"No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises," the bill, A. 10129 , states in part.

The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz , D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation."

It just doesn't end does it. The Dems want to control everything in our lives.

Deane, if I tried to post here for every nutty idea proposed by a Republican politician, my hard drive will fill up and my computer would crash before I could finish. It's easy to cherry pick one or two nutty ideas and pin them on the whole party, isn't it?

  3. It's the Democrat thinking that alarms me. Government knows best. Not.

  5. Personally, I don't think it's such a bad idea. Why shouldn't the consumer have the choice on how much salt, if any, is on his/her food? My wife never puts salt when she cooks, but there is a salt shaker handy if I want some.
It's freedom at it's best, let the consumer choose, not chef. Three cheers to Assemblyman Felix Ortiz , D-Brooklyn.

"Why shouldn't the consumer have the choice on how much salt, if any, is on his/her food?"

Actually they already do. All they have to do is ask for their food to be cooked with no salt.

I do it all the time when I order french fries so they have to make them fresh! Then I salt the hell out of them!

In addition to that, any chef worth their salt (pun intended!) knows that there is a taste difference between some foods salted as they are prepared versus salting after cooking.

My take is it's not of the governments place to tell me what I can and cannot eat. It is OK for them to educate me on what is good for me and what isn't, but not to legislate what I can eat.

In this case, I'd put extra salt just to piss them off!

Please show me where this is being done in this case, Skybill. You may be able to get your fries without salt, but they are not provided by a chef. If you have watched any cooking show, you know one of the first ingredients they put in is salt.

In this case they are not telling me I can't eat salt, they are trying to tell the chefs not to put salt in the food when they cook it which in effect is "don't eat salt"

They need to stay out of the kitchen.

I have heard that in NJ you can't order a fried egg with a runny yolk or sunny side up. They have to cook the yolk hard. I'd send it right back.

When I make eggs, if I break a yolk, the egg goes into the dog’s dish!

If they are so interested in everybody's health, then outlaw cigarettes. Oh wait, the tobacco industry contributes lots of money and the taxes on the cancer sticks is real high...Scratch that idea.

Gotta go make dinner...BLT's. Mmmmm nitrates!

No way Jose. Salt is bad for you, all the legislation says is that the consumer gets to choose how much salt he/she wants.

  10. Salt is essential for living. Look it up; the salinity of your bodily fluids almost exactly matches that of the sea. Too much salt is bad for you. That being said, this bill is pretty ridiculous, but it wouldn't take much of a Google search to find a whole boatload of retarded bills being sponsored by fine members of the GOP.

"...Too much salt is bad for you..."

Too much of anything is bad for you.

"... but it wouldn't take much of a Google search to find a whole boatload of retarded bills being sponsored by fine members of the GOP."

It was a Democrat that introduced this bill.

  12. Well, isn't that fun?

There are almost NO foods that cannot be properly prepared in a no-salt environment, and almost none that cannot be seasoned properly after preparation.

Seems to me, I can easily deal with the salt regulation problem a whole lot easier than I can a bad economy that denies me the trip out in the first place, which is what "no control of our lives" Republicans brought us.

For a bit of perspective, I can look at this proposed legislation and just laugh. I can laugh whether or not it passes.

It's a whole lot harder to laugh at the trillions, dead people, jobs outsourced, environment trashed legislation from those Republicans, who believe that Big Bucks Bob gets to fuck us, and our kids, for a quick buck today.

Non issue. If it passes, then you put some salt on the food, and if somebody really is pissed about it, run it through SCOTUS and get a salt decision. Big fucking deal.

With Democrats running things, you've got a shot at being able to afford both the trip to the establishment for that nice, healthy meal, and if you put too damn much salt on your food, the doctor bill that goes along with that.

If you vote in more Progressive Democrats, you probably will see a better shot at a job that actually pays enough to retire on, giving you the luxury of fighting over Social Security too.

  13. Dr. Oz:

Salt is the single biggest preventable reason for high blood pressure. When salt is consumed, it activates the same part of the brain as cocaine and heroin addiction. The recommended maximum daily intake of salt for a healthy individual is 2,300 mg; if youre consuming more than that, you are putting yourself at risk for hypertension, vascular and cardiac damage, and obesity in addition to high blood pressure.

  14. "Seems to me, I can easily deal with the salt regulation problem "

Why should you have to? It's just more government involved in controlling every aspect of your life.

Under the feeble excuses I read above, the government should regulate how many calories you eat per day since we know overweight is more harmful than salt.

  16. Yeah, there's nothing better than getting your medical advice from a guy on TV.
Hey, Deano...I can read, I know this stupid bill came from a Dem. Do we really need to track down the stupid bills from GOP sponsors?

I say go ahead NY go this route and it only makes Portland look even better as America's culinary/restaurant capital of the US. No wonder the NY media is always writing about how Portland is such a great foodie city nearly every month these days.
