So...somebody I know is doing a photo shoot...and needs to do it in a 1970's vintage radio studio, with a good old board, rotator pots, turntables, cart decks, some fine old microphone, that kind of stuff. Anybody know of anything like that around here?

I doubt you'll find anyplace with rotary pots; they were mostly gone by the 70's. The Board at KMHD (at MHCC - at least for a few more weeks) is about that old, & still has two turntables & a cart deck. However it also has computer monitors, CD decks and a DAT player, so I'm not sure how much good that would do your friend.

It's actually for a short film....most of which will be shot in Oregon, but interiors could probably be done anywhere. It's three months away from shooting, so there's time. Doesn't have to be an active studio...they just need to make it look that way.
Studios were so much more interesting back then! Love seeing Stoner's pix, and others.

We have one here in Tillamook at KTIL. You'd have to talk to my boss though about filming it. There is a computer monitor but that could easily be hidden. There's a wall of records, old turntables, old board, it's vintage. Call my boss, Van Moe 503-842-4422. Maria

Very cool--appreciate the lead. I'll pass it along to the producer. Many thanks! John

More importantly, Can I be IN the movie?
I dreamed that I was in a Hollywood movie.
and I was the star of the movie.
This really blew my mind.
The fact that me,
a long haired, overfed leaping gnome,
could be the star of a Hollywood movie.Posted on July 10, 2009 - 03:24 AM # -
If you want it to look really authentically vintage, get Mike Kolb to be in the picture.

I was going to suggest KTIL too. Gotta hide the CD cart decks and the casette decks too, right?
And it you want things to appear really old, put Deane in there!

Outsider, the word you meant to use instead of "old" was "professional" wasn't it?

In your case, we'll make an exception.
Now THERE"S a one-liner.

Craig,
Is the system in your pictures still operational? It actually does look like a lot of small town stations back in the 60's & 70's, where function was more than looks.
I notice the meter is not moving and there is nothing on the turntables. The coffee cup is there but no stains on the countertop. And the ashtray is missing..............Posted on July 10, 2009 - 10:28 AM # -
Hey Deane, how 'bout Old Professional?
Posted on July 10, 2009 - 10:42 AM # -
@Deane: According to the caption on the following link, the photo was of a production room taken in 1975. The station's main studio at the time is also shown. http://www.modestoradiomuseum.org/KCEY.html

I happened to pop in to KLOG (Kelso) yesterday. Their control room looks pretty much the same as it did 30 years ago - sans the shag carpeting on the wall. And, much of the same staff is still there too. The station is still locally owned by the Hanson's, does well in the local ratings ( #1 & 2 their FM and AM), and continues a wonderful heritage in the Longview/Kelso community.

I'm not intending to get this discussion off-topic, but wasn't the offer of a tour of the KLYC studios once discussed on this board? If that offer still stands, I am certainly interested! I wonder whether they use a vintage tube transmitter.

I'd be interested too! Count me in.

WOW! I just noticed something I didn't catch originally when posted. When I went back into edit to add the "Brownie" camera to the caption. It made an entirely new post! Has this ever happened to anyone else? I don't think it ever happened with the original pdxradio website. Weird! Here it is:

The word you're seeking is "seasoned".
Craig, I'll bet I know what happened: When you clicked on "edit", there was still time to do so but by the time you sent the message, time had expired.

No. I did the re-post a few minutes later but it says the following hour. That's also weird.

I notice that also but I think it's easier just to add a PS to what you typed before.

This highly modified board....clock, rotary dial phones, etc. was being used with automation. That box on the top with the black buttons is, I think, the control box for a Schaefer. That may be why there is nothing on the meter as they're feeding the automation directly into the limiter and transmitter.
