  3. Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video, and Game Crazy are on their last reel. The chain plans to close all stores nationwide. No Sequel, That's All Folks.

If you live close to a Hollywood Video or Game Crazy, it's NOW you wanna stock up for cheap. I've been doing that the last month at the one on Interstate and Lombard (that one's closed now).

Last weekend, the Hollywood Video on Barbur Blvd (near Multnomah Village) was liquidating its titles. DVDs were going at $5/each, in quantities of five or more.

I recently read that Farmhouse Restaurant in Hillsboro (on Cornell Rd., across from the airport) ceased operations on June 6, after serving the Hillsboro area for 54 years! According to the Hillsboro Argus, the Farmhouse Restaurant was a victim of the sluggish economy.

I made quite a haul today at the [deleted] Hollywood Video. Not only prices went down to 5 for $20, on Monday (I think) they restocked with a couple thousand titles from a closed Movie Gallery -- and we're not talking all crap either -- I picked up somewhat older "classics" Manhattan, Groundhog Day and The Falcon & the Snowman and seven others for only $4 each. I also "hid" a bunch of other decent titles in the [deleted] section awaiting another price drop later this week.

If the sales clerk is to be believed, there is no more stock coming in.

Some (most?) Hollywood Video stores are already completely closed.

Yeah I think most are Skep, when they run out, that's it. I stocked up with about 25 movies from the one on Interstate and Lombard ... it's been closed for about six weeks now. But I've driven by some that are still open.

Well, thank God I [deleted] the location -- I wouldn't want pdxradioers cleaning out the stock before I'm done.

I KNOW they're due for another price drop -- the crappy stuff isn't moving and I saw maybe only 4 or 5 customers in 45 minutes of looking.

Hollywood Video is so dead it's in the morgue, bagged and tagged. The former location on prime location in Woodstock is already undergoing renovation to become a Key Bank branch. The former location on Hawthorne has also been long gone with "leased!" signs in the windows. Out near SW/NW 185th, those locations closed quickly as well.
Some of the other longtime locations I'm thinking of actually closed in their previous mass closings, it's been quite a while since I've been into a video store. Right now the only indication a video store was there are "free kids rentals" paintings on the windows.

  14. Wow I can't believe I missed this thread!

It is unfortunate what happened at Movie Gallery Inc. (and everything under them like Hollywood Video and Game Crazy)... I'm particularly bummed because I was a product specialist at the corporate offices in Wilsonville until I received my 90 day layoff notice back in February.

I was fortunate to be able to start a new career doing sales and marketing support for a manufacturer's representative. I still get to work with video games at the new job, but I get to add a lot of consumer electronics as well. It's like a double-dose of awesome!

I had an awesome 8 years at Hollywood Video & Game Crazy and worked with some of the best people that were all extremely passionate about their jobs. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!

Good luck to you Dark Star. It was the Wilsonville location that was still open until just this weekend. DVDs were going 6 for $15. Maybe lower. They're done.

    Update on GI Joe's . . .

The recent attempted restart of GI Joe's flamed out on the launch pad. The dumb cluck company officials, including the dumbest cluck of them all, the founder's son David Orkney, never got the rights back to the name "GI Joe's". This didn't stop them from opening a store in Bethany under that name.

Once the legal owner of the "GI Joe's" name found out about this they took legal proceedings to shut David Orkney and friends down. Orkney quickly shut down the Bethany store. Geez David, you killed your Dad's business twice!

Hopefully Trixter didn't invest any of his money with his ex-GI Joe's bigwig golf buddies in the restart . . . or did he? Hmm . . . I'm wondering if this has anything to do with his absence?

    Posted on July 28, 2010 - 01:30 AM #
  16. Why would they even try to use the GI name when they knew that even though the other company did NOT even use the name in ANY fashion, they had a lot of money? Just use a different name and everything would have been fine! oh well. R.I.P. G.I. Joes, I am almost 100% sure that the new company will NEVER even use the name. but oh well, we can think of it in our head!

Whoever it was that cleaned up at the bankruptcy auction not only owned the name, but some of the GI Joe's website addresses, logos and trademarks.

What's a bit amusing is that Norm Daniels, the former GI Joe's CEO (and likely the only halfway smart person that ever worked in the main office) DID NOT partipicate in the relaunch!

As for the four clowns that did sink their time and money into this dubious relaunch, their names are David Orkney, Brooks (B.G.) Eilertson, Ron Menconi and Ed Ariniello.

    This is from The O:

". . . After hearing that the four executives had opened a G.I. Joe's store in the Portland area, UFA [owner of the GI Joe's name] sued for trademark infringement . . .
"In an especially notorious infringement of UFA's rights in the intellectual property ..." the lawsuit blasted, "defendants are even referring to their activities as 'The G.I. Joe's Comeback,'" . . ."

  18. More bad news for local radio. Blue Oregon is reporting Loren Parks has stopped funding Kevin Mannix's initiatives. Throw in the recent death of Richard Wendt and that is two huge funders of political campaigns and radio ad buys.

Who can forget the Gregg Clapper spots earlier in the decade.

  19. The Oregonian reported that on the front page yesterday.

May be a loss in terms of ad revenue, but I think the State is better off without this out-of-stater meddling in Oregon politics.

If radio only continues to exist because of Limbaugh, religion and political advertising catering to the audience of the two, I'd gladly yank the transmitter plug myself!

I would be surprised to hear any kind of sign-off statement. The personalities and voice talent would have been laid off long ago.
