That's great, Chris. It feels good when our kids show initiative, and pick up on that work ethic and drive.

In a couple weeks, my stepdaughter graduates from high school. When she was turning 16, I got her an interview with us, to work at Baskin-Robbins. All I did was get her foot in the door for the interview; I told her that NOTHING was being handed to her. She had to earn it, like everyone else. She interviewed very well while I was in the hospital post-appendectomy, and has been an outstanding performer since her first day.

She now works for me, as I am managing that concept for us. She is my second-in-command over there, and does a fantastic job. I couldn't be prouder of her, as her boss and as her dad.

Well done Chris. It's no wonder you have such an amazing relationship with your children.

It has been reported that the Stonehenge master antenna is being replaced this summer, by a similar model, with more capacity. This should be enough to handle 97.9, 96.3, some HDs and who knows what else. KNRQ's programming is slated to move to 103.7, to continue covering Eugene but before that can happen, the station must move from the valley into Eugene. It isn't a technical concern(up here)but one of programming and ownership. They really need an LMA with 103.7 before turning off 97.9(in Eugene)because otherwise, they'll be over the ownership limit in Eugene. I haven't heard any plans regarding that move.

I always brought filtered water in big 5-gallon watercooler bottles down to the flat in Portland from Grandma's place in Hockinson, filled at her house, sometimes a dozen at a time. I figured I was already taking my chances bathing and washing my hands in the tap down there; I'd have been damned if I'd have had to drink it. And yes, this was with a house filter on the main coming into the apartment.

And it's a good thing the building had a lift, because I'd have also been damned if I was going to haul 10 or 12 30+-pound bottles of water up seven floors' worth of stairs with my back the way it is....

My bottom line has always been, if it ain't broke...

Much debate about Portland's water. I drink it from the tap. I live in an older home with galvanized pipes. We've had our water tested. We are fine.

Everyone's teeth are good. I have only a couple of cavities. One from childhood, and one from a bad habit I had as a mobile DJ, putting a breath mint between my cheek and gum. Stopped that habit by first, not buying breath mints with processed sugar.

Neither of our kids have cavities. Both had braces and handled that with good hygiene.

But to each their own. Just glad the measure was defeated.

<hijack> "
Portland essentially drinks snowmelt from the Bull Run reservoir, which is about as pure H2O as one is going to find in nature.
*snip*
It's excellent water, probably the best of any metropolitan system anywhere, but it's not quite as healthful as it could be.
"

Until somebody takes a piss in the local branch reservoir or a flock of geese is overhead.

How many "boil-water" warnings has Portland had within the past 20 years? And how many has, say, Vancouver had? Fluoridated or not, the people who boast and brag about how "wonderful" they think Portland's hopelessly archaic open-pit water system is (*coughcoughcough*OPB*coughcough*) easily forget how much more vulnerable to compromise and contamination such a system is than a closed system. Fact. When you're drunk (or stoned) and need to answer nature's call, a municipal reservoir and a portaloo are probably going to look one and the same.

Although I've a hunch we've been down this road before on here. Consider it déjà vu. </hijack>

Chris, you earlier said that Portland's water was naturally fluoridated the same as the water that Andrew described drinking when he was younger. But, Portland's water is not well water, passing through numerous underground (and mineral-rich) aquifers. Portland essentially drinks snowmelt from the Bull Run reservoir, which is about as pure H2O as one is going to find in nature. Any purer, and you might as well drink distilled water.

I also grew up on well water (in Gresham), and that (along with flouride supplement pills when I was very young) gave me titanium teeth, and to this day I have excellent dental health and no cavities.

It's a mistake to assume that your fluoride needs are met by Portland drinking water. It's excellent water, probably the best of any metropolitan system anywhere, but it's not quite as healthful as it could be.

I grew up in Canada where there is no voting on public health issues... I lived with and benefitted from fluoride in the public water supply -- if it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't have much of any teeth left the way that I abused them as a child... (e.g., they worked better than the pliers for stripping plastic insulation off that thin gauge copper wire I used on my model railroad)...

Jacob - welcome and thank you for sharing. I have found great solace in my faith during very troubling times. I also respect those who have made their own peace with the challenges of being human in ways other than faith and those whose faith has led them to a different relationship with God. I also respect those who do not believe because if we were a totally mono-religious culture I don't think I would value my faith as highly as I do.

I tend not to quote from the Bible the same way as I don't expect others to quote from the Koran or other text that they treat as sacred, holy or the foundational work of their faith. I believe that how I act and how I treat others is the best reflection of my faith. I also believe that others who do not believe in God or don't have the same faith as I can behave just as "moral" as others who do. In fact, if they don't believe and still act morally right (not just saying it but living it), I have greater respect for them because they have gotten to where I believe God wants us all to be without the "crutch" of faith.

This is a challenging group with strong opinions that when expressed in the anonymity this forum provides tests one's moral underpinnings. So I try to remember that when a nerve is touched...

May you find yourself always looking to your own "internal compass" to guide you during the tests that this world and this forum constantly provides... I hope you find it as enjoyable as I have...

Thanks again. Here's a little update.

Our son has landed his first official job at a local computer repair shop that is a start up in our neighborhood. For the past 5-6 weeks he's been volunteering on late Monday afternoons for 1-2 hours. This past Monday, while walking home from his volunteering, he called me to let me know the young boss (read mentor), offered him a part-time summer job. My son was jacked.

Ironically, my son and I had a somewhat intense conversation the night before concerning seeking employment. I had reminded him that it was me that found him this volunteer opportunity. I had also found a few other jobs too and brought home some applications. But he needed to show some initiative and fill out the apps and return them. That wasn't happening. Our discussion de-intensified and we left things on good terms.

I told my son how proud I was of him and he noted, "but dad, you're the one who got me the job!" Which I thanked him for and in return said, "but you're the one who hit the ball out of the park." There were high fives upon his arrival home.

Very profound, and I totally agree. I will never argue with anyone about religion, becuase it is a personal decision. It becomes impersonal when those impose thier beliefs on others who are not willing to listen. By that I mean, those who choose to spread the word should not be condemned, but (in my words), don't push it if there is no hope.

Speaking of Southern Oregon, we've brought Hot AC back to the market on KLDR.

There we go, another stinking pile of God poop dumped in Dan's forum. For some of us, we can walk away from the smell, but for those who find value in God, you're pretty much stuck with the stench a fellow Christian brought here.

Yeah, but RD is worse.

WMC's right. It's old news. The split happened nearly a year ago as a result of the "Talkers" buyout. RI and RD are now two seperate ¢ompanies (yet probably still just as clueless and unethical) that have nothing to do with each other these days. The "boards.radio-info.com" URL given on the Talkers-era R-I site was probably a pre-breakup leftover because whomever was in charge of editing the HTML was probably too lazy to get around to editing it out (or didn't get the memo regarding the divestiture.)

Just for the record, the Radiodiscussions cesspit can still be accessed (but really, why would you want to?) via http://boards.radio-info.com/. And I can still access the miliwatt test via 696-1000 on my rotary fone.

True, but "radio discussions" was still able to be accessed on the radio-info site up till about 24 hours ago. That was my main informational point.

Radio Info and Radio Discussions are two completely different sites and companies as of several months ago when in3media sold off Radio-Info.com. These boards are now Radio Discussions. Radio Info is part of something else and not related to this site.

They have spun this off, and I don't think Dan will mind if I direct those four or five of us on both to: radiodiscussions.com

I don't think radio-info cared much about this side of their site, although on a national scale is still relatively important.
