The rumblings are all over. Details pending. Thought I'd find something on the board here, but nothing yet. Anyone got hot scoops like which staffs will move where, management, etc. Official meeting today at Jake's.

Alpha Picks Up KUPL/KINK/KUFO

In my experience with this type of situation, the GM’s, and SM’s get let go fairly quickly. I wouldn’t be surprised if only one PD was put in charge for the three station’s ( probably form within), and most of the live remaining air talent will be let go. Also, at least one station will probably flip- possibly the AM to a hispanic format.

Since the title of this thread specifically references KUPL, KINK, and KUFO, my question is: will CBS retain ownership of KCMD (970 kHz)? Or will this station be sold to some other party?

I know this is speculation so far, but based on companies like NNW and BiCoastal, along with countless others, WHY is it that the mindset is to cut out the actual communicators. Seems like new owners always continue the failed business model the corps instituted.
Somewhere along the way the people who connected the station to the community were deemed unnecessary profit suckers, and yet, listenership trends down, loyalty is fleeting, and stations rarely create events anymore. I see the argument that "PEOPLE HAVE SO MANY OTHER CHOICES NOW"
Maybe the audience and advertisers are drifting to other choices because the radio option is so mediocre.
The mediocrity stems from BUSINESS DECISIONS from within.
Can't get a premium price for a shoddy product. Can't grow your business if you don't offer anything unique to your competitor.........
Just some thoughts that get rehashed from time to time..........
Bob, your scenario is all too common and the results rarely show anthing more than more of the same. Ever see a station that cleans house, runs a shell of an operation and winds up "best in show?"

My apologies if the answer is somewhere else, but I'm not familiar with Alpha. Doing a Google search came up with http://www.alphabroadcasting.biz/ but it really doesn't look like the kind of company that would buy those stations...

I think the reference to Alpha is Larry Wilson's new company that just purchased KXL and KXTG from Paul Allen.
PORTLAND, OR -- May 12, 2009: Former Citadel Communications owner Larry Wilson is back in radio, as his new Alpha Broadcasting Corp. has agreed to buy News/Talk KXL-AM and Sports KXTG-FM (The Game) in Portland, OR, from Paul Allen's Rose City Radio.
"The purchase of these great facilities is a perfect way for me to reenter the
radio business," said Wilson, who is serving as Alpha's Chairman/CEO. "I look forward to providing the people of Portland with truly compelling radio. One of the key elements of the deal is continuing and building upon the relationships with the Portland Trail Blazers, the Seattle Seahawks, and the University of Oregon Ducks. We will endeavor to be an excellent partner and home for these legendary sports franchises."
Wilson founded Citadel in 1984 and sold it to Forstmann Little in 2001.Posted on July 15, 2009 - 12:17 PM # -
Ah, excellent. That makes a lot more sense. Thank you!

Roger, to answer your question: NO! Radio listenership is down. Radio Sales are down. Music sales are down. Why? Simple. The same “ yes men” bean counters that ruined this business beginning in the late 80’s are still employed and for some reason are still being listened to. Radio IS going the way of the newspaper; albeit at a slower rate, and it’s these bean counters that are to blame. You can’t run a radio station like it’s an insurance office. You have to run it like it’s a Chuck E. Cheeses. Yes, radio is a business- but it supposed to be fun; which is why radio used to be so great and attracted the large amounts of listeners. The vast majority of stations today sound stiff, contrived, and controlled. When was the last time that you heard a listener get excited that a station was about to play “ 30 in a row”, or a “ 40 minute no talk music marathon”? NEVER. The formula for winning radio is simple:
1. Shoot from the gut/hip programming on a local level
2. Jocks that are paid well, that are allowed to do their “ thing”- and are given celebrity status.
3. Have those same jocks ( not JUST the intern promo staff mind you) BE EVERYWHERE! Every concert, event, graduation, game, etc.Why is this so damn hard to understand?

Eugenebob One Word AMEN!!!!!
Posted on July 15, 2009 - 01:11 PM # -
To Eugenebob, I would say Amen, but those DJ's were canned or quit. Many of the current DJ's are the "new school" of being exccessivly lazy. They love using the voice tracking so they can do other things with "their life".
So they have to watch the clock in the corner to fill the time correctly with music and commercials, so the banter is contrived to run exactly to the second with the time they need to fill.
So all of you current DJ's that use voicetracking on Friday's, the weekends, etc. Believe it or not we can tell, and that's why we have gone to Ipods in record numbers. You show no respect to listeners and you deserve what your getting today, no respect.

....providing the people of Portland with truly compelling radio.......
Why? He didn't provide compelling radio when he was a player with Citadel.....
has he learned? Is he a changed man? Has he been "saved"?
Bob, Exactly what I've been saying for years, and there is a large group of believers ready to institute that policy.......................
.....As soon as they let us out of the re-education camps.

uh oh saveit: you said VOICETRACK!! That means Chris will be here ANY minute now!
Seriously though, AMEN to eugenebob.
It ain't that hard. Some CAN still pull it off. Not in Portland though. Possibly Eugene, but it is happening in smaller markets.Posted on July 15, 2009 - 04:35 PM # -
Is it me...or...
this couldnt come fast enough and I hope programming changes what the hell kind of news programming does KXL run...its sometimes not just KXL all news radio goes goofy sometimes...'let's join fox news channel for this late breaking bulletin'...they fumble their way around making no sense, cutting in and out between PIO on scene, and reporter and anchor...FOR CRYING OUT LOUD...IS ANYONE PROFESSIONAL AT ANY FRIGGIN LEVEL ANYMORE!!!
Have someone just read a quick story about the incident ... and join the network when the story has some substance...some body details...
I would love to see crap like this change, do you think with new owners, a degree of professionalism might develop?

I keep hearing radio is dying. It doesn't have to. The problem is, its life is in the hands of people who have lost the plot and have no idea how vital radio is at the local level.
I'd love to be back on the air because I know it's where I can do the best for the community. If only someone with deep enough pockets could hire back all the recently laid off air talent in this town...imagine what kind of a station we'd have!

We've heard this from inside CBS Radio, too. All we can confirm is that there's an announcement tomorrow. (Seriously, that's all we've got. No need to click the link.)

Hello Tara;
I have been a lifelong major league/ pro football fan. One thing I have noticed is that when the boss flips the bill and buys the best- the team CONSISTENTLY wins the World Series/ Superbowl.
Unfortunately, we have owners that believe by cutting their staff- that they are somehow going to win. To put it in prospective; how much sense would it make to cut the right fielder, shortstop, and 3rd baseman, and have the rest of the players make up the difference? It doesn’t. Your former “team” will fail, and right along with that they have lost fans because of your departure. I have heard you before on 94/7 and you are good. VERY good. Hold your head up, and know that another opportunity is right around the corner. The cream of the crop ALWAYS rises to the top.Posted on July 15, 2009 - 08:13 PM # -
Thanks...it's one of those corporate decisions that just makes zero sense. I'd go back tomorrow if they'd have me. But, onward and upward, as they say.

If Alpha picks up KUPL, KCMD, KINK, and KUFO. Will they move their stations into KXL bulding on Bancroft St?

So, the annoucement date has come and gone. What was said? And Where and Who do I send my updated resume to? Remember, it's all about me!

I checked in with my two sources who said there would be an announcement. Nothing happened. Quite frustrating. I now have to reevaluate my "two internal sources = confirmed" idea.
