  1. At 12:30 PM on Thursday KORC returned to the airwaves with music and ID's while we sort things out, regular programming to start Saturday.

Still working out some kinks. New Studio, new transmitter building, new emergency generator, new automation (BSI), new board (Arrakis), new, new and more new... if you look hard you can find one or two bits from what was on the air a year ago!

Good thing we moved, the old studio building is in foreclosure, the old tranmitter building had already started deconstructing (decomposing).

Power increase was filed (5 kW-D) this week, should show up in "accepted for filing" in a day or two.

Among other things I had to rebuild the T-Network, I'm told it worked "OK" at the end of 300' of RG-8, but wouldn't match at the end of 6 ft of RG-8. It was 0.002 mfd feeding a T of inductors, it's now a T with the capacitor in leg of the T, but 0.0074 mfd, which is giving a reasonable match considering the short tower, about 7 watts coming back at 1 kw.

"Grand Re-Opening" to take place on April 1st... I thinks that's appropriate!

Congratulations! I will have to see if I can pull KORC in from Hillsboro tomorrow morning.

That's great; the coast has always needed a strong AM signal!

  5. That's Great News! Congratulations! Keep us in the loop on how things are going. It is hard to pick you up in Portland, things can slip by us.

We need to hear from "Randy in Eugene" on how he's picking up KORC. Randy are you out there?

From Hillsboro, I can't null out KGNW enough to hear it.

  7. My friend in Seaside, OR Patrick Martin is hearing KORO 820 kHz.
He was able to phase out Seattle's KGNW and receive Classic Rock
music by Guess Who, Queen etc. He's receiving the signal fairly
    well over KGNW.

Here is Salmon Creek, WA, I'm just hearing KGNW. Will give KORO
    on the Kiwa loop soon.

I tuned in around 5:45 PM on Friday evening (from Hillsboro) and heard oldies playing on 820. I was able to partially null out KGNW so that at times the oldies station was considerably stronger. I did not hear a KORC ID.

  10. Thanks for the reports.

On the weekend (Saturday) I was working on my motorhome at my wife's locomotive shop in Woodland, WA, and at about 6:30PM KORC was coming in fairly well on the east side of town along the river. Over by the Oak Tree KGNW and KORC were mixing it up pretty good.

Sunday AM I could copy KORC in and out over KGNW near my house in Camas. I've had reports the skywave has been heard in Spokane.

The 5 kW will being the theoretical .025 contour well into southern, WA. But we all know the conductivity is well below theoretical coming across the Coast Range, so that isn't going to happen.

Signal is pretty good coming east on the Alsea Hwy (34), but by I-5 it is in the noise. Next time I'll; take the FIM and find out what I really have. It will be interesting to see what 5 kw does, it's the signal into Lincoln City that I'll be most interested in, and 5kw should fill in the holes. Same in Florence.

Almost got an ID from Hillsboro this morning about 9:25... heard a womans voice say central coast 820.... then it faded about that time they played Foreigner " I want to know what love is". Near the top of the hour I heard an extensive weather forecast that included coastal towns such as Newport, and mentioned a "thunderstorm" which seems unusual. Before 9:00 they played an Eagles tune, and perhaps I heard something by James Taylor about quarter after 9. Severe fading, 2hz beat, and splatter from a "screaming preacher" from 800kHz made for pretty rough copy. I was just using a small Sony portable that nulls out 820 KGNW quite well. Ability to produce a sharp null on KGNW seems to be the critical factor here for reception of KORC. The radio that worked best for me this morning was an unlikely choice, a Sony "pocket" TV/radio combo FD 30A !

Got a nice clear id at 7AM this morning... male voice, followed by female voice weather report. First time I have heard the call letters and "Waldport"
Again, I was using the unlikely Sony TV/radio combo, which produces very sharp nulls (at least around 800 khz... at night this radio can null out KPDQ AM well enough to allow reception of a co-channel station in Penticton BC!)
Was KORC running night power at 7AM?

  16. KORC has PSRA of 500 watts at 6AM. Looks like sunrise is right around 7AM now, so they could have been at 1KW at 7am. Haven't been able to pick them up in Portland, hoping the 5KW days changes all that.

I think that "official" FCC sunrise is 7:30 PDT for March and changes to 6:30 PDT for April. The 500 Watt PSRA level is likely what I was hearing. Would have been one great catch if they had still been at the 15 watt night level

  18. New poster from Washington State checking in here: I(along with my folks) stayed in a resort in South Beach(outside of Newport) and was able to pick up KORC the four days we were there pretty well on a regular SONY AM/FM Walkman; also, when we left today they were airing Casey Kasem's AT40 the 70's. I think the shows are on Saturdays at 9 AM and Sundays at 3 PM if anyone's interested.

  19. Congratulations for getting back on the air. Are you going to carry Ron Norwood's Doo-Wop Express again?

  20. Power increase is filed, and Wayne Davidson is doing the structural analysis work to go to 1/4 wave (300 ft) tower (two step, kind ok like KRKO, but, we hope, without the environmental issues). The Magnum we have can go as high as 370', so after the old tower fell in 1990 a good choice was made for a tower with growth potential. It is curious that the former owner had been given info that there was no hope of going higher. I have to say it looks flimsy, probably because it isn't painted so is not highly visible. When I measured the face and leg diameter I was pretty sure we could go higher, and Wayne confrimed it. Based on my experience, "Where there's a will there's a Wayne." He did some great work form me during my Qualcomm days. On one tower the original analysis indicated $300k in upgrade work, but after Wayne's review the upgrade went to $0k Lot's of mistakes and bad assumptions in the original work.

We are going to stick very close to format, Casey is OK, but Doo-Wop skews too old, my research shows that it is a big a turn off to the younger segment of our 35+ demo. Not nearly as bad as "Music for the (nearly) dead," oops, "Music of your life," but a reason for people to tune back to "Boss 100," where a lot of our listeners are migrating from. I'm 64, I like Doo-Wop, my wife is 8 years younger and she, like many others under 60, reach for the dial when they hear it.

Is your wife enjoying her new dress? I figure that if that's all you had to buy for her, after revealing her age to the world wide web, you're a lucky man indeed!

  22. Wayne Davidson did the structural analysis for modification of the two 970 AM towers at Sylvan, and the short "aux" tower.

To my knowledge he has only had one tower fail, which was in Hawaii. It failed during a storm when the roof of the transmitter building blew off and crashed into the tower!

  23. I drove through Waldport and Newport yesterday, and spent some time listening to 820 "The Crab" KORC. The format is a mixture of Classic Hits along with some more recent Triple A titles. Sounded great!

  24. We filed for the building permit with the county for the increase in tower height two weeks ago, since it's an "alteration" application it might move quickly though the system... or not. Two months or two years, time will tell.

Been a CBS affiliate for about two weeks. I expeced an afternoon of work getting the sat dish pointed, but got lucky, took a SWAG at it, and nailed it first try! Fifteen minutes from start to finish, and ten of those were proving I nailed it first try. Skill? Dumb Luck? Probably the latter, I've always had good luck find the birds.

So far I'm very pleased with Simian and Natural Log. A lot of work to get things optimized, but good manuals and good support.

  26. Lincster, I used to live in the area, and my parents still do. I got my start in the business as a volunteer statistician and analyst for basketball and football, working with former owner, Matt Jarvis. I talked to Larry(former owner) about doing play by play and he said if I wanted to do it, I would have to do it on my own, find my own sponsors, and couldn't take any that were already airing ads. The only areas I do not have training in are sales, and technical, but would be willing to do both to help make it work. I know high school play by play would work perfectly in Waldport, and would like the opportunity again to be The Voice of The Irish. I know when Matt was doing games, he didn't seem to have much problems finding sponsors. Larry's problem was he wanted a community radio station that didn't involve the community and in small market radio, high school sports is a great way to do that. Not doing so alienates the customers of sponsors, and most small market sponsors are willing to sponsor high school play by play also. I have an e-mail address in my profile if you would be interested in having me come on board. Currently I am a volunteer analyst for the Hillsboro Spartans on hssnn.com I would love to get back in full-time. That has been my passion since high school, and would do anything(including sales if trained) to make it happen. Thank you for your time.

  29. We'd be streaming now if the web developer had installed the Abacast plug-in correctly! Last time I'll use Perrystar Media (Portland).

  30. I was over in Florence, yesterday morning, and enjoyed listening to 820 The Crab's morning show, and all the music. Now if only there was some way to increase 820's coverage area, that would be great.
