Well, that response certainly was mature. You sort of started to get a point going, but you blew any marginal chance you may have had by writing your last few "sentences". Why don't you log off for a few years, then return when you've grown up a bit and actually something useful (read: intelligent) to say?

Well, it's not the first time I've heard it referred to as "diarrhea of the mouth", but I think that over-simplifies. I came in at the tail end of that style, and I have great respect for those that can do it - it's actually as hard as hell to keep up an intelligible AND entertaining patter, without sounding like a complete goof! Besides, you have to remember that they were (a) trying to appeal to the "youth" crowd, who were for the first time the primary consumers of recorded music, and (b) trying as hard as they could to NOT sound like the "studio" announcers of the period. ("This is either the Blue Network or the Red Network of the National Broadcasting Company - at the tone, the time will be twelve o'clock.")

By contrast, if you have a whole studio full of sound effects carts, a producer and a couple of "sidekicks", it's a lot easier to create an entertaining show. Of course, by the same contrast, it's also easier to create a mess that nobody wants to listen to! Again, talent will float to the surface, no matter what medium you put it into!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Jokes on you motozak, I hate this town more than you. You want me to point out what's wrong with this town? I would gladly do it: crappy freeway system, ungodly high income tax, idiot string of mayor's, elitist attitude, boiling over with hypocrisy. Let's all hop in our vanilla Outback or Prius complete with "Keep Portland Weird" and Obama bumper sticker. Town full of fail, we have a crap basketball team, have chased away the business district, been over-run by tubby couve-ites (yeah, you really need a 12,000 sq ft house lard-o), maze of bike pathes and yet no one seems to be able to ride in them correctly, and radio community that is bland and predictable. How's that motozak.. Oh did I just blow your mind, because you thought you bested me.. oh boo-hoo hoo, I am so pwned by a big shot.. oopsy, I think I crapped my diaper.

I believe Mr. Johnson is focused on alternatives to driving. I don't think one is going to plan an entire retirement around a C-Tran schedule. Clark county is out of the picture unless Mr. Johnson plans to run for Governor of Oregon one day.

Folks, seriously, I'm an almost lifelong Portlander (and native Oregonian), yet Vancouver, WA, is my second favorite city. I've done some volunteer work in Vancouver and everyone I've talked to who's retired to Clark Co. says essentially the same thing; their expenses are lower, they get more livability for their money (vitally important when you're on a fixed income), no state government taxes their retirement benefits, and other overall taxes are lower than the Seattle/Tacoma Metro Area. And, when you're retired, if you watch things closely you don't have to worry about the unemployment rate AND you have time to make the community a better place if you wish.

Also, C-TRAN is a MUCH better system than critics and pundits make it out to be.

There was a Portland Tribune article a few weeks ago that discussed people who've moved to Vancouver and are very happy with their decision (despite raising children and working in Oregon, who taxes their Oregon income and doesn't let them vote on tax measures).

@edawg--

Let up on your caps lock key. My ears are already ringing as it is.....

"thetruth" recently interjected:

"
Yes.. keep encouraging people to live in Vancouver and mooch of those of us who actually live in Portland. God, I hope they make the new bridge a toll bridge. I wish Couve-ites would work in their own downtown--oh wait, all that is there is people who want to throw acid in your face.

Go Vancouver, it's your birthday...

My vote for Governor is someone who will enact a sales tax, and lower my property tax, F-U Vancouver.
"

Reads as though somebody's a bit jealous.......

Another clueless type who's obviously blind to the fact that sales tax avoidance is *not the only reason* Vancouverites shop in Portland. You do realise, hopefully, that there are products that are readily available down south that are either scarce or unavailable up here. Have you tried to get a bike fixed in Vancover lately? Aside from somebody working out of his garage on the lower east side, or going all the way out to Hazel Dell, you pretty much have to go south. It's far easier to find somebody to fix your computer here (Grot Squad @ Worst Buy doesn't count, all they do is make problems worse, from my experience) than it is to fix your bike!

But enough of that.

At least here the cops wouldn't just as soon slaughter you than look at you. Oh yeah, we also don't have a STATE INCOME TAX, 30% UNEMPLOYMENT, a PERVERT for mayor, public schools that are CRUMBLING or can't even afford to stay open for even half the calendar year, a SEWER SYSTEM THAT OVERFLOWS WHENEVER THE RIVER GETS TOO HIGH and (oh yeah) no-where near the TRAFFIC or SPRAWL that Portland has. (Unless you manage to hit 205 during c/rush hour, but I'm not getting into that.)

I lived in Portland for almost three years earlier this decade and if I have anything to say about it, will never have to endure such hell again.

Sure makes you proud to live in the city you do, yeah?

Fair enough. There is not a liberal bias in the media.

On economic matters, it's nearly all neo-conservative, "trickle down", "free market" style bias. It's never framed in terms of any real left bias. NEVER.

Go read some good news from the EU, and when you find one that's actually written from the left, it hits you BIG.

We don't have that in our major media. Small portions of the new media have it, but it's not dominant there at all, often blurry.

(and I watch for that a lot, having seen it escalate after Reagan planted the seed when I was a kid)

So, if you mean corporate in that way, agreed totally.

The impact of that is very significant economically. I don't know what I think it's impact is on foreign policy. On social issues, the impact is there, but not so much that the discourse is overly colored by it.

Liberal media bias is made up. There's no such thing. The media reports the facts and the facts generally don't align with the conservative position. Therefore they villify the media as being liberal in an effort to discredit facts.

Make one. If you have a turntable base or one you can remove the tone arm so that you can put the 16" platter on it, you just need the tone arm.
Look for a Gray 108 or one of it's clones and mount on a base, and it should work.
The Gray 108 was the #1 tone arm in its day. I think the real name is Gray Research 108. There was also a 108C. There are articles on converting from monaural to stereo but you don't need that because the disks you are trying to copy from are all monaural.

Years ago, when you could buy a basic turntable for about $25, I made a 16" tone arm by extending a regular one with stiff cardboard and putting a cartridge on the end of it, attaching it to a regular tonearm, and putting some counter balance on it. It enabled me to play some disks that I came across from the old KVAN (910)from the early 50's that had their promos and jingles on it. Interesting. Also got the AirForce programs on 16" disks.

Hey, I was a kid with no money and a need. You innovate.........

"My vote for Governor is someone who will enact a sales tax, and lower my property tax,"

Never happen. Once they get a tax, it is permanent. Always looking for more money, they won't reduce your property tax enough to make a difference.
Get rid of the property tax, then we'll talk about a sales tax.
That will never happen, also.

Interesting you bring that up Mick, because listening to most of the airchecks (that have survived) of the 60's-particularly the 'Boss Jocks'-they were not giving any information, just basically seeing how fast they could talk and get as close to hitting the post as possible. I equate it to diarrhea of the mouth. I would say that creatively, the late 80's and early 90's were the best for Radio talent, you had guys who where masterful with editing down tape for phone calls, dropping elements and running stacks of carted shotguns and drops, while keeping the audience entertained. Jocks of the 60's and 70's would bring a stupid gong and call themselves "emperor" - what a joke. Keeping PUKING with the stars.

Discuss amongst yourself.

Yes.. keep encouraging people to live in Vancouver and mooch of those of us who actually live in Portland. God, I hope they make the new bridge a toll bridge. I wish Couve-ites would work in their own downtown--oh wait, all that is there is people who want to throw acid in your face.

Go Vannncouver, it's your birthday...

My vote for Governor is someone who will enact a sales tax, and lower my property tax, F-U Vancouver.

I predict that this pastor will receive a message "from God" not to go through with the Quran burnings. But not before he has sucked out every bit of publicity he can from this stunt.

With your resume' Rich , you could get yourself a " retirement " Radio gig in either market. Something in studio and 6 hours a day tops, no weekends or Holdidays.

The weather is better in PDX/Vancouver. Property values a bit less overall and a tax advantage , I think , if you live in Washington , Clark County. Also a better bang for you buck over there as far as housing with the opportunity to cross the river to save taxes on big items . Traffic isnt as snarly in PDX either. Earthquakes are not as big an issue in PDX as well. Seattle has a lot of fault lines under the Puget Sound, the Straits and some of them run into the Cascade range up there as well.

However, getting that retirement radio gig in Seattle might be a bit easier than in PDX.

This from a guy who was born in Tacoma, lived there till he was 11, then moved to Vancouver, Wa...then lived in Oregon in several places and now lives in Kennewick, Wa...and was a radio full timer for 2 years and a partimer for 27 years...for what thats worth !!

Andrew says: "For me, the lack of pro sports in Portland is an asset. It's one thing that makes us different from Seattle and so many other US cities."

I am the complete opposite. To me, the sports scene makes a HUGE difference. It's a defining aspect of the city; currently, sadly, in Seattle, that means misery as it has been rated the most miserable sports town in America the last two years.

But it's a galvanizing force, something that brings the people together like nothing else.

Blazer fans who can remember the 1977 title run should remember that. It helped put Portland on the map, and from a sports significance standpoint it absolutely did.

It was a rallying cry for us in Seattle. September and October of 1995 were two of the greatest months of my life, I remember with great fondness the run the Mariners made. Two months that saved baseball in Seattle; the M's had one foot out the door to Tampa.

I remember the city rallying behind the Save Our Seahawks campaign and Paul Allen buying the team and getting Qwest Field up. Ken Behring had already tried to move the franchise to Anaheim.

I remember standing, along with about 10,000 other people, on the tarmac at Boeing Field to welcome back the Sonics after they lost to Chicago in the 1996 NBA Finals. Even in defeat, we were proud and we were there. And now, we stand in unity in hoping Clay Bennett gets run over by a garbage truck.

And that is just a microcosm of Seattle compared to Portland. Seattle seems to have more of a "how can we do it?" mentality and they get it done. Portland is mentally very small-townish, especially for a progressive, liberal city.

I like Portland.

I LOVE Seattle.
