Problem with the Emerson show:
Emerson's AM show was all about connectivity with the audience. Entertaining the audience was number one and everything else came second. He'd go for an hour without taking a spot break, he'd actually TALK to the listener instead of spouting formatics, he took Lord knows how many calls.
Now, he's got a very small window in which to talk, half the time he's having to pitch concerts . . . Even the podcasts are getting unbearable.
It's not his fault and it's not Patyk's fault either. That show just does not fit during Am morning drive on a music station. It's appointment listening for a specific audience.

I think that I have to agree with 541to503. I really have not listened to much since KUFO, but I know what goes on the show. AM show was great. I do believe that it was all about the audience on AM, and as expected, (sort of) if you want an FM morning show, you might have to alter your show to fit in. It might fit in for the KUFO audience but the previous AM show listeners do not get what they really want, they just get the typical morning show crap. Still, despite being a show that I really have no interest in much anymore, Rick is still ONE of the best AM show hosts!

I can't find it in the podcast. Rick suggested blowing up a bunch of pumpkins on the show after Halloween without telling the station, asking, "What's the worst that could happen?" Greg Nibler then said something to the effect of them all getting fired, about which Rick professed complete ignorance.
On the other hand, Rick is making post-Halloween show plans.

KUFO Program Director Chris Patyk, the guy that moved Emerson to FM was fired today. Word is that Dave Milan is the new guy. What does that mean for Emerson? Will we get him back on AM? That would make my day.

I can confirm that Patyk is no longer at Alpha. Also, as has already been reported, host Michael Ricker's last day at KISW ("The Rock of Seattle") will be this Friday. Beyond that, I'm not ready to confirm anything.

So you've hired a PD with no PD experience. You're blowing out a morning show that's been turned over 3 times in the past 4 years. You're replacing them with an afternoon talent from KISW. (who just happened to work together)
You're going to do this in PPM, where the stakes are much higher (You're up for renewal every song, not every week.) and the margin for error is much smaller.
You're going to turn a rock station with a brain, the perfect compliment to a city such as Portland into a T&A low-brow rawk machine.
Yeah, they're fucked. Good luck with that guys.

From the snippet on AllAccess.com, your comment re: Ditch having no previous PD experience appears to be correct. Which, if true, does seem a little odd. That said, one would have to assume Larry Wilson and his new managment team for the Portland properties have a plan. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Re: the morning show, with apologies to the (many) Emerson fans on this on-line board, he's never had ratings success. The program's recent history was marginal on AM radio and has been an unmitigated disaster on FM. I'm sorry, but that's just the reality. An AMD show change on KUFO is long overdue.
As for the fears and criticism of turning a "rock station with a brain", "the perfect complement to Portland" into a "T&A rawk" station is absurd.
If it were perfect for Portland it would be working. I'm not slamming your liking what they may be currently doing. I'm not even taking exception to your idea that an "intelligent" rock station (whatever that means) is the way to go for Portland. You're entitled to that opinion. I'm only pointing out that KUFO is broken. That's inarguable.
Keeping things the way they were is not a viable business option.
Expect more changes. And give Alpha Broadcasting a chance to fix it before you preemptively declare it broken.

How is it unsuccessful? The 25-54 breakouts look good for a station that was hemorrhaging talent at a ridiculous rate. CBS is not without fault. Between jettisoning Bozyk, Lisa Wood, and several other talented staffers, the station should be DOING a lot worse considering the fire-sale that happened. The station lost it's night talent, music director/midday guy, afternoon show, overnight person, promotions director and morning show in a span of six months.
I think it's about money.
But then there is the obvious: New guy is cheaper. He'll be pulling an on-air shift. Morning show will be one guy instead of three.

KUFO is a rock station with a brain? REALLY!
My opinion is that if management let Emerson do his thing his way, and let at least one other on-air shift have that same leeway, that then maybe they could become a rock station with a brain.
However I rarely listen to KUFO post Stern so my opinion really doesn't matter because my dial is almost always at the other end of the fm spectrum.

If KUFO gets bad ratings, then something needs to change and I guess the new guy could fire the whole Emerson show, however, that seems like a strange move after Alpha rehired the Emerson show news guy, Tim Riley, back after CBS fired him (one of many fired).
