  1. "Obama and Sebellius have given the Catholic Church and like-minded religions one year to seek “enlightenment” and provide free birth control and abortifacients (with abortion next).

The Friday night news dump included a new HHS Mandate which will require Catholic colleges and universities to provide contraceptives/abortifacients to students for free, not just employees. The Catholic Church will have to pay for them through a third party, but they will pay for them.

HHS is trying to say they have met the Catholic Church demands but requiring them to pay indirectly does not relieve Catholics of the violation of their conscience and religious principles since they are still paying for them.

This is an effort to force religion out of charitable work and education. They are coming after the Catholics and like-minded religions now and they will come for you later.

Obamacare is about taking away everyone’s freedom. It will not stop at religion.

Obama would love nothing more than for this to continue to dominate the news. Average Americans overwhelming support the use of birth control. It's a losing issue for the exrtreme right wing lunatics.

Other than that, it's just more fake outrage from a pedophile supporting institution and their idiot cult members trying to bring us back to the stone age.

This is an effort to provide basic preventative health care to anyone who needs it, period.

For years, the Catholic church has used business to impose it's moral code on people, and that practice is going to end.

There is acting as a CHURCH, and in that role, it's perfectly acceptable and encouraged to perform moral advocacy. We have that protected by the First Amendment. Though I do not agree with the moral stand, I absolutely support CHURCHES acting as such. Freedom of religion is one of our more significant founding values.

We don't regulate churches much at all.

Then there is BUSINESS. We do regulate business period. Labor laws and protections are a basic fact of life, and since we've linked health care to employment so strongly, regulations on health care policy extend into business.

I frankly would prefer we do not do this, having the government administer health care ACCESS, but the US isn't there yet. Might never be. Who knows?

BUSINESS is different from CHURCH. CHURCHES do not pay taxes, because they are serving the public and empowering people to worship. BUSINESS is about making money, and we do tax business accordingly.

A CHURCH going into BUSINESS, must act as every other business does, period. That is the debate going on right now, and nothing more.

If the Catholic Church decides it can't do business, somebody else will fill that niche, having no trouble at all complying with basic health care policy.

The year is for transition purposes. Either close it down, or separate the church from the business, or refactor the business somehow to better comply with the regulations or policy.

Many asked for this time, which was easily granted. It just so happens to put things past the elections.

I totally agree about this being in the news! Go big guys! It's all a very serious win for the left.

And how is it that a school should now be forced to not only give birth control to teachers but to students as well? The students are there to learn moral teachings too, one of them being that contraception is immoral. Kind of sends a mixed message doesn't it?

Why do you keep harping about "access"?

Even a child can get free condoms through various private and government agencies. Why must religious organizations be FORCED to provide contraception, as if they didn't, the student or employee would not be able to get it?

    Orwellian indeed!

The only people really worried about this are the ones most interested in making other people's choices for them.

All the rest of us, a majority mind you, are looking forward to much cheaper, lower risk and more robust health care access policy.

I think I can solve fairandbalanced's problem with this issue... just take insurance totally out of the employers' hands... make a single-payer universal system for all... with all possible medical treatments and prescriptions covered... then the Catholic Church (as an employer) wouldn't feel imposed upon and all who need access to health care will have it!

    Why keep talking about access?

Simple, 50 million Americans do not have adequate access to preventative health care.

For those who do have some kind of access, their access costs are extremely high, as is their risk exposure.

Again, F&B, this policy is about changing that. The goal is to get all Americans low cost, low risk ACCESS to health care. Specifically, no-co pay access to preventative care is a key cost cutting measure, necessary to prevent use of emergency / critical care services, as well as for preventing / catching major medical early enough to treat at lower costs.

The policy is driven by COST OF ACCESS. Your moral stand is too expensive, and it's a slippery slope where we allow one religious exception, we allow all of them, and that means we have religious people in control of national policy.

Not acceptable, because we wouldn't have national policy, and we won't get the benefit of large pools of people, etc...

Some religions oppose contraception, others transfusions, still others antibiotics, etc...

That is why religious organizations have a year. The policy is the policy. They can go and sort out their morals on their own dime and time.

And why should the government have such power and why should individual freedom be so restricted?

But you've missed the point of the thread. They also want to force Catholic schools to pass out birth control to their own students.

Once again--how is "access" an issue? Just about anyone can get free condoms. Why must religious organizations be forced to hand out the BC?

So UF&UB doesn't care about America/Americans. Now we're getting to the root of his problem with Universal healthcare.
