Hey, Craig:

Forgot to ask on this the other day...

MARCH 7TH. TODAY IN PORTLAND RADIO HISTORY
1986 KSKD C.H.R. "Cascade 105" became KXYQ, standing for "Q105 Means Music."

Is that the official "FCC" change date. I thought we didn't go live with the calls until a few weeks later. I don't mind if I'm wrong, it's not the first time I've been forgetting past dates.

FYI, the day we cranked live, Jim Ryan was up to bat first, then I followed, and OH MAN did Ron Samuels get us a spread. Salmon, oysters, beef and more, plus plenty of champagne. Ryan was BUZZED the day we went live! I wasn't so bad by the time I started my shift.

I just finished reading The New Right: We're Ready To Lead by Richard Viguerie. This book has been out of print for many years, but if you can get your hands on a copy, I recommend it; it is a good, quick read. The copy I read was borrowed.

Richard Viguerie made himself famous in political circles by building a very successful political direct mail company. If you have given to political candidates or causes, you may have received direct mail advertising yourself: these are letters that try persuade you to vote a certain way on ballot measures, to volunteer, or to donate. The book is written much as if it were a long-form direct mail letter. There are numerous calls to action (including a petition in the back of the book to declare a National Day of Prayer and Fasting), there is copious name-dropping of politicians and PAC leaders who fit the "New Right" philosophy, and the writing style has a certain conversational cadence and rhythm to it. To explain that last point, I started to notice in some places that a paragraph may outline some problematic situation and the following paragraph opens, "So, we organized an effort to...." Or, a question might appear (i.e. "How badly off are we?") and then some bullet points might appear immediately following. One has to take some parts of the book with a grain of salt as it is, after all, a marketing document for "The New Right" and for Viguerie's direct-mail advertising company.

Viguerie starts off by telling the interesting (at least to me) story of how he entered the direct-mail advertising business. In the early 1960s, just out of college, he became involved with Young Americans for Freedom, which at the time was in a funding crisis. He started doing fundraising, first by approaching potential major donors in person; however, he found that it was much more comfortable for him to write letters soliciting donations. He realized the power of fundraising letters and hit upon the idea that he could make a living being a professional fundraiser--and so the Viguerie Co. was born. The mailing list is the "secret sauce" of any highly effective direct-mail campaign. Viguerie built his first list of some 12,500 addresses by hand-copying publicly available records of donors to the Barry Goldwater campaign (the law forbade photo-copying of the records, so he hired a few people from a temp agency to help him in this laborious task). Years later, Viguerie would become the first direct-mail company to use computers to manage its mailing lists.

What I found most interesting about this book is that it is like a "snapshot" view of what was going on in the world of neo-conservative politics in early 1980, prior to Ronald Reagan becoming the Republican candidate for the Presidency. Reading this almost made me feel like a "fly on the wall" regarding the recruiting tactics that were used then to get a bloc composed mostly Fundamentalist Protestants to vote and to become active in politics (which was something they had largely avoided on principle up to that point). The issues that the book points repeatedly out in its persuasive arguments also show how the "New Right" architects successfully made the tent big enough to give the resulting group enough traction to meet its objectives.

What were the main ingredients of the New Right's success? According to Viguerie, they were: single-issue political groups, multi-issue conservative groups, coalition politics, and direct-mail. (There's that self promotion again!) On a few occasions, Viguerie used the term "neo-conservative" in his book; Viguerie's definition of the New Right philosophy is taken from Frank Meyer's What Is Conservatism? This world view, says Viguerie, adheres to six basic tenets:

a moral order based on God

the individual as the center of social and political action

limited government

a free (as contrasted to a planned) society

the US Constitution as originally conceived by the Founding Fathers

the recognition of Communism as an unchanging enemy of the free world

The New Right, according to Viguerie, is made up of coalitions of citizens fed up with high taxes, small business people frustrated with excessive federal regulations and red tape, born-again Christians disturbed about sex, violence, and profanity in television and movies, parents opposed to court-mandated school busing, opponents of the federal financing of abortions, middle class Americans fed up with Big Government/Big Business/Big Labor/Big Education telling them what to do, and pro-defense people upset by appeasement and weakness in US foreign policy. Viguerie provides arguments to rally all of these groups, except for the anti-busing folks. There are even five chapters that specifically target people worried about inadequate defense spending, politically active born-again Christians, people angry at federal taxes, people worried about a variety of moral ("family") issues, and people upset about various workplace issues (OSHA regulations being too stringent, unions getting involved in politics, etc.) Using numerical data as well as (in my opinion sometimes hokey) boilerplate arguments, Viguerie implores his readers to get involved with the New Right, reassuring them that they will be on a winning team because the New Right is hard-working and aggressive, while the left has lost its great leaders and gone soft.

He's got my vote. This from All Access:

---------------------------------------------Noory For President In '12?---------------------------------------------

President GEORGE NOORY? WORLD NET DAILY is speculating that PREMIERE's "COAST TO COAST AM" host NOORY might run for President in 2012, and NOORY tells the site that he would demonstrate his eligibility as a "natural born citizen" by producing his birth certificate (NOORY was born in DETROIT in 1950), a reference to the controversy over President OBAMA's birth certificate.

NOORY repeated a previous promise that if he were to be drafted for a run for President, he would respond, saying, "I have never run for political office," he said, "but every night I am reaching out to millions of Americans on the radio and I am deeply concerned that the middle class of the UNITED STATES is being sold out to multi-national corporations with a globalist agenda. I have historically remained non-partisan, but as long as the U.S. remains a two-party system, it's increasingly hard to tell the difference between Republicans and Democrats. People are looking for someone in government to tell them the truth -- we need that now more than ever."

The school district is flat out wrong. If they had the balls, what they should have done was keep the prom on and ban her. The ultimate goal was to keep two lesbians from attending the prom. Why punish all the other students? Just come forward and tell everyone what you really think, and that is that the school district thinks gays are less than human.

They dont want the liability, period. And they dont have to take it. And if they get successfully sued by SOMEONE, the public-taxpayers ultimately pay the price for the award/judgement. When the ACLU got involved in this , the Prom was all over with. It is all about liability now.

What CAN'T this guy do?? This from All Access:

------------------------------Alpha's Larry Wilson Writes Song With Steve Azar------------------------------

ALPHA BROADCASTING Chairman/CEO LARRY WILSON has written a new song with RIDE RECORDS artist STEVE AZAR, called “I Thought I Missed You, But I Didn’t.”

WILSON and AZAR hung out last week during AZAR’s visit to Country KUPL/PORTLAND, and the two began collaborating on some song lyrics over lunch. AZAR returned to NASHVILLE aboard the ALPHA company jet, went into the studio and recorded the song.

While AZAR sings most of it, a portion of the song is spoken by WILSON, describing some of his “less than successful” dating experiences. WILSON is personally working the phones to help promote the song at Country radio stations from coast to coast.

WILSON said: “I’ve written a bunch of songs over the years. But none of them has ever been recorded or released. When I heard the finished product I was blown away. Of course, every great Country song starts out with amazing lyrics, but AZAR is a talented guy and he really knocked this one out of the park."

Anyone else here think the school district did this as a way to make a point about being gay? They cancel the whole prom, so everybody suffers. A majority of the student body then blames the gay chick for ruining it for everyone. This reeks of a lesson learned...

And because this school district IS in Mississippi, that very fact is likely WHY they canceled the Prom. Too many ' Good Ole Boys" still in Old Miss'... and too many mentalities still attracted to the " white robes and torches" !!

The District didnt want to have some real life version of the movie " Carrie "....

Chris - we also happen to live in a state and a region that is much more tolerant of the GLBT community, and of minorities in general. This is Mississippi, where a lot of the establishment is still fighting the Civil War in their minds, sadly.

At my daughters high school they have a club for gays and lesbian and transexual students, so its just part of the school community. When the daily email comes out they often have programs like all the other clubs do.

We've lived in this community nearly 22 years and not once have we heard any problems at the high school dealing with this kind of issue. If there have been any incidents they were taken care of properly.

I don't think deodorant has to stink to high heaven to be effective. I use an unscented kind. It seems to me that if somebody can smell your presence from a few feet, it's too much.

Some background on the ad. It appeared in the May 7, 1956 issue of "TV Radio Prevue" magazine. Willie Nelson had been with KVAN less than a month. "Cactus Ken" was Ken DeBord & "Shorty, the Hired Hand" was Shorty Hecox. The entire K-Van Country crew moved to KKEY in 1958 when KVAN switched to Rock & Roll. Ken DeBord became "Key Radio" Program Director.

"U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., said a bill he's introduced in Congress would protect students such as McMillen. Polis said the measure would make it illegal to discriminate against gay and lesbian school students. He said his bill is modeled after similar laws in at least 10 states.

"This situation with the prom is a perfect example of why we need to protect students from discrimination. In this case it's a prom. It other cases, it's getting beaten up or killed," Polis said."

Well, that's a start. Wow, the whole thing has been cancelled because of what should be a no-brainer request. And it doesn't sound like anyone in the town is willing to pony up and host the prom.

I didn't say every school official is dumb, only lots of them. We'll assume you're not one of those. Your posts would indicate you're one of the OK ones.

The better way to handle the lesbian thing would have been to do nothing. Let her come dressed the way she wants. If her peers don't like it, they'll shun her, if they don't care one way or another, it would go just fine. She's got a life time of coping ahead, let it begin at the prom. Because they made a big deal out of it, it's screwed up for everybody involved.
