I have the C. Crane CC Radio-SW that I bought last year to replace my venerable Sony ICF-2010 that served me so well for 25 years. Is it as good as the Sony? No, but few radios are. Is it worth the $139 price tag? Absolutely! You get accurate digital tuning and great sound. The only negative is that unlike the ICF-2010, there are not discrete one-touch saved frequency buttons, i.e. instead of having separate one-touch buttons for each freq, you have to push a button multiple times to cycle through your list of saved freqs (but this is the way it is with most radios today, except for the significantly more expensive Sangean ATS-909X).

Excellent story Steve thanks. And My favorite line from the whole article is.

"and at the same time the radio companies are shooting themselves in the foot by cutting back and getting rid of personalities."
So true- Radio needs personalities more than ever today. Dj's that can have some personality on the air and not sound like robots.
I just wanted to say that Portland radio has some AWESOME female air talent that continue to put on great radio. Some of my favorites are Sheryl Stewert, and Daria. Sheryl Stewert always puts a great show on every day. She is informative, her talk breaks are always interesting. I hope sheryl gets to stay at the Buzz for a long time because she is a great talent. Inessa- another favorite of mine-has she turned up anywhere on the dial yet? I figured when she was let go from Kink that someone in the market would pick her up right away. Inessa was a natural on the air and a big loss for kink. Stacey Lynne is another favorite of mine, always puts on great radio.

I hope Yaw's can give it another shot - though, between this attempt and the Mark Lindsey incident, it does seem the gods are not in their favor. Maybe the family should just sell the rights and the recipes to a competent restauranteur and see if someone else can bring the Yaw's magic back.

Can you show me the harm done? Actually Portland is a smart city, and nobody likes the IRS going off the farm like that. Good thing it's being addressed by an administration who believes the IRS needs to be neutral as it should be, and one that thinks Citizens United is a really bad idea.

http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2013-05-16/news/fl-editorial-irs-obama-gs-20130516_1_tax-exempt-status-irs-commissioner-douglas-shulman-tea-party-group

Let's fix it. Full disclosure laws, laws that Republicans blocked.

Yeah, and I know lots of people want to make it about Obama, and about those people who know better than to buy into manufactured garbage, but this will pass and the rational, fact based people will be shown to be on the right side of most issues, and on this one in particular.

Go ahead though. If you want to pretend stuff, it's not a big deal, unless you think it is.

And if you ever get a letter from that agency … its ALWAYS bad news…
Actually, several years ago the Master of Disaster received a thick envelope from them stating 'we increased your refund due to an error on your 1040,' with a several page explanation and several more pages explaining how to contest the decision if I didn't agree. Everything was printed on one side only. We all know paper and ink isn't exactly free; there was a postmark indicating they didn't send it cheaply, either.

Having said that, with all due respect to everyone here Portland must be a city on drugs. If this news item happened under Bush's presidency there'd be protesting in the streets. However it seems the loopy-liberal equivalent to the 23-percenters still seem to think Obama is the best thing to happen since the invention of agnosticism.

Oh, and don't blame me. The Master of Disaster voted third-party in 2008 and 2012, and doesn't regret it one bit.

Obama reminds me of a mob boss. IMO.
Actually, both Republicans and Democrats evoke shades of mobs.

I Agree on the PL-600 and the newer PL-660... In the islands, Shortwave might be worth the additional expense. The baby brother to the 600s is the tiny PL-380, which is a decent performer *and* under $50!

It's a little above the $50 point, but for the capabilities it has, the Tecsun PL-600 is pretty hard to beat. It's performance, particularly on FM, is quite nice.

The construction isn't the best, though, but it also isn't a piece of total junk. Likewise, the speaker in it won't produce a lot of low frequencies. It's reasonable for listening, though, and with an output jack, it's more or less a non-issue.

I am thinking of buying a new portable radio. I would like a digital tuning feature and preset buttons like my auto radio. I want a good performer for both AM and FM but don't need Hi-Fi sound. I am not sure about HD because there are no HD stations now on Maui and I don't think that there will ever be any... but, as a planner, I have learned "never to say never." My price range is around the $50.00 mark or higher if someone can point me to a stellar performer that I can get for not much more money.

Thoughts? Thank you in advance...

Interesting to see KINK consistently sliding down further and further. Alpha Broadcasting's transformation of KINK reminds me of the story of famous model Cindy Crawford who was told by an arrogant prominent agency early on she would never be successful as a model because of her facial mole. In my humble opinion the attempt to put their "own" stamp on this once highly successful station pretty much stripped away all the attributes that made KINK competitive, unique, and popular.

CNN has feature on radio today. One feature includes an interview on the state of radio today with Clear Channel’s CEO Bob Pittman. Pittman is perhaps best known for his rein at MTV and later AOL. The interviewer asks him about big staff layoffs last Thanksgiving and how consolidation retains local flavor. His answer I’m sure is no comfort to those who lost their jobs.

KBOO stopped subscribing over a year ago. Couldn't afford it and argued that Arbitron under reported minority and underpriviledged audiences anyway ... as a way of explaining away the horrible ratings.

And when we get the answers to who, what, where, when, why and how, I am completely open to reconsidering what I think of Obama, but we don't have those things right now, and until we do, I'm not going to reconsider what I think of Obama, who has run the most scandal free administration in what seems like forever. I like Obama, and his intent demonstrated to date is solid. He gives a shit and he's trying to execute the office to make things better and that's great!

Would be nice if we didn't have the stupid party trying to keep the whole nation on hold so that we could see more of what Obama can do for us, but apparently we've enough chumps eating just a little too much red meat for that to be the case at present.

So these events all being escalated to a frothy rage are red meat for the stupid people Deane. They are nearly fact free frothing, nothing more and that's why most of the not stupid people aren't terribly excited over them.

You did ask.

One more thing. I am rarely wrong about my judgement of people. Why? Because I pay fucking attention to the facts surrounding them, not the red meat and that tends to clarify things over time and experience nicely; whereas the red meat tends to blur things and experiences over time leading to highly speculative and dubious conclusions getting more attention than warranted.

See how that works?
