It could be worse. I was once told of a small town California station, where the owner had an air shift and always signed off with the words, "Drive carefully, won't you?". At some point, he was killed in a well publicized auto accident and the station continued to run his show for years, complete with that infamous tagline! I heard the story 40 years ago and at that time, his show was still on. I have no idea how long it continued to air. It could be there still, a ghostly reminder of what happened on that fateful night.

  4. Sadly, I believe that job posting is just an EOE requirement. I still enjoy Dave with Helen on AMNW, Monday-Friday.

  6. Are they really going to the KPAM Drive, do I win for posting that on July 23rd then?

Excellent if they do go to PAM

  8. Might be the ratings boost KPAM needs.

Bob Miller in the morning with Mark and Dave in the afternoon. Hard to beat that combo.

  11. Since nothing has been said publicly on the KPAM situation, if Mark and Dave start out as Drive time, is it highly possible that when Bob Miller retires they would get drive time, provided their ratings are acceptable?

New post on the Mark and Dave FB page. Jim McClaren was "shown the door" today at KEX.

  13. Okay, so let's have a little review of the bloodletting:

Mark and Dave let go from KEX
    Then Scott Lynn
    Then Jim McLaren

Honestly, I happen to think that Scott Lynn and Mark/Dave go to KPAM, and Jim McLaren ends up either at KXL or KPAM.

  15. More Cuts at CC stations. Former Kisn-FM Morning Man & Program Director, Danny Davis was let go after 15 years at KOY Phoenix.

    This from All Access:

    ------------------------------Cutbacks At Clear Channel/Phoenix------------------------------

ALL ACCESS has heard rumbling of downsizing at CLEAR CHANNEL/PHOENIX. What has been confirmed so far is that Hot AC KMXP BRYAN ALLEN and sister Adult Standards KOY-A personality DANNY DAVIS have left the building.

More information will be provided upon confirmation.

It amazes me that they let Jim McLaren go. Jim had a network quality delivery, and excellent writing skills. (That is not to say those who remain aren't solid news folks!) I hope he ends up somewhere that appreciates his abilities. He's one of those guys that every time I would listen to him I would think, "god...I suck..." According to a conversation with a former co-worker, Jim has a wine business, hopefully he can survive on that. Can't help but feel bad for the people who are left.

  17. Clear Channel appears to be gutting the place. Could Paul Linnman be next? As is the case with local TV, newscasts and news talent is the only identifying factor for a local TV station (AM Northwest on KATU as well) If you get rid of local talent, radio or TV, you have NO identity you're just like elevator music--a kind of generic disconnected entity. Since many stations are now voicetracked were these firings done by voicetrack?

I found an interesting article that really spells out the Clear Channel financial situation. This first article was published March 2012:

Clear Channel had a ratio of debt to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of 11.1 times last year, compared with leverage of 1.9 times for CBS, one of the largest radio operators in the U.S., and 4.37 for Lamar Advertising, owner of billboards and other outdoor advertising space, Bloomberg data show.

    Another article in Forbes
Clear Channel’s liabilities exceed the value of its assets by $7.8 billion. Simply put, Clear Channel has a negative net worth of nearly $8 billion. And that is thanks mostly to its $20.3 billion in debt — about $15 billion of which was taken on to Clear Channel’s balance sheet to finance its acquisition by Bain and Lee.

Seems like it's just a matter of time before CC ends up in bankruptcy court.

Instead of pulling people off the air, they should sell all those stations and let new owners bring back radio to radio. Better than keeping an empty studio lit all day.

    Best, Mike

  22. I dont suppose it's nothing more than coincidence that Mark and Dave are now columnists for the Portland Tribune.. a Pamplin Media Group enterprise. Can it be much longer for them to appear on KPAM?

    Posted on September 5, 2013 - 12:58 PM #
  23. Great way for Mark & Dave to get around their Clear Channel non-compete clause!

They won't begin on KPAM for up to a year. I wouldn't think we'll hear from them until 2014.

This way they keep in the public eye without broadcasting and can make some money.

  24. Graig, are you making a prediction or do you have the real lowdown and dirty facts? If Mark & Dave did show up in a year on KPAM one could ponder which local talent might be replaced as in Bob Miller, Victoria Taft, or Terry Boyd? Perhaps Bob will retire or they'll just make room among the existing staff.

  27. If I had to guess... Since their blog indicates they work for "K??? - 3-6pm"... one of two things.. Bob Miller retires.... Terry Boyd's world moves to mornings, OR, Bob stays, and Terry Boyd's world moves to mid-days. Prefer the latter, keeping KPAM live and local for ~12 hours a day...

    Posted on September 6, 2013 - 09:14 AM #
  28. Agreed - prefer local. Michael Methven isn't doing it for me. New show is needed in the mid-day slot. I've listened to Terry Boyd's World since day 1 b/c KEX had been messing with Mark & Dave's show. Really want them back on air as they were in the good old days - Believe it or Don't, Phrase of the Day, Friday Quiz Show - but don't want to lose Terry in the process. In the meantime, I'll enjoy their column!
