Yeah, the "fundraiser" first has to pay off the cost of staging the rally itself (e.g.. Sarah Palin's fee). Any money left over - if there is any - would go to the charity.

Reminds me of the Thousand Trails solicitations I used to get regularly to sell me vacation time shares. "Come by for a free lunch and your complimentary 13" color TV!**"

(**to be preceded by a mandatory two-hour sales pitch)

Let's see how Glenn ends up spinning wounded soldiers to his advantage at his 'non-political' event.

If anything/one is eroding American values it's people like Beck. I don't think there is anyone on the Left or the Right that would agree with what he is saying. This guy is waaaaaaaay out in outer space.

Wounded Warrior will be in the news soon complaining that they were deceived by Beck and company.

I am surprised and shocked at the turnout. 300,000 is the latest estimate by NBC and the arial photos do look to confirm that.

I am very surprised that Murdoch didn't allow live coverage in FOX.

My observations while watching once I found the event on C-SPAN was that of a crowd that didn't always look thrilled or even engaged when certain speakers of their same ethnicities were on stage.

Of course on Monday Beck will claim 3 million attendees and an enormous yet inaccurate donation to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Terrorists had an opportunity to get rid of a lot of stupid yesterday but did not could that mean we are finally victorious in the war on terror?

Rupert Murdoch apparently is not quite the right-wing ideologue some would make him out to be; that would be Roger Ailes. Apparently, in 2008, Murdoch was seriously considering endorsing Barack Obama for president over McCain; when Ailes got wind of that, he rebelled. Ailes, after all, makes millions for Murdoch with Fox, so he has some pull with Murdoch. Of course, Murdoch wound up endorsing McCain.

But, we've seen other Fox pull-backs from the Tea Party people. Sean Hannity had to withdraw from appearing at an event earlier this year as well. So there must be some dissent over there about how close to get to these people. They probably let Beck do it because that so closely identifies with his audience. I guess Fox higher-ups don't want Fox to become "The Tea Party" network.

  17. When Rupert Murdoch dies or become incapacitated Roger Ailes will be out of there in a flash, Murdoch's kids hate the guy. You will see a more moderate Fox News then.

I watched most of the rally on C-Span, and although it wasn't as overtly political as many of us expected, it still had some clearly discernible political goals (leaving aside the obvious pre-eminent goal of advancing Glenn Beck's career). I can identify at least three:

    1. Evangelize the Tea Party and thereby reinvigorate the religious right, by conflating traditional patriotic values and symbols with conservative Christian theology. Indeed, the dominant theme of the rally was that these two concepts are identical and therefore it's impossible to embrace one and not the other. (This, of course, ignores the reality that many of the founders, even those who self-identified as Christian, held complex and/or ambivalent views on religion - hence their insistence on the separation of church and state.)

    2. By doing the above, I believe Beck also was seeking to ingratiate himself - and by extension the Mormon church - with conservative evangelical leaders, and thereby strengthen the political alliance between these two sometimes-acrimonious religious groupings. This effort may prove fruitful if Mitt Romney becomes the Republican nominee for president.

    3. Absolve conservative whites of any lingering sense of responsibility or guilt they may feel over the persistence of racial inequality, by portraying the Tea Party as the true heir to the civil rights movement (or, as Beck himself put it, "reclaiming" that movement). This was done chiefly through repeated, highly elaborate homages to MLK, many of which involved conservative African-American clergy (including Dr. King's niece Alveda, who should be deeply ashamed) and a very provocative video that interspersed images of Tea Party rallies with 1960s civil rights marches. Of course, MLK's political beliefs (far more "socialist" than Obama's, particularly his forceful advocacy of economic justice, organized labor, affirmative action, reparations, and opposition to the Vietnam war) went completely unacknowledged. That's an essential bit of history that "Glenn Beck U." is never going to teach.

    Posted on August 30, 2010 - 02:52 AM #
  19. The "ick" factor of the entire proceeding is incredibly high. (Much like Beck and his show.)

The vast majority of antendees were white, all right wing religious, all low information threshold voters, etc. The President Obama with a Hitler mustache placards were not in as much evidence during this particular shadow Klan rally but a few popped up on C-Span.

The associations Beck and his ilk, with the able assistance of Fox News and the lik, has worked to create between this celebration of ignorance and the civil rights movement are just embarrassing. That he found a handful of notables to help disguise this event was just sad.

What the conserva-loons (here on this board and elsewhere) fail to comprehend is the active vitriol the man engenders has little to anything to do with his stated political affiliations and everything to do with the fact he's an idiot.

Defined in part as: Adhering to provably untrue beliefs in the face of contrary fact while at the same time distoring information for personal or political gain. Beck is a toadstool.

If you are curious about the demographic breakdown of the participants in the Million Man March on October 16, 1995, here is a University of Michigan study:

"The Million Man Marchers tended to be more middle-aged, have higher levels of education, and higher incomes than black men in general. One out of three (33%) marchers were aged 18-30, 42% were 30-44, 20% were 41-60, and 4% were 61 years of age or older.

Only 5% of the marchers had less than a high school education, 22% were high school graduates, 59% had some college or were college graduates and 14% had some post graduate education.

Only 10% of the respondents reported that their 1994 family incomes were $14,999 or less. Sixteen percent of respondents had family incomes between $15,000 and $29,999, 33% had incomes between $30,000 and $49,999, 17% had incomes between $50,000 and $74,999, 11% had incomes between $75,000 and $99,999 and 8% had family incomes of $100,000 or more.

Consistent with the higher levels of income and education, eight of ten of the marchers was registered to vote. One out of four respondents worked for local, state or the federal government. In addition, four out of ten respondents (42%) were married and another 46% were single. One out of ten respondents were divorced (10%) and 1% were widowed.

Three of ten participants (29%) indicated that the most important reason that they participated in the Million Man March was to show support for black families, 25% stated to show support for black men taking more responsibility for their families and communities, 25% to demonstrate black unity, and 7% stated to demonstrate African American economic strength.

Many participants went to the march with family and friends. There were many instances of siblings, fathers with their young children, and fathers with their adult children attending the march. Findings from the survey indicated that 44% of the marchers had other members of their families participate in the march."

Do you think that only 5% of the Glenn Beck crowd had less than a high school education? Do you believe that over 73% of his faithful followers went to college? Do you suppose that 8 in 10 members of his ugly mob were registered to vote?

If so, I can get you a really deep discount on the Burnside Bridge.

Glenn Beck is not an idiot. That's what makes him dangerous.

I was disappointed not to see more white people at the real civil rights rally, although the crowd was certainly much more diverse than the one at Beck's. Yes, Al Sharpton is a deeply flawed leader, but unlike Beck he kept a low profile at his event (he didn't even host it himself). The speakers were thoughtful and focused on real issues rather than posturing and cheap sentimentality. I wish I could have attended.

  29. Here you go, Broadway. Be outraged at this: (courtesy of Justin Elliot of Salon)

A bigoted pastor who has assailed gays and Muslims is launching the "9-11 Christian Center at Ground Zero" a mere two blocks from the World Trade Center site this Sunday, but so far the project hasn't drawn a peep of protest from those who are outraged by the "ground zero mosque."

Pastor Bill Keller of Florida said today he will begin preaching Sunday at the Marriott at 85 West Street (see proximity to ground zero here). A weekly service is planned at the hotel until the $8 million 9/11 Christian Center finds a permanent space. (Fundraising is going well, Keller told Salon today.)

To get a sense of where Keller is coming from, consider his project's website, which calls Islam a religion of "hate and death" whose adherents will go to hell. It also says: "Islam is a wonderful religion... for PEDOPHILES!"

Keller is the same pastor who hosted a birther infomercial that encouraged viewers to send him and a partner donations to advance the birther cause. His Internet ministry explicitly calls President Obama the new Hitler. He calls homosexuality a perversion. And in 2008, he targeted presidential contender Mitt Romney for being Mormon with a campaign called "voting for Satan."

In short, if critics of the Park51 Islamic community center, which is explicitly welcoming of all faiths, truly believe that there is a "zone of solemnity" around ground zero (as Gov. Pat Quinn put it), they should be horrified at Keller's 9/11 Christian Center.

Ditto for those who believe that religious leaders should not build "deliberately provocative" projects around ground zero, as another mosque opponent put it.

(An enterprising reporter could no doubt find some Sept. 11 families who are offended by Keller's project, just as an enterprising reporter did in the beginning of the Park51 controversy.)

And if there was ever a case of insensitivity to Sept. 11 -- another frequent argument of the anti-mosque crowd -- consider the fact that Keller has a history of seeking to profit from his various projects (one, called Gold for Souls, involved telling people to simply mail him their gold and jewelry). The 9-11 Christian Center appears to be no different. The project's website features a prominent link telling viewers to "Earn $$$ - Click Here!" It goes to a letter from Keller offering people a 10 percent referral cut on donations from their friends to the 9/11 Christian Center.

To be perfectly clear, Keller should be permitted to build anything he wants as long as it's legal.

But the only logic by which Keller's project would not be horrifying to those who oppose Park51 is if they believe all Muslims, including the progressive Muslim Americans behind Park51, should be treated as suspicious or even in the same category as the Sept. 11 terrorists. If mosque opponents' concerns are truly about sensitivity to the neighborhood around ground zero -- and not about Muslims -- we'll hear them denounce Keller loudly in the coming days.

Beck and his ilk are right in line with this fella.

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin Are Restoring Dishonor to America

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are constantly talking about restoring our Constitution. They want to get our Constitution back. I did not know that it had gone away. They have created this aura that since Barack Obama was inaugurated somehow our Forefathers have been affronted. Aside from the crazies who claim that President Obama was born in Kenya and is not a citizen, and therefore sits in the presidency in violation of the Constitution, I am at a loss to know what it is they are talking about. Other than the health care legislation, which faces a legitimate challenge on the basis that it requires all citizens to buy insurance and does not come within the power of Congress to tax, I know of no other claim, no less a legitimate one, that the current administration has violated the Constitution.

What I find remarkable is the suggestion that the President's agenda (whether successful or not) of caring for the poor, the sick, the elderly, the uneducated and the unemployed has somehow dishonored the country and poses a danger to it. Apparently in the eyes of Glenn Beck these "socialistic" goals are un-Christian and are to be feared. I do not pretend to be an expert on the Bible, but I thought those precepts were the very foundation of Christianity. Do they become less so because they are provided by the government?

There will be strong disagreement over the size of the crowd which attended the Beck rally and who or what brought them there. Without impugning those who attended, the greater the size of the crowd; the greater should be our fear------not the phony one he has created. They have been convinced that there is a danger out there that does not exist. If our honor was lost, it was through the invasion of Iraq, wire tapping of American citizens, the torture and rendition of suspected terrorists, imprisoning persons for years without charges or hearings, allowing greed to prevail over regulation and our woeful response to Hurricane Katrina. If those were the good old days for which Mr. Beck and Ms. Palin yearn, then he is right, we all should start praying.

What's wrong is, first of all, an unbiased estimate of the number of attendees was less than 100,000 not 500,000. Second, no one has yet explained exactly what "honor" these people hope to "restore." What hideous thing has Barack Obama done that is so unacceptable? If he doubled the national debt, would you be upset? (Bush doubled it; Reagan tripled it.) Why did you suddenly become worried about out-of-control spending on January 20, 2009, when it has been going on for decades under mostly Republicans?

And which "God" were these people out campaigning for? It seems that some "Gods" aren't acceptable to them.

(And how does the poster know everyone at the Beck rally was sober?)

Glen Beck and his half truths are very threatening to America. They undermine what great Americans like Washington, Lincoln and King did. Beck's actions and words rip away at the very fiber that make America what it is. He plants a seed of lies and misconception in the minds of his minions and they follow his every word like the Moonies and Manson's gang did.

The funny thing to me is, as a radio guy, Glenn is doing what all radio guys (gals) dream of: having a HUMONGOUS audience. So, either everyone here is seriously jealous, or better yet, by trying SO HARD to dismiss this event and Beck himself, you just can't stop talking about him. How funny!
