  1. I'm surprised no one's posted about this yet. Terry announced it this morning, they're already off the website, but no official word from Entercom at the moment.

Portland Radio continues to implode. Those guys were always so cool to me when I saw them every morning. It's sad to see good, local talent get pushed aside, when it's the talent that keeps people listening.

  2. Welcome to Corporate America, it's all about ratings and money ! if you don't have a top 5 rating, your days are numbered, It's unfortunate cause guys like Nelson and Terry are entertainers, Corportae America has forgotten about that, that's why there are so many great personalities out of work.. Another sad day for P-Town..

  3. ...and now that we're in our new economy, a market like Portland is just...
somewhere down the line, a corporate outpost. Whatever.

Sorry, I guess it must be all the rain and grey skies!

  4. Never listened. I imagine many people didn't listen otherwise the show would still be on

    Count down in...

This puts a big question mark on The Buzz' future. Will they keep the format, with less personality? Will they move closer to K103 or stay the course, with cheaper talent?

  7. maybe replacing "The Buzz" with "Smooth Jazz"?

  8. The Master of Disaster once met Nelson. He had some interesting words to say about this forum. Nothing to get anyone in trouble, but was interesting.

The Portland radio dial is as full of format holes as a piece of deli Swiss cheese; right now one outside best guess is as good as another. It would be cool if they brought Q105 back and positioned it straight between K103 and Z100. We can dream, can't we? Oh, wait, I think that's illegal.

  9. Entercom's "The Buzz" might be thinking about taking on CC's K103, wanting to get ahead start before Alpha moves "The Game" to 750, and opening up their new Soft Rock 95.5 KUFO ?

  10. Always hate reading about this kind of thing, but it is sadly, part of the biz that is radio.

I worked with Nelson back at Z100 in the 90s and even hired him to do a commercial at our home studio. The man just makes me laugh. Hope he lands on his feet, he's a great talent and made my time at Z one the high points of working there.

Before I read this, I had been pondering something else. It occurred to me that before Alpha got around to putting on a younger skewing AC, K103 could move far enough in that direction that it wouldn't be a big enough hole anymore. They're already down to about one 70s song per hour. If they move much farther, something might open up on the other end, ie. 45-54. Craig, I don't think there's a chance of the KUFO call being revived unless it's a nostalgic "90s Rock" format.

  12. Nelson & Terry were not bringing in the ratings to justify their salaries. I've been saying this for a long time. 105.1 needs to become a music intensive Adult CHR, much like Q105 in the late 80's.

No show brought more business to my door than Nelson & Terry. I will not rely on a small group of people schlepping a meter to make media decisions. RESULTS are what matter and let me tell you, these guys delivered! Not to mention... They were great for this community.

KUFO was more or less a 90s Rock format when it mercifully died.

  15. Nelson and Terry were always great to me during my years at Entercom. It's always sad to see this happen, and leaves me wondering as well as to what everyone's next move will be.

    Posted on April 29, 2011 - 09:17 AM #
  16. It's interesting that the immediate assumption is that Entercom pushed them out. It is very rare that someone would be on the air to announce they are not coming back after being informed their contract had not been renewed. Maybe more wheels in motion for 95.5.?.

    Craig,

I call May 15th. Mitch and Daria go to mornings. Watcha think about "Lite Rock" 105.1? K103 needs someone to TRY and knock them off the mountain....

    Posted on April 30, 2011 - 10:33 AM #
  22. Look for 105.1 to try and beat 95.5 in the CHR race. Nicolle and Skippy could return to 105.1, while 97.1 flips to AC. If Entercom wants to compete with K103, they will need the 100,000 watt signal of 97.1 to make it worthwhile. Of course, 97.1 could still flip back to KISN Oldies instead.

The Buzz OWNS the Hot AC position. I don't expect them to let that go but there could certainly be some tweaking within the format.

  26. 105.1 is sticking with Hot AC for now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them move in more of a CHR direction. The changes have just begun.

  27. Nichole is not a big market talent. I bet the replacement show will be better than that. I don't see anyone doing smooth jazz in Portland unless it becomes a ppm winning format elsewhere.

They already are and have been. This has been covered on this board, even recently.
KKCW 103.3 HD2 is, and has been, Smooth Jazz. Anyone who wants to listen to it just has to get an HD Radio, not a problem. There are many other formats there, also.

  29. This from All Access:

------------------------------KRSK Morning Producer Exits, Wakeup Crew Out Too?------------------------------

ENTERCOM Hot AC KRSK (THE BUZZ)/PORTLAND NELSON & TERRY morning show producer MATT WILCOX exits after seven years. While unconfirmed, the morning show of NELSON & TERRY are off the station's website, with "BUZZ Music" listed for 5-10a.

Said WILCOX, "I got to work with some really cool people during my days on that show and look forward to working with some really cool people in the future. If anyone is looking for a kick ass air talent/morning show producer/future programming star/all of the above, my e-mail is mattwilcox@hotmail.com."

The station is running a promo that says "more music in the morning" is in answer to listener demand. Apparently, they don't plan a personality driven morning show, in the near future.

    From Radio-Info.com:
In Portland, Oregon, Radio-Info confirms that Entercom's Hot AC KRSK-FM (105.1) "The Buzz" morning show producer Matt Wilcox has left the building. A staffer tells Radio-Info they cannot comment on a replacement, or why the "Nelson & Terry" morning show has been replaced by "Buzz Music"

  32. I have listened to the Nelson & Terry show since they began on this station. I actually followed Nelson over from "that" other station. They have made my morning for so many years that I really don't know what to listen to now. I pray for them and their families that they find another station to go to. They were not only entertaining but they helped this community with all of the fundraising and other projects they worked on. I have also come to enjoy the Daria and Mitch show, but feel I may have to ban this station all together!

  35. I just hope for the best for Nelson. He is truly gifted and in my opinion, is worthy of a major market station like L.A. or New York. Having worked with Nelson for 10 years I can say he is the most talented person I have ever met in my 30 years here in Portland. Good Luck my friend!

  36. I know this station made a big mistake by ousting Nelson and Terry. I for one will not be listening anymore. I will listen wherever they are. This station has been making some very stupid mistakes in the last 2 years involving their hosts and it shows.

  38. I'm sorry, I listen to internet radio on my smart-phone. Why on god's green earth would I want to bother with the same , old, boring, tired-out, middle-of-the-road radio programming that has bedeviled Portland since at least the mid-seventies? Go to the bay area (not that I like it there) or even LA and their are lots of small quirky stations playing great, great, stuff. Oh, yeah, I forgot- I can get them on my smart phone. THe media is evolving. Portland Radio stations and their corporate owners can change or continue to lose market share. Guess what? I'm the market. I go elsewhere. The constant, boring, tired old blaming of corporations for this belies the truth that people now have limitless choices, and Portland Radio can just bugger off for all I care. If it's good, I'll listen, if not, I won't. Very. El. E. Ment. Ar. Y.

If they were going to move Daria and Mitch to AM drive, I don't think they would promote a music intensive morning show.

  43. 105.1 needs a morning personality, and less talk in the afternoon and night.

    Posted on May 15, 2011 - 01:40 AM #
  44. I haven't seen much evidence that a "more music" morning show has ever won the day part- especially in a mainstream format. It is usually just a placeholder.

At this point I think they should put Daria and Mitch into morning drive. Their chemistry is excellent and they're both extremely talented.

Chatter in the afternoons on a music station, especially when trying to win in the office, doesn't fare very well. So, in my unsolicited opinion, they should go with "more music" for the afternoon show and keep a personality-based show in mornings.

And, as long as I'm spewing prattle, the "Entertainment Report" should either go away completely, or be trimmed to a maximum of two minutes. As well done as it is, it comes across as self-indulgent. Again, a tremendous amount of talent, but it needs guidance and boundaries.

Tom, I totally disagree. I listen to the afternoon show to hear Daria, Mitch & Ted. Not music. It would kill my listening habits if they went to the morning drive.

    Lurk,
Just a question, not a judgement, but if you tune in to hear Daria, Mitch & Ted, not the music, wouldn't you listen to them no matter what time they are on? If they are good in the afternoon, why wouldn't they be good in the morning?

    Just wondering.

  49. I am so sorry that I missed the last time Nelso and Terry were on. I followed Nelso also from 'that station'. I missed it when they removed Valerie Ring. N and T kept me awake to work and when i lost my job. they kept me laughing. and no I dont thinkthey willmove Mitch, ted and darlia, I really dont think any of them can get up that early.
Corperate has ruined too many things. they go for the bottom dollars and to hell with what is wanted. Hot topic, been there lately I havent for over two years corp. got to them. Burgerville, havent corp got to them. papermill in camas a few years back got bought out and the company couldnt believe that a small out fit like that was making money. so they tore out one machine. got gov. grant to destory the machine making the paper that covers your taco and macD. burgers. guess what. the bean counter that said the machine wasnt making money got fired. the mahine they took out was the one that paied the bills. OOOPS. corp. CAN BE WRONG.
What I dont understand is they got rid of N and T but kept Sheryl???????
and Verlie R. yes I missed you on the radio!!!!

  50. Bad radio companies, bad! How dare you fire people who are underperforming and failing to create the level of listenership required to effectively monetize the radio station? Let’s just keep them on ad infinitum due to a handful of fans on the internet.

It's just shocking, I tell you. You'd think this was a commercial enterprise of some sort!

Note from reality: The big bad radio corporations generally do not get rid of people (or formats for that matter) that are successful. It’s often the contrary. If that morning show were working they would have kept it. It’s not about my liking or not liking Nelson & Terry. It’s irrelevant.

PPM has proved what everyone knew forever: There are few people on music driven stations that create real listenership in of themselves. (Sidebar: Those people are talk show hosts.)

And those few (real) on-air personalities that can do it on a music formatted station are being well rewarded at major market stations across the country. The majority of DJ's, however, are finding themselves (often permanently) out of work as they can’t move the needle and such people are (sadly) a dime a dozen.

I ain’t hatin’. That’s just the facts, Jack.
