  1. Since this is primarily a Portland radio board. I never wanted to start threads individually for every Eugene announcement. I would search out old Eugene threads but sometimes the headers were not what I was really posting about. Thought I would start an over all thread where anyone can post what they've heard in Eugene. I'll start it now:

    This from All Access:

    --------------------------------------Maverick Joins KEHK For Afternoons--------------------------------------

CUMULUS Hot AC KEHK (STAR 102.3)/EUGENE, OR names former KFYV (LIVE 105)/OXNARD-VENTURA, CA APD/MD/afternoon guy MAVERICK for afternoon drive.

MAVERICK's experience includes close to 30 years in radio working in the LOS ANGELES, PHOENIX, DENVER, SACRAMENTO, VENTURA, SANTA BARBARA and MONTEREY markets.

According to KEHK OM AL SCOTT, "I can’t wait to get MAVERICK in the building and get him on the air! I’ve always been impressed with his work on the air and can’t wait to unleash him on our listeners."

MAVERICK added, "This is going to be exciting for me to continue working with CUMULUS, and to be able to work with AL SCOTT...who is also a MONTEREY radio alumni."

  2. "Star 102.3" needs serious help. Hopefully they'll give Maverick some programming duties too. For the last few years it's been a question of whether it's an AC, Hot AC, or a Bob/Jack.

    Posted on April 16, 2010 - 12:16 AM #
  3. Yes, the station needs serious help! It should be a pure Hot AC format, which would mean doing away with the John Tesh radio show, which plays Soft AC music. "Star 102.3" recently added Elvis Duran in the morning, which is syndicated for Hot AC and CHR stations. Elvis Duran originates from New York's Z100.

The John Tesh show doesn't play any kind of music. It is a voicetrack program only...the music is up to the local programmer.

Maverick may want to work with Al Scott again, but anyone who says anything positive about Cumulus right now is blowing smoke. Anything Clear Channel may have done to it's employees is pale by example of what Cumulus has allegedly done and is continuing to do. They are in a lawsuit with some of them for back pay owed. I am told that experienced sales people are being treated poorly and then fired so commissions don't have to be paid. Regardless of what you may hear, in my opinion, no one in their right mind should go to work for Cumulus.

Chico is correct, Tesh allows for individual music programming. However, the style of the show best fits with mainstream and/or light AC, or Oldies.

  7. ...anyone who says anything positive about Cumulus right now is probably happy to have employment.

Jobs are available in the overall job market and overall economy right now–for those willing to work for those companies. Many years ago, I was royally screwed, and was young enough that if I quit and/or complained I would've been virtually unemployable. I don't like what's going on right now either, however we're in a total employer's market.

Thanks, Paul- you are right- the Tesh show would work best on those mellower formats. He is on evenings here in Seattle on Star 101.5, though how one would characterize Star is a matter of some debate. Hot AC/ Personality would be close. The Tesh show doesn't quite fit the music up here, but it's not too far off the mark, either.

    Posted on April 18, 2010 - 10:43 PM #
  9. Star 102.3 uses the John Tesh satellite feed which features Soft AC music programmed by the syndicator. If Cumulus was smart, they would use the voice-tracked option, and program their own Hot AC music into the show.

  10. Eugene had a nice little DX window (5/4) between 9 and 10 PM. FM stations from Albuquerque, Farmington, and Gallup were booming in with great clarity.

  21. 101.5 KFLY and 104.7 KDUK have been off the air since 4:30 in the afternoon. It's nice being able to listen to 104.3 KKMX and 105.1 KRSK in Eugene, without KDUK's nasty splatter.

Since June 8th, 2001, 104.7 KDUK's transmitter has been putting out RF spurs on 104.4 and 105.0 MHz, which severely messes up reception of 105.1 KRSK (on the more wide FM tuners) in Albany, Corvallis, Eugene, etc.

101.5 KFLY's transmitter has never put out any RF spurs, and I sure wish the engineers would fix KDUK's transmitter.

Eugene radio stations are boring. Cumulus are the worst radio station group in Eugene. Can they fixed STAR 102.3 FM music and bring back Country music on 95.3 FM.

    Posted on September 28, 2010 - 09:19 PM #
  27. Cumulus takes radio stations and trashes them. "The Score" should have stayed on 1320, and 95.3 should have a music format. 102.3 should be Hot AC or Adult CHR.

  32. I have noticed that KNRQ still has a CP for Tualatin,3.7kW. I noticed also that there is one for Aloha also for KNRQ. When this does happen what will happen with NRQ in Eugene ? My opinion....blow up 102.3 and put NRQ there. Remove sports from 95.3 and put a classic leaning country.

    Just my opinion.

Since it involves a rule making procedure, my guess is that the construction permit will be built out before the application is granted, what with time running out on the CP. When you say, "classic leaning", do you mean "Garth Brooks" or "Ernest Tubbs"? If it's the latter, it's a recipe for failure.

    Posted on November 1, 2010 - 04:55 PM #
  34. Exradiodude was thinking Garth Brooks, and the kind of format 95.3 had as "The Moose" from 2004 to 2009. They played contemporary Country, along with a few older songs from Patsy Cline, Bellamy Brothers, Rosanne Cash, Hank Williams, Jr., etc.

  35. This from All Access:

OREGON PUBLIC BROADCASTING is swapping the construction permit for KQDL/HINES, OR to CALVARY CHAPEL OF TWIN FALLS, INC. and $3,000 for FM translator K252DL/WALTON, OR.

    Walton is west of Eugene.

    Posted on November 15, 2010 - 08:17 AM #
  36. K252DL currently has a CP to move from 98.3 to 95.7 at the same Walton location, raising power from 8 to 10 watts. I expect OPB to move to Eugene.

Off the subject....but I rind that Eugene radio stations are boring these days compare to 10 years ago. Back then, they had a personality driven from Classic Rock to Top-40. Right now, its just voice track and their music selections are very repetitive or boring. What do you think?
Only 3 radio groups are representative in the Eugene Market.

    McKienzie Broadcasting.

e_dawg...thanks for that post. I was with KDUK/KODZ ten years ago. It is nice that someone remembers that we did (or atleast tried) to do radio right back then. Certainly, the ratings proved it, but I lament the fact that this effort seems to be forgotten and/or not important today. Eugene is still a vibrant market with potentially high revenue. I'll leave it there.

  43. I think true fun and exciting radio goes back to the late 60's and 70's with the boss jock format and all the fantastic original promotions.

It was the wild west of radio programing. Just watch WKRP re-runs.

Turkey drops from the sky, money drops from skyscrapers, wet bikini contests, treasure hunts,'s all gone now.

Each decade has become more liability conscious, cheap, watered down, and boring.

I'm sure it will be K-Love. This should free up some translators that will probably be sold.

  49. Moving 103.7 to Eugene, was what they should have done from day one. Since a C0 in Eugene is worth big bucks, I would expect EMF to work out a deal to swap 103.7 for one of the weaker Eugene FM's.

Cumulus could end up buying 103.7, and EMF could purchase the C3 at 97.7, moving in from the Coast.

    Posted on March 8, 2011 - 02:20 AM #
  50. I don't see them selling any translators. 90.7 is being totally hammered by HD noise from KWAX (91.1) and should be shut off altogether, but probably won't be. 107.3 is first-adjacent to their 107.1 and isn't any good for anyone else. That leaves 100.9 which could be moved to Coburg ridge to relay Air 1 into Springfield where they've never had a decent signal.
