Right Wing Extremism

An elderly fanatic shoots dead a black security guard at the museum in Washington DC where America commemorates the Nazis attempt to wipe out the Jews of Europe.

A week earlier, thousands of miles away in Wichita, Kansas, another lone gunman enters a crowded church and shoots dead Dr George Tiller, who ran a busy abortion clinic.

Within hours of the latest attack, blogs and social networking sites are buzzing with talk that the two incidents taken together confirm the rise of right-wing extremism in America.

On the left there is a strong belief that the attacks confirm a report prepared by the Department of Homeland Security earlier in the year which warned that the current political and economic circumstances in the US were creating a hothouse atmosphere within which right-wing extremism would flourish.

Those political circumstances, of course, include the election of America's first black President, Barack Obama - an event greeted with rage and horror on the extreme right.

Von Brunn is your classic right wing extremist. Filled with hate and armed with weapons using violence to achieve his goals.

  6. Deane, by definition white supremacists are ring wing ideologues. A quick study of the Nazi movement from the 20s to the present day would make that quite clear.

In a very short period of time we have had a series of murders by the three most dangerous groups of domestic terrorists: Right wing fundamentalist Christians, members of violent racist organizations and radical Muslims. All three shooters were religious extremists, all three shooters were already known to be dangerous, all three shooters were able to amass an arsenal, and all three shooters killed people who were sworn to serve. All three shooters had allies who are still cheerleading and ginning up hate in the wake of these tragedies.

Two out of these three shooters were welcomed with a wink as "real Americans" last fall by one party and one party alone. You cannot shake hands with the Devil and then say that you were kidding.

  7. I think you'll find he is not on the right, but anyway, what do right wing hate groups have to do with Republicans any more than left wing hate groups have to do with Democrats. Can anyone explain me that.

For the sake of this discussion, can we please have working definitions of "right wing extremists" and "left wing extremists?" Otherwise, this will just degrade into a flame war and will thus become a waste of everybody's time.

    EDIT-ADD:

The original article contains the following quote:

Conservatives were all talk and no action, according to von Brunn. On his website he complained, “The American Right-wing with few exceptions is totally Pacifist. The [right wing] does NOTHING BUT TALK. MORAL: America dies for want of men.”

This guy wouldn't be happy with being labeled "right-wing" because he sees such people as being too pacifist for his liking. That doesn't make him "left-wing." Again, we need some definitions.

According to CBS News the museum killer wrote in a notebook found in his car 'you want my guns, here's how you're going to get them'

Note paraphrase. Exact quote wasn't made at the time I looked.

Help me out, guys. Give me a definition of a "right wing" extremist and a "left wing" extremist. Compare and contrast the two.

This just in from Paul Krugman:

"Exhibit A for the mainstreaming of right-wing extremism is Fox News’s new star, Glenn Beck. Here we have a network where, like it or not, millions of Americans get their news — and it gives daily airtime to a commentator who, among other things, warned viewers that the Federal Emergency Management Agency might be building concentration camps as part of the Obama administration’s “totalitarian” agenda (although he eventually conceded that nothing of the kind was happening).

But let’s not neglect the print news media. In the Bush years, The Washington Times became an important media player because it was widely regarded as the Bush administration’s house organ. Earlier this week, the newspaper saw fit to run an opinion piece declaring that President Obama “not only identifies with Muslims, but actually may still be one himself,” and that in any case he has “aligned himself” with the radical Muslim Brotherhood.

And then there’s Rush Limbaugh. His rants today aren’t very different from his rants in 1993. But he occupies a different position in the scheme of things. Remember, during the Bush years Mr. Limbaugh became very much a political insider. Indeed, according to a recent Gallup survey, 10 percent of Republicans now consider him the “main person who speaks for the Republican Party today,” putting him in a three-way tie with Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich. So when Mr. Limbaugh peddles conspiracy theories — suggesting, for example, that fears over swine flu were being hyped “to get people to respond to government orders” — that’s a case of the conservative media establishment joining hands with the lunatic fringe."

  15. Left wing extremism usually involves property crime such as those perpetrated by Tre Arrow and the ELF. Also, the Weathermen placed bombs but the never intended to kill or hurt anyone. A couple of their own died, but that was an error.

Right wing extremism involves killing or maiming of people and differences in ethnicity. KKK, Neo Nazi, the shooter at the Holocaust museum.

    Sooooo

    10% of 23% is 2.3%

It's amazing how much press coverage this 2.3% gets these days. Why you ask? Because that's how awfully ignorant and repugnant they are.

Any question as to whether the Holocaust Museum shooter was a right wing or left wing extremist has been settled.

    Definitely right wing...
