Something does need to be done.

I know it's asking a lot of the government, but DO IT RIGHT the first time or don't do it at all.

I think it all really is about elections.

The GOP has painted itself into a corner. Obstruction carries a high cost and that cost is having to somehow position the party as being the better one while at the same time being against pretty much anything that would benefit the vast majority of Americans.

The Tea Party was all about mobilizing people around the common distaste for taxes, while at the same time ignoring their social wedge issue positions. Racists, bigots, theocrats, all welcome in that tent, so long as we are all anti-tax.

Worked pretty well too. I saw more elderly people gathering with signs than I had in a long time.

Today the Tea Party is a joke. The caucus hasn't met in forever, and there just isn't that center of mass around the whole thing due to all the ugly associated with it. Remember that cost thing kids.

We have a lot of things needing to get done and the GOP has denied on every front, holding back appointees, filibustering anything meaningful even when it's their own damn legislation, tons of misinformation out there too.

Where do they go from here?

Because many of those people who united around anti-health care, anti-taxes, anti this and that, a positive message, frankly any real reform message that isn't a repackaging of the same failed policy that got us here in the first place, will lose those folks, and since the Democrats more or less own that, it's not too much of a leap to assume they would win with that kind of positioning.

Recently I saw the SAME people holding up anti-Obama, anti-tax, anti this and that signs rallying against that out of control IRS and the "dictator" Obama, who is leading the charge to tyranny.

Each of these scandals will rope in significant factions, and like before, the very ugly social policy stuff will be marginalized "I'll ignore your bigotry, if you ignore my theocracy, maybe we both are racist, but that's OK, because that tyrant Obama has gotta go before he destroys everything!"

Mix it up. People hate the IRS? Link it to Obama. Foreign policy gets scary? Link it to Obama. Who likes the DOJ? Nobody, link it to Obama. And so on.

Hannity has them all on a quick list now, one for each finger and he's working it just like they did health care, only this time it's framed with nationalism, the usual anti messages, and Obama, who just isn't an American President for whatever reason makes sense and that sort of hides the "can't deal with a Black man being in charge"

As for Nixon comparisons, I've seen a few. It's not just here. I think those are all about "both sides do it" the great centrist lie that holds many other little lies together. If it all sucks, you might as well vote for the party that validates your ugly thoughts --all those anti thoughts, because it's getting ugly anyway sort of thing.

But I saw the SAME people. Amazing. I'll bet you they are "Independents" who "lean right" now too. Free thinkers who just happen to vote Republican all the time types. About a quarter of us are there, with some "nothing else matters" issue they keep the candle burning for, because God or Freedom or Liberals.

Give Limbaugh, who just isn't that much fun right now, Hannity who is GREAT entertainment along with Beck and some of the second tier players, a listen and it's all about making as many connections between these things and whatever you hate as possible! Wrap that up into a fuck liberals package and put a shiny GOP bow on top and you have "the package"

Many of us wonder about the GOP split floating around out there. I think it's resolving and when we were writing about that split, we wondered whether or not a faction would form around that new group of independents.

The answer is clear. No. When push comes to shove, defeat the liberals is enough to unify those factions so long as there is one common element, and I think that is a key observation:

Due to how the party works with it's high degree of hate and anti tolerance, they need an enemy. The enemy provides the basis for unification and that unity means votes and the party can move forward and get power.

Bin Laden was great! Not only was he the enemy, but he was an enemy that just about everybody felt strongly about! Al-Queda is still an enemy, but much less prominent now that wars are ending and Obama has been effective at reducing conflict and getting bad guys. He's bagged quite a few with far less collateral damage and cost. Can't have that, so...

Tyranny! Liberals are the enemy, and "big government" which just happens to be big because it has liberals in it, is the enemy too. Notice that big government that doesn't have as many liberals in it is much closer to OK, and isn't it funny how that works?

Bush started the program to give loans to companies like Tesla, who by the way paid theirs back 9 years early. Big government is OK, until it isn't, and it isn't when liberals are in charge.

Taxes are always a great enemy.

The most Orwellian enemy is corruption. It is highly entertaining and somewhat disquieting to see and hear the stupid party rally against corruption, while holding the clear lead in criminal behavior while in office. The GOP has seen more convictions while in office than anybody. More ethics violations. Is anti on disclosure laws, and it goes on and on.

Now you have the summer of scandal. Put it all out there, and the strongest things will resonate, unify and turn into an effective anti-party platform where the primary goal is to defeat the enemy, whatever you think that enemy is.

What about the church in Pasadena, who, after its pastor had included anti-war remarks in a sermon in 2004, was investigated and harassed for 2 years by the IRS. That 2-year long investigation came by Bush's orders.

So far, as much as the right is unwilling to concede, there is no evidence that the current IRS investigation of the Tea Party groups was initiated by anyone on Obama's administration.

Didn't see much outcry over the IRS's strong-arm tactics in back then. Why the difference now?

That bridge over the Skagit River is just north of the Mt. Vernon exit. When we're headed to the San Juan Island ferries (to Friday Harbor and Vancouver Island, B.C.), we usually take the Mt. Vernon exit and then follow the road west from there via LaConner to connect to WA 20 west to the ferry dock near Bremerton. Some 70,000 vehicles a day cross that bridge (built 1955) between Seattle and the Canadian border. There's usually three trips a day on the ferry between Bremerton, Friday Harbor, and Sidney, B.C. (north of Victoria). 20 folks pulled from the 41-degree water last night, 3 to hospital, no fatals. Amazing, considering the main span in both directions is in the water!

This Bridge recieved a 57/100 rating on its last inspection. Average in Wa. State is 80/100. The mark down was mostly for the design of the Bridge relative to the roadway its on. And because of its age.

This will only enhance the CRC, not inhibit the project. The money will come for it. Freeway bridges are designed totally different than anytime before about 1965. Look at the Glen Jackson bridge..

They are looking at installing a temporary span across the damaged portion. Also, looking at just replacing the whole thing right off the bat. Decisions later. It will depend a lot on how the detours work up there. How effective they are. I know one thing ..if you live in Eastern, Wa ..be best to bypass Seattle altogether...and take 97 up to Mt Baker and go over that way.

FWIW..

I don't defend Lois Lerner.
I do defend the targeting of Tea Party groups by the IRS.
I believe they warrant the extra scrutiny.

Lois Lerner says she wasn't involved in the intimidation actions of the IRS, that it was some low-level employees only. Seems that isn't proving to be true. Seems she was directly involved. No wonder she took the 5th.

Oh wow. I lived in Mt. Vernon/Burlington for a year, and I've been across that bridge hundreds of times.

Not sure what they'll do short-term. That puts a serious crimp in the movement of commerce, and it's going to be a clusterfuck. There's only one other bridge that crosses the Skagit River between Mt. Vernon and Burlington (ironically, almost right under the I-5 bridge). Or, they can cross through downtown Mt. Vernon and head west on Hwy. 20 towards Anacortes, and back track.
