Hadn't checked out the "Yaw's Top Notch Workers Unite" facebook page for over a month. Here's something I didn't know until now:

"After ignoring an eviction notice, and bouncing checks last week, the restaurant CLOSED Tuesday Morning without notifying its employees or paying them their final wages."

This from The Craig Adams News Service:

"KOIN-TV is sending good Portland, Oregon jobs to Indiana - and refusing to offer fair severance benefits to 7 NABET-CWA members with 125 years of service to KOIN." That's the assertion of the NABET-CWA - The National Association of Broadcast Employees & Technicians, which it announced in a May 23, 2013 bulletin from Local No. 51. Here is the entire bulletin unedited:

Just when you thought you could trust the people that you had believed in were impervious to selling their credibility for the sake of keeping their job, you have an experience like I have had over the last two months.

On March 14th I spoke to LIN Media's attorney, Ron Allen, who told me they would be hubbing the station at KOIN in 90 days, as they have routinely done at their other stations. Since then, KOIN's General Manager, Tim Perry has shamelessly made repeated efforts to hide or deliberately misrepresent the company's plans, apparently under some corporate pressure and with his own job on the line. More on his desperate misinformation campaign in a moment, but let me first give you the actual chronology of what has transpired behind the scenes:

March 14th -- LIN Media's attorney informs me that KOIN will be Hubbed to "a location in the East" within 90 days and that none of the Master Control Employees will be retained when the changeover takes place. Notification of such a change and bargaining over the "Effects" of the change is required by law and his call was to set a meeting date to begin that process. He stated employees would be given a 30-day notice of their pending termination.

March 18th -- Believing that long term, loyal employees at KOIN deserved as much notice of their termination as possible (not 30 days the company intended), I met with the affected employees to inform them of the devastating news to them and their families.

Almost immediately upon my arrival in Master Control, Tim Perry pulls me out of the meeting to ask what's going on. I asked him if he was aware that his station was going to be hubbed within 90 days and he responded, "No." This is the beginning of what I now believe to be the first of many deliberate falsehoods (being polite to avoid the more-literal term lies) which I now believe he was pressured to tell me and any KOIN employees that he could attempt to falsely persuade.

The following day on March 19th, the damage control begins as Tim Perry calls a meeting of all of the Master Control Operators to tell them how the Company hasn't yet decided to hub the station. He acknowledges that the KOIN lawyer wants to meet with the Union to discuss the "effects" hubbing would have on employees and to address "what the Union would want." He correctly stated that this legally mandated "effects bargaining" would take place April 30th. His statements are contradictory and only expose his true motives to continue to mislead the staff. How could there be any need for the April 30 meeting to discuss effects of a decision that he wrongfully insists has yet to be made?

He goes on to describe how he has known me as the Union's President for 10 years but "doesn't know what's gotten into me." After he is done with the personal attack, he begins trying to explain how hard he has personally worked to keep his Master Control Employees, saying he "wants KOIN to be the hub and not be hubbed" by other employees at another location. He repeatedly insists that the decision hasn't actually yet been made. He explains that if I don't mend the Union's relationship with the station, he's worried the scheduled meeting will not go well for employees. He goes on to say how upset he is that information that I released at the station is, "scaring all of us" and "what a terrible thing to do to master control employees, not knowing if you will have a job in 90 days".

When an employee in the meeting asks how much notice employees will get if the station is hubbed, no answer is given. When Tim is asked if it is possible that Corporate is "double talking him" he responds something to the effect that it may be possible, but immediately defends the company, saying yet again that no decision has been made, again repeating the lie. When Rick Brown is asked if any equipment has been ordered he shakes his head - no.

Knowing that the story will unravel soon, Tim tells salespeople he wants KOIN to be the hub for other stations. His intent seems to be to shore up their concerns that they too may need to find another job after the station is hubbed because of the difficulty in selling spots for hubbed stations. He goes on to express his feeling about how terrible it is that the bad union representative told people they would be out of a job soon. Some salespeople soon express how terrible it is that the Union would upset people like this, completely unaware of the context you are now reading here.

April 30th meeting - The truth is finally unveiled by LIN Media attorneys. When asked if the decision has actually been made to hub the station, one company attorney responds that the company's "intention" to hub or their "decision" to hub is really just a question of semantics. Quickly, another LIN attorney then candidly admitted that the decision to hub KOIN was made back "in the Winter" and they are there to now bargain the effects of that decision. Finally the truth!! The rest of that meeting was spent exchanging proposals on the effects of the decision to hub the station. Sadly, the LIN Media proposals start and stay low in terms of what the departing workers will receive upon their termination. The Union proposed severance, retraining, job relocation to another LIN station, extended company paid health care and a few other benefits. No agreement was reached at this meeting.

The Union has since asked the company for additional information that would be helpful to the negotiations. The company has denied most of the requests saying they were not relevant. We have since learned that in at least one LIN station where the station was hubbed, the company agreed to pay one year of severance for long term employees, twice as much as what is currently being proposed by LIN for KOIN employees.

So now you have the actual facts of the story and not the spin. The Union is very disappointed that the "relationship" has been forced off the track by the Company's intent to withhold information so important to loyal employees and their families, not to mention the Company's efforts to mislead and deliberately misrepresent the truth. The Company still says it can't tell us how soon Master Control Employees will be terminated, but that fiber is expected to be installed in the coming week and that they would be hubbing very soon after that. They continue to pitch that if their proposal isn't accepted by the end of May, employees will receive much less than they are "offering" and that would be a shame, the "spin" goes.

We are extremely disappointed that KOIN employees can expect more of this disrespect for their hard work and years of dedication. It is also sad that you may expect the Company to continue to mislead you with its best efforts to make the Union the excuse for its decision to outsource these jobs to a non-union, right-to-work-for-less state like Indiana where workers do not benefit from the good wages and other benefits negotiated over many years by union representation. The Union will keep you apprised as these important negotiations continue.

In the meantime, with bargaining beginning on June 6th and 7th, we need to let management know that we support the Master Control Operators and we are not going to just sit by and silently watch seven of our loyal co-workers with a combined 125 years of service go out the door without a settlement that is just and fair to them and their families. We are going to wear our red shirts every Thursday without fail. Your Bargaining Committee of Kathleen and Douglas are counting on you to respond to the survey you just received and give them feedback as to what you want addressed in the upcoming negotiations of the new contract.

The fight will not be easy, but together - with our resolve - we will make a difference in the outcome of these negotiations!!

The guy I heard interviewed on NWCN who was directly in front of the truck that hit the bridge said that he heard the escort car's "height pole" (Not sure what the real name for it is) hitting the bridge structure.

He also stated that had the truck been in the center lane there would not have been a clearance problem.

Wow, now THIS is INTERESTING.Justin Bieber makes house guests sign waiver to party with him and face $5m lawsuit if they break it. I guess he is not the only celebrity that makes guests sign a waiver before before entering his mansion. Actually this is not a bad idea. But how will he hold people accountable?Lets say for instance, Someone takes a picture of Bieber snorting a line of Coke off a girl's ass, then leaks it to the press. How will he find out who exactly took the picture and leaked it to the press.

Modern height clearance (for bridges/overpasses) is at least 15 feet. Semi-trailers are 13.6 feet. Truckers pulling oversize (height) loads must be aware of this and route around them. One of the most notable example is a notorious overpass above I-5 in Chehalis (about 1/2 mile south of WalMart) -- I forget how low it was, but if you noticed, quite a few trucks took that exit, then got back on the freeway again -- it was to avoid going under it. More than a few did it just to avoid the risk of denting their shiny smokestacks.

I believe that particular overpass was recently raised or rebuilt.

One has to get a permit for oversized loads and in Oregon, you sign for a map with low clearance areas along the route highlighted in orange. I'm sure Washington does the same.

The trucker from Alberta is in deep doo-doo.

I will say this: Taylor Swift does have good songwriting talents, good singer, projects herself onstage/TV very well. She won 8 of a possible 11 Billboard awards the other night. Bieber? I don't get his appeal. Esperanza Spalding cleaned his clock at the Grammys a couple of years ago, and Bieber's still trying to figure out why he didn't win that Best New Artist award. Bruno Mars, ditto. Saw his picture on the Rose Garden Arena marquee the other day. Looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Terrible photo.

Agreed, edust. We need to spend sensibily, but infrastructure is high on my list. It creates jobs, too. Infrastructure in other parts of the world seem less important to me.

This event is just the tip of the iceberg. We, as a society, in the U.S. have been mining the infrastructure that our parents were willing, gratefully, to tax themselves to build. Now that infrastructure that should have been replaced or upgraded to current structural and functional standards is failing. It is bridges, water systems, sewer systems, electrical systems, amongst many. I suspect that it will take many, many more events before the anti-tax folks get the message that there is no free ride...

Perhaps we should stop blaming Bush, Obama, or the truck driver. Perhaps we should blame the bridge. This is insightful.
