Does anyone here realize what could happen if they were to tangle with such a powerful, politicized agency? People can serve time, lose their life savings and/or livelihood, or simply be wrongfully smeared.

This absolutely should not be a partisan issue. As I said, Mr. Nixon was wrong to politicize this agency, as is the current administration.

If politics should never be an issue, it is here. Anything else is just asking for problems. Special prosecutor, anyone?

'In my experience, a legal counsel never would believe that there was information that was appropriate for the chief of staff to know but that was inappropriate for the president to know. Out of all the news that has emerged regarding the Obama IRS scandal, this is the most curious whopper I’ve heard so far. I can’t wait to.'

I live in Washington County so Ive been getting fluoride in my water. I'm glad it didn't pass for Multnomah County because I don't think the water needs to be messed with. Even with my water having fluoride in it, I still get cavities. Hmmm .....The snickers bar and Can of coke I have for breakfast every morning probably isn't helping much

"Ignorance won this vote, that's for sure."

For all the bitching and griping you throw at the faith community for being judgmental, you are often guilty of it, too.

I voted "no" on the measure. It was based on asking questions, reading all kinds of literature and then formulating a conclusion. Hardly ignorant.

Your conclusion, based on different information or maybe some of the same, was YOUR informed decision.

I felt confident that Portlander's would defeat this soundly. Which they have done in the past.

Now, can we use some of the money that was wasted on this campaign and begin to educate kids, and their parents, about poor eating habits that can lead to tooth decay.

In other excellent news, Martin Gonzalez was defeated. (By a big-budget opponent, but hey better than nothing.)

And, for a change, we had an election that didn't revolve around abortion, guns, gay marriage, or climate change/global warming. Rather refreshing.

In modern times, soft drinks, sweet snacks, and the prevalence of high fructose corn syrup have not been kind to teeth.
The Master of Disaster agrees, and the State of Washington tried to do the right thing by taxing them in addition to the sales taxes they already put on said items. We all know how well that went over.

I didn't have a dog in the fluoride fight, since my ballot did not contain this particular measure. I think that I can comment a little bit on the science, though.

I vividly recall a college lecture on the element fluorine (because the professor was very animated). He explained that tooth enamel is made up of crystals of hydroxylapatite [ Ca5(PO4)3(OH) ]. Acids in the mouth contain H+ ions that easily pull the OH group from the hydroxylapatite crystal, resulting in decay. Flouride compounds cause the OH group in the hydroxylapatite crystal to be replaced with fluorine. The resulting crystal is much more resistant to acid attacks because the fluorine atom is tightly bound and thus very hard to remove.

In modern times, soft drinks, sweet snacks, and the prevalence of high fructose corn syrup have not been kind to teeth. Nonetheless, people in ancient times suffered cavities from eating naturally sweet foods, such as figs. One thing that is really fortunate about today is that tooth loss from gum disease isn't as prevalent as it used to be.

Those are two different things and given the overall climate out there right now, risks run considerably higher than people are going to think about.

Mix in the ugly law and position the IRS is in and the overall distaste for the IRS and yeah, risks are there, present and likely compelling.

Why is Bloomberg a "bad guy"?

Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born February 14, 1942) is an American business magnate, politician and philanthropist. He is the 108th and current Mayor of New York City, having served three consecutive terms since his first election in 2002. With a net worth of $27 billion, he is also the 7th-richest person in the United States.[1] He is the founder and 88% owner of Bloomberg L.P., the global financial data and media company most famous for its Bloomberg Terminal.[2][3]

Bloomberg began his career at the securities brokerage Salomon Brothers before forming his company in 1981 and spending the next twenty years as its Chairman and CEO.[4] He also served as chairman of the board of trustees at his alma mater Johns Hopkins University from 1996 to 2002.[1] A Democrat before seeking elective office, Bloomberg switched his party registration in 2001 to run for mayor as a Republican. He defeated opponent Mark Green in a close election held just weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Bloomberg won a second term in 2005 and left the Republican Party two years later.[4] He campaigned to change the city's term limits law in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and was elected to his third term in 2009 as an independent candidate on the Republican ballot line.

He was frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for the U.S. presidential elections in 2008 and 2012,[5] and for New York Governor in 2010. He declined to seek either office, instead opting to continue serving as Mayor of New York.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Bloomberg

I don't see anything that makes him a bad guy.

Okie Dokie

This thread is a GREAT example of why somebody would choose to take the 5th. I sure as hell would, and I'll bet all you guys would too.

Chris, I can't help but smile at your experiences with teenagers ("our discussion de-intensified..."). Ah, the joys of parenting. Good luck, and great suggestions from everyone on this topic.

The similarities to the Nixon White House are stunning. And from the Chicago Tribune, ground zero for corruption, for Pete's sake:

'James Goodale has a position of privilege from which to render judgments in re: Obama v. Nixon on the question of respect for press freedoms. He represented the New York Times in the Pentagon Papers case and wrote a book about it.'

'The search warrant filed to investigate the Fox News reporter James Rosen proved as many had suspected: President Obama wants to make it a crime for a reporter to talk to a leaker. It is a further example of how President Obama will surely pass President Richard Nixon as the worst president ever on issues of national security and press freedom.'

Bloomberg is a good man. I'd consider voting for him if he ran for president.

As for Weiner, it depends on who he runs agaisnt. Frankly, I hope he wins. I like his politics, and that's what matters.

The big deal is that they leaked the confidential information that they found to ProPublica.

That would be a violation of the law, not an attack at Obama.
