I'm a tad bit late to this thread.

Post on May 2nd.

"1973 KGW's "Open Door" program received the George Foster Peabody Award for 1972, in N. Y. C."

I have a copy of that very award in my studio.

How it's sposed to work should include BOTH kinds of help. Grandstanding political hacks like Glenn Beck tend to get in the way, want special attention, bring the wrong stuff, without knowing how to distribute it. Should we all drive to Oklahoma with teddy bears? National relief makes sense to me.

In addition to some exciting new challenges in my commercial real estate career, I will be hosting a show or two on the weekends. So all good! I'll still be here for you (on a limited basis). It's time to focus more on the "biz" and less on the "show."

When will "progressive" groups be finding their ways to Moore? Glenn Beck drove with several trucks of relief aid through the night last night to Moore and now has raised just under $300k since last night while FEMA is still waiting to get there.

You see THIS is how it's supposed to work. Not government help, people help. It's how it was for generations and it still works.
Though most on this board HATE Beck, why not help out with a donation since he's there now, helping folks NOW and every penny goes to the people of Moore.

Okla senators say screw disaster relief, costs money better spent on corportate welfare: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/20/oklahoma-senators-disaster-relief_n_3309234.html

...Sens. Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn, both Republicans, are fiscal hawks who have repeatedly voted against funding disaster aid for other parts of the country. They also have opposed increased funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which administers federal disaster relief.

Late last year, Inhofe and Coburn both backed a plan to slash disaster relief to victims of Hurricane Sandy. In a December press release, Coburn complained that the Sandy Relief bill contained "wasteful spending," and identified a series of items he objected to, including "$12.9 billion for future disaster mitigation activities and studies."

Coburn spokesman John Hart on Monday evening confirmed that the senator will seek to ensure that any additional funding for tornado disaster relief in Oklahoma be offset by cuts to federal spending elsewhere in the budget.

"When you worked at KOMA, where were the studios? Next to the tower? Does the studio building still exist? I know you have a site that posted studios, are there any pics of this?"

In the 1960's, the studios were in Moore at the tower site. Big concrete structure built to take a lot of punishment. We had a 275 KW diesel generator and 30 days fuel stored underground. It would run the entire building including the 50 KW transmitter. During extremely severe weather, we would switch to the generator so there would be no interruption in case of a power outage.

I visited the site about 5 years ago and a new building had been built at the base of the towers to hold the new 50KW solid state transmitter. The studio building had been remodeled multiple times and expanded over the years, and was completely empty. It was for sale. Renda Broadcasting out of Pittsburgh owned it at that time.

I don't have a photo of the outside at hand, but I sort of remember one somewhere. I certainly wish I had shot much more. Who would have known KOMA's history would be so enduring and of so much interest 50 years later, at least in the middle of the U.S.

60 kW is about 80 horsepower.
85 kW is about 114 horsepower.

60 kW is about the rated output of the engine in my 1992 Hyundai Excel (RIP). 85 kW is about the rated output of the engines in most Mazda Miatas (some high powered models had engines as powerful as 110 kW).

In practice, how does an electric car perform for acceleration compared to an internal combustion car? Does the low end torque of the motor make for quicker acceleration, even though the horsepower rating is smaller? Or, is the low end torque offset by the weight of the batteries? (My apologies for throwing in geeky engineering questions here...)

Indeed, We just lost a great musician! RIP Ray.

In addition to playing Doors music, I had to pull out the Manzarek CD of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana today:

Genius, for sure.

"I will not enter one of their stores."

Me either. I bought a down jacket from them about 20 years ago and haven't been in one of their stores since.

I will not enter one of their stores.

For two reasons:

One, I'm 54 and they don't want me, despite being in shape.

Two, I don't have six-pack abs like the models at the entrance.

Good luck with this business model.

Mark, yeah, we have something in common, both working in OKC. And both wanting to get out of there ASAP! (Am I right?)

That being said, OKC people are great. They love their trucks, they love their football, and they love helping their neighbors.

I lived in Moore when I programmed KEBC from 1989 to 1991... My old house was south of the 1999 tornado and about a mile north of this one. Too close for comfort, even from Arizona! Fortunately, my wonderful neighbors in Moore along with their kids (and grandkids) are all safe.

On the TV coverage, I saw the three 1520 towers winking away in the nighttime background... I could see those from my house.

Deane is absolutely right... The people of Oklahoma will show the country how to help friends and strangers alike when it comes to a disaster like this... We can all learn a lesson from their example.

Meanwhile, prayers for the victims and the rescuers alike will be most appreciated...

I am always happy to be living here were we don't see that kind of thing. My last trip to the Midwest was interesting! I got caught up in the flooding and it was intense.

Today, I saw a picture linked on Reddit where somebody took a photo of friends at a school event and that big storm was in the background. Scary stuff, and it's almost as if they didn't even care.

Piers Morgan just announced a figure of 90+ dead.

This could be bigger than Joplin, making it the most destructive one tornado in our recorded tornado history.

Interestingly, there have been two other major tornadoes that hit Moore in the past 14 years. Coincidence, or some sort of meteorologic effect?

Vit, nature is not political, but I get your point.

Deane, thanks for the history. I can imagine KOMA's towers being built in Moore when there was little population there. The fact that a subdivision and a school, (now notorious), is named after the towers is now a part of radio history. Fascinating.

When you worked at KOMA, where were the studios? Next to the tower? Does the studio building still exist? I know you have a site that posted studios, are there any pics of this?
