are in that category, too. By the way: Sundazed Records has reissued "Surfing" and "In Space" on CD and limited-edition LP, along with several other titles from the Liberty/Dolton era...all worth tracking down! Music Millenium stocks the CD editions! All long overdue for the reissue treatment! Check the Sundazed website, too...

Sundazed does one of the best jobs of remastering. I've got some old Spencer Davis they remastered and it sounds great. Much better than several other remasters of SD I've heard.

    Posted on October 19, 2012 - 02:10 PM #
  48. Couldn't agree more about Sundazed remasters. They always seem to do a good job. At the height of the CD loudness wars they were a little on the brickwalled side, but thankfully that trend seems to have moderated lately. At least for vintage reissues. Most new releases I've bothered to look at are still pretty much ruined though.

To the contrary, 1550's got way *too* great of a signal, unless you're trying to listen from somewhere way out in the sticks, or maybe the coast!

(I've gotten it rather clearly in Pendleton at night, quite a few times.)
