Local TV News Changes

  1. A few years back there was a website called oregonmediainsiders.com which became a great source for local media related news. It did a good job but the people who ran it realized there was no money to be made and it quickly folded. I doubt it will make a comeback but for those interested here's some local media rumblings.

    - Julie Grauert leaving KPTV and moving to New York. Not sure when this is effective and don't know if she has a tv gig in NY. She's just always wanted to live there.

    - Amy Troy moving to mornings at KOIN. Usually when new management takes over it likes to make moves (sometimes for the sake of making moves). Personally, I would watch Amy read the side of a cereal box.

    - Michael Berk cut to part-time in the KGW Sports Department.

As for ratings... KPTV winning 5 of 8 newscasts. KGW sinking like a stone

KPTV is a great story. A decade ago they were an afterthought. Two decades ago they were still using film for a field report. They have found the formula, though it may not be everyone's favorite style.

KGW's falling ratings will be corrected, mark my words. The owners, Belo, won't accept anything less.

KATU and Fisher are in limbo, as the company apparently is for sale.

KOIN? Well, if they can just hang in there they may come out alright.

Is Kacey Montoya and Matt Brode got the axed from KOIN's new management?

Looking at the KOIN Bio.....I see there are less and less news reporters/anchors after Lin Media took over the station.

  4. Forgot to mention those two. They are married and moved to L.A. Not sure if if they left KOIN by choice or not.

  5. OMI was a good site. With local media, by the time you realize you haven't seen X anchor/reporter in a few weeks, you've forgotten about them. KGW has been pretty amazing in their continuity and longevity. Didn't realize Thom Jensen and his wife left KATU.
One thing PDXers should appreciate is the number of people with Portland ties working in the market. Most markets in the 30s are simply rest stops for those on the way up or way down.
Odd though that the market leader may have had the most reporter turnover in recent years.

    Posted on February 24, 2013 - 10:18 AM #
  6. Thom Jensen was let go at KATU about 3 months ago. Perhaps KGW will pick him up as that's been its modus operandi in recent years:
    -Art Edwards
    - Ed Teachout (subsequently fired)
    - Kathy Marshall

It's a myth that KGW is the market leader. Hasn't been that way in a while. Both KPTV and KATU beat them across the board.

One thing about Portland weekend news, it's getting less airtime. KOIN 6, KGW 8 are only half-hour long on weekends. KPTV cut their 5pm newscast on Saturdays. I wonder if KOIN, and KGW is going back to 90 minutes weekend evening newscast since the economy is getting better and there's new management in the station. As for Kacey Montoya she was controversial with KOIN old management when they hire her in 2007.

Well, for the record, Tracy Barry moved to Portland from KSTW Seattle/Tacoma, an indie. If I am not mistaken she is a grad of Washington State University.

I have always admired her strong, serious style. She is just right for Portland.

Tracy isn't my top PDX anchor, but I'm not tired of her. There are plenty of others way ahead of her on the Tire List.

The worst produced newscast my mother and I have ever seen was on the Fox station in Yakima, WA, the closest to Pendleton, OR, where we were staying while on vacation last year. Even more incredibly, it's produced for the Fox station by the CBS station in Yakima. Really no solid, real news, just filler for 30 whole minutes. (For this reason, many people in the Pendleton area sign up for DirecTV so they can get the Portland station, which are much, much better than those in Yakima/Pasco. Pendleton has no stations of its own. Plus DirecTV carries the network stations in L.A., many Pendletonians are relying on those for the broadcast networks' primetime fare.)

    Best, Mike

If you miss seeing Tracey Montoya, she is doing videos for Digital Trends.

BTW, I swear I saw her at the Tualatin Fred Meyer store the other day, so I don't know about the moving to LA part. Maybe just visiting here?

  17. If you were in Pendleton..you were watching the FOX station KFFX Pendleton/Tri-Cities Analog was aired on Channel 11...probably different now...virtual channel ? ..anyway that station has always been that way since it went on the air some 15 years ago..first was on translators from Spokane..but got a permanant city of license for Pendleton, Ore..then later Tri Cities added to that ...

They have a co-op with KVEW/42..ABC affiliate here for local newscasts..use their air talent to do 10 mins of local news..I think this thing is tranlated up to Yakima where they use talent from KAPP/44 ABC and same...Apple Valley Broadcasting...I dont know who actually owns KFFX ...might be apple valley for all I know..but I do know who does there pathetic stab at local news..

  18. Here's another bit of news.

Former KGW News Director Rod Gramer's goal was to be a General Manager. He was passed over for the job twice while at KGW.

He left KGW about a year and a half ago to become GM at Tampa's Bay News 9, a 24 hour news channel. A couple months back Gramer was let go. No word if he is back in the business.

Smaller and medium market tv really has changed in recent years. In Idaho Falls/Pocatello, (an area of over 300,000), the Fisher CBS affiliate operates in the News-Press Gazette ABC affiliate studios. They use the same set, (with a different background), the same reporters, weather team, and anchors, (with the exception of the 5:00-6:00 hour where they have seperate anchors.) The Fox affiliate, also based in News-Press Gazette building, airs a 9:00 newscast that is just repeated at 10pm on the CBS affiliate. The same type of arrangement is in use in Palm Springs, CA, a similarly-sized market.

  20. The dirt I heard was Kacey Montoya landed a reporting gig at KCBS-TV, Los Angeles. Her husband, weatherdude Matt Brode, is looking. Amy Troy was told she was being moved to mornings. She politely refused, and she was politely fired.

KFFX FOX 11 is the same ownership as KAYU FOX 28 in Spokane and KMVU FOX 26 in Medford OR. KFFX FOX 11 10pm is produce by KNDO/KNDU (Yakima/Tr-Cities NBC Station) is the same for KAYU FOX 28 which KHQ NBC 6 produces 10pm newscast.

The Fox newscast we saw out of Yakima used a generic Fox Network logo as its opening/closing title for the newscast, reusing it as a bumper in and out of every commercial break. The announcers were...well, embarassingly bad in our opinions. And the set looks thrown together (and I'll bet it probably is!). No money even for a virtual set or production values? Wow.

Any help with the KOIN 6 Morning News. They've been dead last in the Portland news race ever since they started their morning newscast in 1993. Too many musical chairs during to morning news. Remember Mark Hendricks, Marsha Coffey, and Heidi Sommers during the first ever KOIN 6 morning newscast.

    From Shauna Parsons' Facebook

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: We are thrilled to welcome Amy Troy to the Fox 12 family! She will be anchoring the 8pm news and joining Wayne Garcia for the 10pm news. I [Shauna] will be focusing on the 5 & 6 O'clock newscasts (and spending nights at home with my family!). This is exciting news for all of us and I hope you'll welcome Amy with open arms. We had a little bonding session over lunch today. I think you're going to love her!

Kathy Smith, there is a name I remember. She was really good. I remember when she was lured to KIRO in Seattle in the mid-70's, to become the third member of a 3-member anchor team. It didn't last, and she returned to Portland not soon after. But a true talent in her day. I always thought she would eventually end up in L.A., but perhaps lifestyle decisions kept her in Portland.

I went up to the main desk at KGW, for some reason and Kathy Smith was standing there, just shooting the breeze with the receptionist. She was at KATU at the time but what really surprised me was how young she was! A little polish can go a long way!

I see that KOIN's morning show now has a female co-anchor, Elishah Oesch. They may also be in the market for a morning show producer.

I am somebody who watches more hours of local news broadcasting than any human should be allowed. I watch all four local stations in Portland at the same time. I am a freelance videographer (stringer), and I need to know who is running the stories I submit.

I only do this part time, and any income I make is just extra, so I don't get hurt feelings from the stations. But I find myself watching these newscasts even when I haven't shot anything.

One thing I can tell you, is that the reason KPTV is doing well in the ratings is because they are very active in providing the best, and most content. They have a lot of hours to fill, so they run more stories than the others. They also try and use as much actual footage as possible in their reports. They will send a photographer to a scene, even if there is nothing impressive to see. You don't get the action, but still get a picture of where the story happened.

One thing I have noticed about both KGW and KOIN is that they re-run the same stories, sometimes for days, just because they were able to get the shots. They will also show maps and press release photos instead of actual footage, simply because it's free and easy.

People are starting to figure out what a bad news story looks like. It's the same reason the Oregonian is doing so poorly. People can get better pictures and stories from facebook and twitter, and actual footage from youtube.

Take a minute, and watch side by side broadcasts of different stations, you will certainly see what I'm talking about.

She doesn't have to comment on a story, you can tell by her smirk. Every time she does that I just want to reach through the TV and bitch slap her.

W7PAT, you have made it clear on two different posts you don't care for Tracy Barry.

When I said, "I have always admired her strong, serious style. She is just right for Portland", I didn't neccesarily disagree with you. She is not an L.A. anchor, for sure. She's pleasant, but she also comes off as somewhat of a bulldog, which will probably keep her in Portland, and longevity in the tv news biz is priceless. Just ask Jean Enerson of KING in Seattle, who is somewhat softer in presentation than Barry, but still serious and has gained a huge following mainly due to her longevity.
