I was tuning around the dial, and I stopped on 680, which is was calling itself "KNBR 1050 AM" on the air. I later checked the station website, which advertises it as "KNBR 680/1050: The Sports Leader."

The callsign of the 1050 signal is actually KTCT, and according to Radio-Locator, the coverage of the 680 signal totally encompasses the coverage area of 1050. Many (but not all shows) are simulcast on both stations. Does anyone know what is happening at that station--are they intending on running both 680 and 1050 in this way indefinitely, or are they just waiting to let the contractual obligations behind some of the shows run out so that they can change formats on one of the two frequencies?

  2. They've been calling 1050 "KNBR 2" for several years and the original intent was a second sports station. Sounds like they've seen better days.

I realize this doesn't completely answer your question.

Strange that they're talking up the 1050 frequency and not the more widespread 680. Who the hell is running some of these broadcast treasures today?

  4. In this case it's Cumulus.

I vaguely remember KNBR getting mentioned on the old board a while back. This does clear up my curiosity about what Cumulus is doing. Thanks.

Sports on 680, such a power signal is a waste. Too bad they can't swap with KCBS and put the news format on 680. Sport can then stay on 1050.

  7. 680 KNBR with a signal so strong you can use a Panasonic battery operated radio with a headphone jack and some small headphones inside the MEMORIAL COLISIEUM for an air monitor. I did this for John Miller ( ESPN play by play MLB) once in 1977 when he was broadcasting a Basketball game over a phone line and didnt have any talk back to listen to the KNBR program.
