If all goes according to plan, KOIN will conclude its analog transmission Saturday morning with a replay of the KOIN-TV 25th anniversary show (hosted by Ray Summers!) that aired in 1978. The Night Light loop will be put out of its misery and the 25th show will start at 7:06:52am. Sign off will be at 7:30am.

My source says Analog KOIN will end Friday night at 7:30PM.

Yeah, it was going to be Friday but a closer look at the Night Light agreement shows 6/27...not 6/26.

Well KOIN will lose it's status as the "display test" station of choice in a lot of thrift stores now.
Was looking for some older gear and all but one store had the TV's off, or playing a DVD on repeat.
Thanks for the sign-off date.

For anyone who cares, after the 25th show and a vintage ID slide, the last thing to air on analog channel 6 will be a slightly out-of-round indian head test pattern at 7:30am...

I taped the KOIN 25th anniversary show, and I have watched about half of it. While it was being broadcast, I took the pleasure--for the last time--of being able to hear the audio portion (while in bed, half asleep) on an old tube table radio, tuned to 87.75 MHz.
I found the show a bit depressing in that it revealed an entire world of locally produced television beyond evening newscasts that Gen-Xers like me would be too young to remember. A the end of the show, the host contemplates what might be found in the KOIN props and sets storage room 25 years in the future (in 2003). I think the answer might have gravely disappointed him. As many of the locally produced KOIN shows were being cancelled in the 1970s, I wonder whether the host and other KOIN personnel realized that they were at the end of an era as they put together that documentary, in 1978.

Aw shucks. I missed it! Can someone put it up on Youtube so we all can see it?

...And I'm located a little bit beyond the KOIN old coverage area...I'd love to see it too!!

Me too! KOIN hasn't been on cable in my area since the late '80s.
Prior to 1982, KOIN was the closest full-time CBS affiliate to Eugene and was seen a lot in my home.

Randy: Didn't you also get KOBI?
Posted on June 27, 2009 - 11:39 PM # -
KOBI was added to cable in 1969 but was half ABC and many of the shows were at weird, shifted times. KOBI was a bit more receivable ota than KOIN though, especially after the low FM band became more heavily populated during the '70s.

I'd also like to see it if someone can find a way to share...

Unfortunately, I do not yet have any way to digitize video, so I cannot help. The best I could do at the moment would be to dub a VHS copy of the program for you.

I'll see if I can find someone to upload it to YouTube.

Spoiler alert: The Indian made an appearance moments before the KOIN VHF transmitter was switched off!

The video's now online! And Ray Summers sounded exactly the same back then.

Fascinating video! Portland radio announcer Art Kirkham chairing the first KOIN tv newscast, the live Jazz combo show at 12 noon, the KOIN weatherman getting doused on air, live. Great vintage video footnotes to Portland broadcasting.

Oh my goodness! This is a treasure. Such memories and some long lost shows. If you listen closely to the old recorded announcer used many times throughout the presentation and the words "This is KOIN-TV Portland" it's Art Linkletter.
